The award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. The Award was established by Congress in 1983. Each year, the award recognizes two teachers from each state or U.S. territory who have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas. If there are no deserving candidates, the awards are not given. Elementary teachers are recognized one year, and high school teachers are recognized the next. FBLA News

By Addison Hoornaert, FBLA President

Carrington High School’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter has begun another year of leading members to excel in their business pursuits in high school and later in life. FBLA’s mission is to inspire and prepare students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experience. This year’s theme “A World of Opportunity” reflects the mission and goals that Carrington FBLA members strive to achieve. Under the direction of chapter adviser and business teacher, Josey Skytland, Carrington FBLA currently has a total of 46 members. The Carrington FBLA officer team is comprised of Addison Hoornaert, President; Alayna Martinez, Vice President; Carmen Entzminger, Secretary; Emma Wolsky, Treasurer; Lauren Skadberg, Historian; and Rori Richter, WebMaster. Currently, our members are participating in activities such as wearing professional dress clothes to school, hosting fundraisers, and planning their competitive events for the State Leadership Conference in March, where each member will have a chance to qualify for the National Leadership Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah this summer. The 2019 – 2020 FBLA year began with the officer team attending the North Dakota FBLA Fall Leadership Conference in Bismarck on October 6 and 7. Over 500 FBLA members and advisers from across the state participated in this conference where the emphasis was on developing the leadership skills of local chapter members. Our local officers had the opportunity to participate in sessions that focused on

developiong leadership skills, having a positive attitude, and becoming HEROs. In addition, chapters had an opportunity to learn about state and national FBLA membership and recognition programs from State FBLA Officers, including Emma Wolsky, Region IV Vice President. As the year continues, Carrington FBLA plans to host many more community service projects. At the Elementary Christmas concert, members will host a fundraising bake sale for our national partner, The March of Dimes. Other activities include Chuck-A-Duck and candy sales at home sporting events. These events help offset the cost for members attending the State Leadership Conference. continued on page 6

Social-Emotional Learning

by April Foth, elementary counselor

It’s been a great start to a new year, and it’s so hard to believe that we are already beginning quarter 2. Time really is flying! As the Elementary School Counselor, one of my jobs it to provide social-emotional learning for students. I go into each classroom one to two times per month and cover a variety of topics that assist our students in being a good friend, student and citizen. Here is a quick look at what’s been happening in the classrooms so far this year! Kindergarten is learning about Whole Body Listening through a curriculum called The Incredible Flexible You. We’ve talked about our thought maker (mind) and our feelings keeper (heart) and what it means to follow a Group Plan. 1st Grade is learning about kindness and are using a Kindness Catcher to recognize their peers for acts of kindness. Our next unit will be on fairness. 2nd Grade is learning all about respect. What it is, what it looks and sounds like and ways we can show respect by treating others the way we want to be treated. Our next unit will be on responsibility. 3rd Grade focuses on mindset. We’ve learned what mindset is and the importance of having a positive, can-do, mindset in order to help us succeed at school, sports, and life. We will be discussing goal setting and effort in our upcoming lessons. 4th Grade has been discussing attitude, thoughts, feelings and perseverance in the face of mistakes and failures. We will be moving onto ways to make connections

with others and how to maintain friendships in our next few lessons. 5th Grade has been focusing on important concepts in interpersonal relationships like not judging others, the importance of trust and how to “not take the bait” when others are trying to irritate them. We will be moving into peer pressure and self-concept in the coming weeks. 6th Grade is focused on transitioning from elementary to middle school using a curriculum called Gearing Up for Middle School. We have discussed things like choices, consequences, independence, trust and how our interests can lead us in the direction of possible career choices. We will be looking at body image, healthy lifestyles, and peer & adult relationships in the upcoming weeks. I truly enjoy getting into the classrooms and working with ALL students! It’s always a joy to watch them as they grow and learn from week to week and it’s fun to hear their ideas and see their enthusiasm for life and learning. I look forward to the remainder of the year and all it will bring.

FCCLA Update by Jessica Skadberg

FCCLA president Tessa Page, and Secretary Kambree Kvamme, kicked off the year by attending the District 5 planning meeting in Ellendale. During this meeting, officers from each chapter in the district collaborated to make an agenda for the district meeting set for October 30th at the Gladstone in Jamestown. The meeting will provide members with CPR training, Stop the Bleed training, and information on vaping in North Dakota. All members will also be involved in a community service

project. Thirteen Carrington FCCLA members will be attending the meeting. The chapter is also hosting its annual feminine product drive to donate to Carrington's Daily Bread. Feminine products are some of the most needed items at Daily Bread, but they are the least donated. Any donations can be dropped off to Mrs. Skadberg in room 13 of the high school.

Boxtops for Education Has Gotten Even Easier!

by Jo Pollert Box Tops for Education has gotten even easier. For over 20 years, the program has given families an easy way to earn cash for their school with products that they already buy. To take advantage of this time-saving route, just download the free app from the App Store and put your information in, which takes less than one minute. Then just scan any receipts that you get from the grocery store. If it is a long receipt, just scan it in 2 or 3 pieces. Make sure the date shows on the scanned pic and submit. You will immediately know how much your

boxtops are worth to our school. It is that easy. For a limited time, any boxtops that are scanned are worth double points! If you prefer to continue to cut out boxtops, we will also be taking them in that form. Thank you in advance for donating in this way to our school!

With a combined 73 years of teaching experience, Mr. Braaten with 35 and Mr. Boehmer with 38, they have influenced many lives, both students and colleagues. When asked what this award means to him, Mr. Braaten responded, “The Presidential Award is a highlight of teaching mathematics and science to multiple generations of the same community for thirty- five years. It has been a joy to see students succeed during and after they pass through the hallways of our school. To have a small part in this success is truly a daily reward. This Presidential Award is a great honor to be shared with my family, this community, fellow staff, and our awesome students.” Mr. Boehmer was equally humbled and acknowledged the constant need to improve: “The quote on my door, ‘Success is never earned, it is rented, and the rent is due every day’ really says it all. It reminds us that as teachers we cannot coast. We must strive to improve continually, and in science that includes staying current, which is challenging given all the changes that occur so rapidly.” Congratulations and thank you to both Mr. Boehmer and Mr. Braaten for their continued dedication to our students and to excellence.
