From the President
By Jim Frakes
August weather was some of the weirdest ever with fall like cool nights and mostly warm
days. The weather is just the type we like for driving Healeys. I hope you have had the
chance. In my case, just too busy trying to get two BJ8’s back on the road and other
personal commitments. My Grandson Nolan and I took a week and toured the Blue Ridge
Mountain area with my son Doug, using beautiful Banner Elk as home base. A very
interesting and enjoyable trip with lots of miles on back roads with scenery whizzing by at
Doug’s favorite speeds.
Since that trip included the Saturday of the Central Indiana British Car Union Show in
Zionsville. I hope someone else has a list of Healey club winners.
Sue and I did attend the very packed Carmel Artomobilia day in down town Carmel. Only
two Big Healeys were on display, Roy Bowman’s always nice red over black BJ8 and
Dewey Poskins also very nice red Healey. They both drew much attention as there many
cars, some exotic, but not many more so than the Healey’s. Steve and Kathy Halleck’s very
beautiful Bugeye also caught a lot of people’s eye. Of special note was an Arnolt-Bristol, a
very rare car indeed.

August 19th, Ron Francis showed his 100 M at a Noblesville Hot Rod show and came out
with Best of Show and a huge trophy.
Picture is Melanie’s surprise look at Ron’s Huge Trophy.
Friday of Labor Day weekend is Bob Haskell and my annual trip to the Auction in Auburn.
It seems to be getting smaller each year, but still a good fun trip. Jerry Butler and my
friend George Wargny joined Bob and I on the one day trip. Tim Mahnensmith from
NIAHCA was there as well as Gary Feldman, National President of the AHCA. Two Big

Healeys were up for sale, a near gold colored BT7 that was excellently restored and
showed well enough to hit near the $50, 000, a very good price for the car. It even had
mirrors showing the underside of the car in the display tent. The other Healey, a red over
black BN7, was much less attractive, but still brought a much higher price of $25,000 (with
buyers premium) than I guessed. (about ½ the selling price).
Progress has been made on my two broken BJ8’s this past week. Bob Haskell, Ron Francis
and Jerry Butler did the lion’s share of work in installing the transmission in the Black
over red Healey on Saturday the 2nd. On Tuesday the 5th, Jerry and I completed the slave
cylinder bleed task and a successful test drive proved it was working ok.
Next week is September Roundup week in NE Ohio at the Mohican State Park Lodge. Sue
and I are leaving on Tuesday to meet up with Bernie and Leslie Lamp of BGAHC for two
days of sightseeing in the Amish country near the Mohican Lodge.
We hope to see many of you attending this event. Have good drive and stay safe and dry.

Miscellaneous Meanderings
By Steve Halleck
August gave us good weather every weekend allowing events to run without umbrellas and tops on the cars.
August 5th was the British Car Show in Dayton’s Harshman Park. This was a big event with over 280 cars.
There were 15 big Healeys, 5 Bugeyes, and one square body Sprite. The collection included the largest MG T
series that I’ve ever seen. In the British Conversions class, near a V8 Healey was an MGA which looked
completely stock on the outside but held a racing Ford drivetrain.
…..
August 12 was the IBCU British Motor Days in Zionsville. There was a good turnout of cars from the club.
The club also was well represented at the awards. Ron Francis took honors for the Big Healey class with David
Verrill and Craig Rice getting excellence in class. The Sprite class was won by (now new members) Mike and
Debbie Pittman in their red Bugeye with Jim Bush taking excellence in Class.
Page | 10
In the Masters class (last year’s class winners), Roy Bowman took top honors. I was surprised to get an
excellence in class. I only made it to the Masters class due to the rain and having the only Sprite to show up last
year.

The Aug 26th Artomobilia was a great event. It’s always an amazing show with all types of cars ranging in
value from a few thousand to millions of dollars-and about 15 thousand spectators! As Jim mentioned, there
were only three club members cars there this year. I felt out of place parked next to a gorgeous DeTomaso
Pantera and the nearby Arnolt-Bristol Roadster.
The comments from the people looking at the Sprite fell into two basic categories – ‘What is that? It’s so
tiny/cute’ and ‘I/my friend had one of those when I was a kid.’ The second would be followed by stories of
what they did in their Sprites. It’s always interesting to hear those stories.
Jim, (new member) Mike gained trophies for
their Sprites. I didn’t catch the name of the
fellow with the beard who had the square
body Sprite.
Roy left early and didn’t know he’d taken
the Masters class. The Gentleman on the
left is the original owner of a very nice
Morris Minor.
