Dear Kiwanians:
Good News regarding our district’s membership numbers : as of June 30, 2012 we are only
down 22 members. This includes several club closings (two Golden K’s where members were
unable to continue due to sickness). We are so sorry about this but understand.
Thank you for working hard to add new members! The monthly report provided to all
districts does not include new members added, but in reviewing all the divisions, it appears
we have had an impressive number of new members added to our rolls during this Kiwanis
year. Again, thank you for your efforts to increase our membership.
To assist you with retention and the addition of new members consider the following:
Club Leaders, to guard against losing members, take a look at your club to see what
changes, if any, should be made. Take the club survey to learn some concerns or
suggestions your members have. Discuss the survey results with all the club members until
you have identified what changes you can go forward and implement, making your club go
from good to great.
Club members have a "need to feed" - The basic needs of people are to feel: Important,
Needed, and Accepted. To help them feel that way, feed them: Love, Praise, Challenges
and Responsibilities.
Send cards on all special occasions
Make members "Star of the Day" (newsletter recognition; be specific, using a BIO)
Send articles to local papers, district bulletin and the KI magazine.
Blueprint to Build (3 to 5 year master plan)
Clubs don't grow without a plan for growth
A plan gives members a definite focus.
With a definite focus, members work.
When members work, they claim ownership.
And ownership builds a contagious club.
Healthy clubs have plans: Unhealthy clubs have excuses.
How many goals does your club have in front of the membership?
MOST CLUBS TODAY DO NOT HAVE GOALS. FOR THE FUTURE, PEOPLE OF TODAY
WANT TO BE PART OF SOMETHING THAT IS ALIVE, ACTIVE AND GROWING.
Start seeing a bigger picture. Look to the future and picture more than one year at a time.
KEEP YOUR MEETINGS FRESH!
Begin and end on time.
Use an agenda. And change it often.
Involve many people-better to involve all.
Once a month, do something new and different..
Use lots of humor.
Change the head table position or do away with the it.
Keep negativity out of your meetings.
WHY MEMBERSHIP MUST BE A PRIORITY
Healthy clubs grow: Unhealthy clubs make excuses.
Healthy clubs ask; Unhealthy clubs apologize.
Good Luck! Doug Day Governor

Optional background checks can help protect your club These days, more organizations protect themselves with criminal-history background checks. Thanks to Kiwanis International’s relationship with Safe Hiring Solutions, your Kiwanis club can do the same. Criminal-history background checks are a new optional service. Safe Hiring Solutions can perform the checks on club members—including those who work with children, manage club accounts or take on other potentially sensitive roles. With Safe Hiring Solutions’ secure electronic process, no paperwork is required for you or your club. Find more information at www.KiwanisOne.org/backgroundchecks.

7th Annual Aktion Club District Convention
The Terrell, Texas, Kiwanis Club sponsors three K-Kids Clubs, with about 300 members throughout one of the local elementary schools. Together,
the students raised more than US$10,000 through this past school year, raising the money pennies and dollars at a time.
The Kiwanis club and Faculty Advisor Margaret Davis, who is K-Kids district administrator for Texas-Oklahoma, spent a lot of time educating students about The Eliminate Project. The students were immediately inspired. They
started with three simple fundraisers: penny war, mud pit-tug of war and jeans days.
During the jeans days, all the students paid US$2 to wear jeans in their all-uniform school. The students learned they had the power to change someone’s life even with a small amount—and it put the focus on a
community outside of their own. At the second grade campus, the students paid US$5 each—and collectively raised US$1,000— to watch the teachers do a tug-of-war over a large hole that the teachers had dug and filled with water. The sixth grade students’ main fundraiser was the penny war.
K-Kids’ pennies and dollars add up
