Sunday, June 9, 2013 29TH ANNUAL POPS PARTY CONCERT The beautiful back lawn of the Governor's Mansion is the site of the Carson City Symphony's twenty-ninth annual Pops Party concert on Sunday, June 9, at 3:00 p.m. The program, "At the Movies," features the Carson City Symphony, Carson City Symphony Chorus, symphony Youth Strings, and guest singer Jakki Ford. Grounds open and pre-concert entertainment by the Symphony Flutes begins at 2:00 p.m. The Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will play familiar and less known themes from Grease!, Porgy and Bess, and other movies. The Symphony will be joined by 38 strings students for a medley from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Jakki Ford will sing "Lady is a Tramp" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" with the Symphony. The Symphony Chorus, conducted by Michael Langham, will sing "One Day More" from Les Miserables, "The Pink Panther," and "Somewhere" from West Side Story. The concert is supported with public funding through the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts; Partnership Carson City; and the Nevada Commission on Tourism. Admission is free. Seating is on the lawn; the audience is welcome to bring blankets or lawn chairs (some chairs will be provided) and food. Snacks and beverages will be on sale before and during the concert. Proceeds from raffle, food, and beverage sales benefit the Carson City Symphony Association's artistic and educational programs. Join the Symphony's STRINGS IN THE SUMMER 2013 A 6-WEEK PROGRAM FOR STRING PLAYERS OF ALL AGES Each class features at least one new tune. Come learn them all! Classes meet at 1329 S. Carson Street (behind Carl's Jr.) in the Carson Mall beginning June 10. Monday and Wednesday fiddle classes for violin and viola meet 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. Thursday string ensemble for violin, viola, cello, and bass meets 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. Participants perform a free public concert on Tuesday, July 23, 10 a.m. at Sierra Place, 1111 W. College Parkway. Tuition is free, donations welcome. All are welcome - priority will be given to current Strings in the Schools students; Carson Middle, Eagle Valley Middle, and Carson High School orchestra students; and Symphony Association members. Symphony musicians, Chamber Singers, Association members, and friends are invited to attend. We will elect members to the nine-member Board of Trustees, acknowledge volunteers, and have fun! Main dish and beverages will be provided. Please bring a side dish, salad, or dessert to share. CARSON CHAMBER SINGERS ACCOMPANIST, NANCY MIELKE, RETIRES After 27 years as piano and organ accompanist and alto in Carson Chamber Singers, Nancy Mielke retired this year. A retired K-12 Music Specialist in Carson City schools, she also presented music workshops, adjudicated zone choirs and pianists, and was guest conductor for the Reno Pops Orchestra's Messiah Singalong, NZNMEA middle school honor choirs, Area XII American Guild of English Handbell Ringers' Spring Ring, and lighting of the Nevada Capitol Christmas Tree. In 2007 she was honored with a standing ovation from the Nevada State Assembly for her many years' work as a public school arts educator. Ms. Mielke said "Thank you for all of the wonderful experiences I had with Chamber Singers. I'll look forward to hearing their performances in the future." JEREMY KEPPELMANN HARP RECITAL - JUNE 14 AT THE BAC Remember Jeremy? He soloed with the Carson City Symphony in 2006 at age 13, and with the Reno Philharmonic the following year. Now in the harp program at Indiana University, Jeremy has been winning awards in international competitions since 2005. He'll be playing at the Brewery Arts Center in the Ballroom on Friday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m., sponsored by the Symphony Association and the BAC. If you've heard him before, you know you are in for a musical treat. If you haven't heard him yet, don't miss this chance! Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 age 12 and under.
