ALTERNATIVE FUEL # 1 HYDROGEN AND • These new cars will run on hydrogen. It works in two ways: one way requires a

reaction with oxygen in a fuel cell to run the electric motor and the other burns hydrogen in an internal combustion engine creating the byproduct, water vapor

• Advantage: These cars will produce no dangerous CO2 emissions and there will be barley weight added to the car with a hydrogen fuel tank

• Disadvantage/What can the government do: Hydrogen fueling stations must be ubiquitous for this to be around , therefore the government can provide positive incentives to those gas companies who build these stations ( such as tax cuts )

• Other Disadvantages: May not operate as efficiently in freezing conditions ( below 32 degrees Fahrenheit)

BIODIESEL CARS

• These cars work by reacting lipids such as vegetable oil with alcohol creating the biodiesel which is then poured into the diesel engine of the car

• Advantage: Biodiesels can be made from various cheap products such as vegetable oil, soy bean oil, animal fats , and even algae (if feed sewage)

• Biodiesel converters must be prevalent in order for this technology to truly be a success

• Disadvantage: On average biodiesels have a 10% higher nitrogen oxide emissions which can contribute to Smog

• The government may have to fund companies that are willing to make a biodiesel reservoir

COMPRESSED AIR CARS

• Air is compressed in high pressure tubes using electricity and makes use of the air expansion afterwards (which will later move the wheels)

• Advantage: The later expansion of the air lowers its temperature which may be used for air conditioning & the car will be more agile/lighter

• Air compressors must be present in many homes or stations for this technology to be considered a success

• Disadvantage: The cars that run on this may have limited storing capacity distancing only 7 km before refill

• The government may have to fund the research and development areas of many companies more so that storing capacity may increase

PURE ELECTRIC CARS

• An electric car moves by the force created by an electric motor ( a device that creates mechanical energy by utilizing magnetism and electrical currents) which gets its energy from an internal battery ( usually lithium-ion)

• Advantage: No harmful gas emissions

• More charging stations need to be created for an increase of electric vehicle drivers. Some researchers have proposed charging while driving technology that allows users to charge their vehicles while driving on certain paid lanes

• Disadvantage: Although the battery life has increased in longevity, battery life may tend to vary. Replacing batteries may also be expensive

• The government may have to provide a positive incentives for those who create stations for electric vehicles such as tax cuts for new creators

MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE

• I would like to be driving a Tesla ( most likely a model s ) when I get older primarily because their electric cars have very long battery lives, free charging stations ( for tesla users in select locations), and their build quality parallels many high-end cars of today.
