A REFLECTION FROM COLLEGE DIRECTOR, BRENDAN O’BRIEN, ON THE EVENTS OF THE LAST FORTNIGHT AT CARRANBALLAC P-9 COLLEGE.

Dear parents and members of the Carranballac community,

I am pleased to announce that we now have full school council membership with the recent finalisation of our College student school council members. Congratulations to De’Shawn and Marcos who will now carry a student voice at the highest level of Council in the College.

Integral to our students having their leadership skills developed and their voice being acknowledged is the Student Representative Councils (Primary and Secondary). Mr Beiers is the head of Student Leadership and is supported by Chriss Tracey in the overall management of these key groups in the College. We look forward to hearing from our young leaders as the year develops.

I am delighted to announce that we have formed a key Sustainability team in the College who will shortly commence master planning grounds and sustainability improvements which is likely to encompass – garden beds / paddock to plate programs / beautification of grounds / tree planting and more. This team is comprised of: Mr Montgomery (Chairperson), Ms Myors, Brad Broughton ( School Council rep) Ms Birkinhead (Secondary rep), Ms Filmer (Primary rep), Dan Curran (facilities) and Haimen Grigis (Gardening services rep). This team will engage with our Student Representative Council teams to ensure we have student voice and agency as the plan moves forward.

This brings me to Clean Up Australia Day. As per previous years we manage our participation around the College calendar of events and we are not always able to have a completely clear day of involvement for students and the community due to camps/swimming programs and more. Friday 13 March has been set aside for Primary students and Monday 16 March for Secondary. More information

will be available shortly and we encourage our community to support this significant program.

This year we are very proud to be offering a Carranballac Expo. This has been well advertised on our external fence boards. It will be held on 19 March between 5pm and 7pm. Our Expo aims to provide families and students with insight into the curriculum and programs that the College undertakes. We invite our local kinder families along so they can gain an understanding of the College curriculum and culture, ask questions and see the College facilities with the benefits that come with being a Foundation to Year 9 educational facility. Year 5 and 6 families also gain greater knowledge of the Year 7, 8 and 9 Curriculum and the breadth of programs that we have on offer.

Please encourage your friends to attend and see first hand what a great College we have at Carranballac.

Over the years we have been very proud of the international exchange program offered by the College partnering with YMCA South Korea and Korean schools. Unfortunately we have had to cancel this exchange program for 2020. We understand that families and students may be disappointed with such a decision, and hope that your understanding of the current international health issues brings our decision into perspective.

I hope you all have a wonderful fortnight and special thanks to all who have gone out of their way to congratulate me on my pending retirement from Education. It has certainly been an enjoyable journey, especially at Carranballac.

Dear Parents,

Our College promotes and encourages the notion of Nude Food! This initiative promotes school lunches and snacks that are brought to school without excess packaging, thereby reducing the amount of rubbish that needs to go in bins to be sent to landfill. We encourage you to support this initiative with your family please. Mentioning excess packaging and rubbish aligns to our support of Clean Up Australia Day which was held last weekend across many suburbs. We will be running this event on March 13 for Primary school students and March 16 for our Secondary students.

There were many new haircuts, tidy hair styles, and super clean faces for the College photos (School Pix) last Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday at both Schools. We’re sure our families will delight in the printed photos when they arrive. We are very proud of the student leaders who arranged the logistics for this day. They have already demonstrated exceptional leadership skills for the College this year and we have every confidence that they represent our college with great pride.

Every year it is important for us to remind all families of our school drop off zones, parking spaces, and local roads that are dreadfully unsafe. We urge parents to take a few extra minutes to park safely, use the school crossings appropriately and insist your children only ever use the designated and supervised school crossings. These supervisors provide guidance and care and are respected community safety monitors. We all share the responsibility of demonstrating and modelling the correct, safe use of our roads. Our Foundation students recently visited the crossing supervisors for valuable instructional practice to inform them of the right and the wrong way to cross the road.

Breakfast Clubs are well underway at both schools on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students are welcome to come along from 8am for a free breakfast and to enjoy fellowship with their peers. Parents are most welcome to drop off their children and also purchase a great cup of coffee from the student baristas. We ask for a couple of gold coin donations to subsidise the cost of the Year 9 Graduation at the end of the year.

Head LiceParents and carers have the primary responsibility for the detection and treatment of head lice. Your responsibilities include:

• not sending children to school with untreated head lice

• using safe treatment practices which do not place your child’s health at risk

• regularly checking for lice or eggs in the hair of your child and other household members

• notifying the school if your child is affected and when treatment commenced.

Head lice are small, wingless insects that live, breed and feed on the human scalp. They cannot transmit any infectious diseases. Direct contact is required for transmission from person to person, where head lice crawl from head to head.

There is no product available that prevents head lice. However, tying long hair back and checking weekly for lice, using the conditioner and comb method, can help prevent the spread.

According to the Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2009, children with untreated head lice are not permitted to attend school or children’s service centres. However, once treatment has started, they may attend, even if there are still some eggs present.

Year 9 ElectivesYear 9 electives have been operating very successfully and it is pleasing to see the responsibility of these students punctually attending the right school for their day of electives. Year 9 sport competitions have been held at a district level in swimming and volleyball, with the volleyball team achieving runners up. Congratulations to these students and thanks to the students who were proudly wearing their college swimming hats. After school training for tennis, volleyball, basketball and table tennis continues. We are most thankful to our staff who give up their own time to assist and we are still keen to gain additional parent involvement.

Carranballac P-9 College Year 4 students from both Boardwalk and Jamieson Way are attending Warburton Camp this week and participating in a series of activities designed to build personal confidence, team work and leadership skills this week. The program exposes students to a moderate level of physical challenge and provide opportunities to experience and participate in a range of environmental and adventurous activities. While

away students will also participate in activities aligned with the Victorian Curriculum cross-curriculum priority, Sustainability, by attending a native-animal/reptile hands-on session in order to learn about our native animals, their habitats and predators and the ecosystems that support them.

We continue to note an increased number of green chronicle entries that reflect our college values: Respect, Inclusiveness, Resilience, Integrity, and Responsibility. You will have noticed these important values pictorially represented on walls around our college and we are delighted that our expectations and behaviours and continually met by so many of our students.

We are trialling a Homework Club at our college; lunchtimes at Boardwalk, and after school at Jamieson Way on Wednesday from 3pm to 4pm (stay tuned).

Reading every day is vital for learning and is a key component of our homework expectations. Please check our wonderful college website under the ‘Curriculum’ tab for further details about our homework and reading policy. Reading to your child, reading with your child, as well as reading by your child ensures their development as capable and confident readers. Share with your child your favourite book when you were their age. Ask aunties, uncles, grandparents, and cousins what book they loved reading when they were your child’s age. Reading is vital for learners. Enjoy your child’s reading!

Our library and the local library are also great providers of a variety of books that engage our readers even more.

Ask your child to choose a book mark, cut it out and use it to hold their place in a book!

Our BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) ICT Program encourages families with students in Years 5 to 6, and expects students in Year 7 - 9 to provide their own personal laptop devices they can use at home and at school.

When making this decision we strongly recommend the device meets the following specifications:

Processor: Intel i3 (minimum) RAM: 4GB RAM (minimum) Hard Drive: 128 GB (SSD encouraged) Display Size: 11” minimum Operating System: Windows (Windows Pro would be preferable but not necessary) Battery Life: Minimum 6 hrs (students must leave chargers at home, and cannot charge laptops at school)

It is advisable that families steer away from Chromebooks, as these devices are not compatible with Microsoft Office suite of programs. iPads are a great tool, however students also experience reduced capability.

Carranballac P-9 College supplies Students in Years 5-9 and all Classroom Teachers with free access to the Microsoft Office

365 Suite including OneDrive (online cloud storage). You will not need to purchase this software with your computer.

Students will be encouraged to bring their laptop devices to school each day to support their learning in the classroom. When bringing the device to school for the first time, our technicians will connect them to our Department of Education Wireless Internet service. Students will be required to sign an ICT Acceptable Use Agreement in line with College expectations, with Parents reading and signing the document to support students and the College.

Having access to their own computers at all times will enable students to continue to work on learning tasks and complete homework tasks at home.

Monitored ICT devices are valuable tools that provide useful skills to support class work, research curriculum resources and enable teachers to track classroom progress through Compass. This will also prepare our students for the digital landscape ahead of them.

Student Laptops and BYODBRING

YOUR OWN DEVICE

Families with students in Year 5 & 6 are encouraged to provide their own personal laptop device.

In Yr 7, 8 & 9 it is expected that students have their own Laptop to benefit school work in the classroom and at home. Students receive free access to the Microsoft Office Suite, and WIFI access at school for

class work and research.

‘WHERE EVERYBODY BELONGS’

Carranballac P-9 College is looking forward to celebrating Harmony Week from 16-20

March in support of Harmony Day celebrated on 21 March.

Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home - from the traditional owners of this land to those

who have come from many countries around the world.

During Harmony Week, students will participate in many enriching and creative activities associated with storytelling, music, art, sport, cooking, and community involvement. By

participating in our Harmony Week activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it.

Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also

relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.

We are looking forward to a fun and busy week of celebrations!

Thankyou ‘Harmony Week 2020 Team’

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund helps ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their classmates for important, educational and fun activities. It is part of making Victoria the Education State and the Government’s commitment to breaking the link between a student’s background and their outcomes.

CAMPS, SPORTS & EXCURSIONS FUND (CSEF) School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors, excursions encourage a deeper understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a healthy curriculum.

CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child.

The annual CSEF amount per student is:

• $125 for primary school students

• $225 for secondary school students

MORE INFORMATION For more information about the CSEF visit www.education.vic.gov.au/csef

HOW TO APPLY New applicants should contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef

If you applied for the CSEF at your child's school in 2019, you do not need to complete an application form in 2020 unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. You only need to complete an application form if any of the following changes have occurred:

new student enrolments; your child has started or changed schools in 2020 or you did not apply in 2019.

changed family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2020.

Welcome to Scholastic Book Club for 2020!Did you know 91% of kids are more likely to finish books they choose themselves?

This year our school will be participating in Scholastic Book Club. Once a term during the school year a Club catalogue will be sent home with a wide variety of books offered. The Book Club catalogues provide quality, age

appropriate selections from which children can select their own books.

All books offered are carefully reviewed and levelled by a team of experts to appeal to a wide range of abilities and interests. All purchases made through Book Club generate rewards for our school, so we can continue to provide

quality educational material to your children however there is never any obligation to order.

Children improve their reading skills by READING so providing quality books they will WANT to read is a priority. Orders will be processed both online with instructions sent home with your child’s first book club. Orders will be due in online approximately two weeks after the catalogues are taken home. Check the flyer that is provided with

the catalogue for the exact date. We hope you enjoy developing your children’s home library whilst supporting our school.

Place your order from current and previous Scholastic Book Club Issues at www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP

Carranballac P-9 College has embarked on a fabulous journey

as we continue to improve student outcomes, in particular, within

the science curriculum. As part of our College Strategic Plan a team

of three (Bek Pelar, Sue Filmer and Pete Smith) are supporting staff to implement exciting and engaging science experiences

in their classrooms on a weekly basis. We have been participating

in professional development, supported by a two year government

initiative (Primary Maths Science Specialist) immersing us in

innovative pedagogy and delivering this to the primary staff within the

college in a variety of ways.

This year (our second year of the initiative) we are looking forward to building community engagement for

science and the school, beginning with science experiences shared

in the college newsletter. We look forward to sharing the wonderful

and exciting science discoveries our students encounter.

Regards

Bek, Sue and Peter.
