FEBRUARY BOAT SHOW 2005/NOR’EASTER MID-ATLANTIC EDITION By Wendy Gilbert Looking for a quick improvement project for your boat during the off season? Consider carpet tiles. If the first thing that comes to mind is those flimsy tiles that were marketed 30 years ago – you are in for a very nice surprise. Eric Johnson of iCarpetiles says the high quality carpet tiles he sells are ideal for boats. “They are quite heavy – about 2.5 pounds apiece. When you put them on the deck they will lay flat. The carpet tiles are ideal for enclosed cabins.” “They are also easy to cut. All you have to do is score it and fold it like drywall. Stand it up on end and slice down from the back – just like drywall. You can cut it like a loaf of bread,” he says. “It’s a very good do-it-yourself type product. It’s more forgiving. It won’t chip or crack like ceramic tile, and it’s soft and warm,” Johnson continued. When comparing the tiles to conventional carpet, the tiles are much easier for the novice to handle. “If you make a mistake, maybe you can use the piece for a smaller area. You don’t have to worry about ruining a large section of carpet,” Johnson notes. The tiles are 18” x 18” and are sold in boxes of 24, which will carpet a 6- by 9- foot area – about 56 square feet. There are a number of colors and color blends to choose from. All are commercial grade, first quality nylon tiles. The cost for shipping is generally about $14 to $15 a box, depending upon your location. Johnson says a standard box of tiles, including shipping, costs roughly $100. Boaters especially may be able to take advantage of substantial savings by purchasing small lots. “They can pick up mini-lots of 60, 70, 80 tiles. We’ve also done quite a few RVs with them,” Johnson adds. The small lots sell for as low as $0.69/ sq. ft. Internet shoppers can type in their zip code on the company website and get precise costs, including shipping. (Call for the delivered price on large lots.) If a hurricane or wave action swamps your vessel, the tiles can be removed, hosed down, dried in the sun and reinstalled. Tiles that have suffered damage can be easily replaced. Johnson says many commercial businesses purchase the carpet tiles because replacing wear patterns in high traffic areas is a snap. Commercial businesses aren’t the only ones snapping up the tiles. Johnson’s internet sales have quadrupled in a year. “They are really popular. People are looking for an alternative,” he says. Johnson notes that the labor costs alone for installing traditional carpet can go as high as $150. “If you do it yourself, you save money and you have the flexibility ...if you want to change it, you can,” he adds. The company offers a huge variety of colors and patterns, which can be configured in a myriad of ways. “These are not plush pile carpet tiles,” he stated. “These are commercial, low profile, first quality tiles. They are the kind of carpeting you see in hotels and office buildings,” he adds. The reason iCarpetiles can offer such low prices to consumers is that they purchase leftover materials from contractors. “We buy the leftovers. We recycle the product which allows it to have another life,” Johnson says. At the end of the year, they donate products to a local Christian mission that happily carpets homes, office spaces, church nurseries or classrooms. “There are some really interesting applications. Musicians have found the tiles have sound-insulating properties. They tile the walls with them,” Johnson concludes. The commercial nature of the carpet tiles make them perfect for basements and cabins, and Johnson says they are ideal for a houseboat. Most of the time, all the do-it-yourselfer needs is some double-faced tape, a chalk line, a straight edge and a sharp utility knife. When tiling the floor of a sailboat, the tiles will bend easily enough, but installers may need a stronger adhesive. The tiles are made of nylon and are non-allergenic – perfect for boats of all sizes and uses. For additional information (and a free sample), call 1-800-699-7139 or visit their website at iCarpetiles.com. These commercial grade carpet tiles are going over big in non-traditional markets like RVs and boats. Car Car pe pe t Made Sim t Made Sim ple ple
