President’s Message

Welcome to the 34th Annual CARS+ Convention! This is the “jewel in the crown” of CARS+. It’s what we’ve always done best…presenting the latest and most accurate in-formation and teaching techniques to you. It’s also your chance to get away from your routine and feel a little bit pampered, hopefully.

What do you need out of this convention?

Some people say, “I need something I can take back to my classroom on Monday morning and make use of immedi-ately.” We have some of that here. Behavior Interventions, teaching methods and tricks, new ideas on how to reach

students who fall a little bit outside of even our extremely large box. There is some good stuff here.

Some people say, “But what does it all mean?” We have some of that here, too. Where does Special Education fit in the big picture? What is the future going to look like? How do we adapt ourselves to a changing world without abandoning the first principles of individual instruction? What about robots?

Some people say, “I need materials and resources. I can’t make it all up myself.” We have that. Exhibitors, vendors, and presenters of curriculum, assessment tools, transition procedures, and websites to make your life a little easier.

And some people say, “I feel like the Lone Ranger.” Perhaps the best of what we offer is the opportunity to establish relationships with other Special Educators from around the state, teach-ers who, like you, feel hung out in the little building on the edge of the campus with no one who understands what Special Education is all about.

So while you’re here in Sacramento, take advantage of the knowledge. Pick your sessions care-fully. Visit the vendors. And in the halls, at the lunches, and after hours, sit down with like-mind-ed people and pick their brains. Tell student stories. Laugh a little, cry a little, and go back home feeling like there is someone else in the world who feels just like you feel. And who is as close as an email when you have problems or questions.

This is your organization, and the only way to take advantage of what CARS+ has to offer is to fully participate and share with one another. You could take away a life-saving idea from some-one. Or you could, on the other hand, save someone else’s life. Have a great time!

Session IFriday, 8:30 am – 10:00 am

Dr. Fred Balcom: Current Issues in Special Education

Where are we? Dr. Balcom, Director of Special Education for the state of California, will present an overview of the “big issues,” not only for our state, but from his perspective as President of the national association of Special Education directors.

Erica Winn, M.B.A./B.C.B.A.: Behavior Assessment & Intervention Plans (BIPs)

Effectively managing student behavior is the first step necessary in helping them learn and reach their highest potential. Attendees will learn what elements to consider when a student engages in maladaptive behavior, the steps to take in completing a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA), and leave with resources to use immediately.

Erica Winn is a Program Specialist for EGSUD and Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). She has experience in a variety of roles within the educational realm, which include teaching in a self-contained classroom, being an Inclusive Educator, and Lead Behaviorist for the district prior to becoming an administrator. Erica Winn has also been involved in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis for over 17 years in the private sector through her work as a Behavior Consultant. In addition to being a Program Specialist currently, Erica Winn is the owner of Positive Regard, LLC, a Non-Public Agency providing Behavior Consultation services.

Patty Schetter and Kandis Lighthall: Evidence-Based Practices for Developing Social Skills on the ASD

Social skills are an often overlooked aspect of classroom education, yet are the basis for life interactions, employability, and just “getting along” with others. Use proven research-based techniques to target social skills acquisition with your students on the Autism Spectrum.

Tana Donaghy: Educational Equity for All

This workshop will explore the principles of educational equity for all students including those with moderate to severe and profound disabilities.

Tana Danaghy has been in the field of special education for over eighteen years. Classroom experience ranges from working with preschool through twenty two in the adult transition program. I have worked with students who have emotional disturbances, autism, and multiple severe and profound disabilities. I have had the privilege to spend the last eight year training teachers, paraeducators, administrators and parents across the state in districts, SELPA’s and county offices. My main focus is on curriculum and instruction and programming for all student with moderate to severe disabilities. I consider it an honor to be presenting once again at once of the premier conferences for teachers.

105-205 – Carolle Artiles and Marla Mittskus: Employment/Career Skills Lesson Ideas

The transition from high school to young adulthood is a critical stage for all teenagers. This is especially difficult for students with learning disabilities. This stage requires extra planning and goal setting. Do you have a classroom of students to teach “life after high school” skills to and wonder, “Now what?” Our interactive session will allow you to walk away with sample lesson plans and gain great ideas that will stimulate all ability levels from the mild/moderate to the moderate/severe populations. Presentation is also appropriate for Middle School classrooms.

Carolle Artiles is a Special Education Transition teacher. Over a 30-year period, prior to teaching, she was a counselor in an institutional setting, in a group home setting, and a supervisor in a vocational workshop, as well as an instructional aide in K-12 classroom settings. She is currently teaching at the Upland Unified School District, working with the moderate/severe adult transition program which she initiated and developed over the past six years. The program serves students from freshmen to age 22 and includes community-based instruction, paid and unpaid work experience, and preparation for adult living.

Marla Mittskus knows how to prepare students for life after high school, having been in the business world for 30 years, hiring and firing and managing a staff of 30. Finally, she decided to follow her passion and moved from the corporate sector into the teaching world. She is currently a Transition Teacher at Upland High School, teaching Employment and Career Skills to students with a variety of ability levels and needs. She has developed lessons and activities to teach the “soft skills” of the world of work—the unspoken rules of business. Her goal is to foster the self-confidence, self-advocacy and self-determination that makes the transition to adult life more successful.

106-206 - Dr. Diana Taylor: Authentic Assessment Scale: Individual Student Evaluation, IEP Monitoring and Report Documentation

A fifteen-point scale is used to document progress data for any IEP (or RtI) goal/learning objective. It may be used for daily, weekly or monthly assessments without threating validity, when aligned to reliable curricula. This tool allows the educator to monitor, gauge and report authentic student performance data, and construct reliable evidence.

Dr. Diana Taylor has worked to meet the challenges of students who require special attention as a speech pathologist, education specialist/Resource Specialist, administrator, university professor and currently program director for Education Specialist at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles. Program development and research includes the concepts of inclusion, assessment, leadership and instructional theory as applied to the selection of appropriate adaptations for the struggling learner.

Gail Lancaster: Student Engagement—the Road to Inclusive Practices

Presenter will show audience members techniques, activities and cooperative learning ideas to help engage students. Many of these ideas will be ones that attendees may wish to share with general education teachers to assist them in including reluctant and off-task students. This will be an audience participation event; please come prepared to show what works for you!

Gail Lancaster has been teaching Special Education for 38 years, and has been a CARS+ member for over 20 years. She is currently a Resource Specialist in Oakhurst, California, a rural school in the foothills near Yosemite. She is also an Associate Faculty member at National University, training special education teachers there since 1993. Linda Nimer and Tina Winrow: Managing Your Paraprofessionals

How wonderful it is to have an extra set of hands to help with all of the individual needs of our students. Sometimes that extra set of hands is not doing exactly what you would like them to do. Come to this session to find out ways to work more effectively with your paraeducator and to discover things that might make your life easier and prevent you from pulling out your hair.

Linda Nimer has taught for over 20 years in the public school system mostly at the secondary level. Most of her time was spent as a Resource Specialist as well as a Special Day Class Teacher for the Moderate/Severe students. She retired from Fresno USD four years ago and began working for National University as a Clinical Practice Supervisor working with Interns and Student Teachers. In a former life, she served on the CARS+ state board as the Region 2 Director as well as serving as the organization’s president.

Tina Winrow works at Wawona Middle School, Fresno USD as a SDC teacher. Tina has been teaching mild/moderate students for nearly forty years. She likes to refer to her classes as a “tossed salad” with a little bit of this and a little bit of that to keep her on her toes. She is seriously thinking about retiring in the very near future. Her classroom is one that supervisors often suggest that their teachers/candidates go to observe to learn how much learning goes on in a well-controlled environment. She has been recognized as the Teacher of the Year for Fresno USD.
