Carouge at your fingertips A map, some pictures and some drawings to help you to discover Carouge and hopefully to fall under the spell of our neighbourhood. As you stroll down our streets, you will see how Carouge has always managed to combine high-quality craſtsmanship and creativity with a taste for good living and community spirit. In 1790, the Carougeois already practised as many as 30 trades : they worked as cobblers, locksmiths, blacksmiths and tool makers, dredgers collecting sediment from the river, woodcarvers, launderers, dressmakers and coopers. Watchmakers, makers of faience earthernware, and tanners would soon join them. Today, cabinetmakers, card makers, framers, graphic designers, ceramicists, watchmakers and dressmakers maintain this artisan heritage. To show the extent of their activity, the number of jobs in Carouge is as great as the number of inhabitants, thanks not only to the industries which followed the craſts of the 18 th century but also to the boutiques selling clothes, artworks and second-hand books as well as the banks and public services. Away from work, you will quickly appreciate that the Carougeois enjoy their cafés and their promenades quite as much as the jobs to which they devote their talent and effort. Hardworking Carouge grew in the shadow of the cabarets and cafés which show a sharp contrasted sharply with the austerity of Calvinist Geneva. In 1780, the neighbourhood boasted 143 bars. It is this alternative nature which defines the Carouge spirit : basing the quality of work on a sense of wellbeing, mixing the taste for private life with social pleasures, growing up without losing ones soul, geing bigger but remaining welcoming. Hopefully this leaflet, while offering practical information, will help you to discover the beauty and originality of this spirit. The municipal council of Carouge.
