! The first week ice-breaker was to create a 3D abstract model base on Suprematist Composition 2 by Kazimir Malevich
! The model should maintain the resemblance either as cropped version or composition it entirely
! Explore the potentials of form and space relationship.
![Page 3: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Front View Back View

Self-criticism
! The side view of the model
• The model have symmetry from every angels
• It take form of robot looks alike which is familiar to
human eyes
• No connection of the back and the front
• No abstract and the material was used poorly
![Page 5: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Reflection
The material that I chose to used in this icebreaker is quite different compare to chipboard. Since foam board is a lot thicker compare to chipboard, it take more time to cut it perfectly. By using a fixed blade utility knife and a straight edge to cut the lines that is desire take many tries. The quality of the material is good, however, it is very hard to glue all the pieces together. The level of crafting has a big impact of the outcome. When I begin to cut the pieces out for the first time, it did not came out as a straight line so when I put them together, the model came out to be askew.
![Page 6: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Reflection continue…
The process from the start to finish takes quite a lot times, at least for me. I decided to do all over from the first models. My first time looking at the painting, I saw I human, robot figure so I decide to build a small robot out of it but after the critic from everyone in the class, I start to see I can make more than a small robot figure. I spent more time looking at the painting and begin to draw my ideas into paper, that really help me figure out on what I should focus more rather then just make what I see from the picture. I more satisfy with this model compare to the first one because it actually looks more like what I should be doing in architecture.
The model that I build embody the ideas of how one point of view can transfer a painting into something that we can build it out from. Even though we look at the painting as just the painting itself but having to transfer the images into something that we can build amaze me. Looking at different models that people came up with makes me realize one picture but it can have many ideas that able to transfer into models.
![Page 7: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Second Iteration
Supermatist Composition 2
![Page 8: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Both side views have connection to the model as a house basic concept. It contain windows, door, bookshelf and floor. The cut of some edges is not smooth due to the lack of attention to details.
![Page 9: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
![Page 10: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
• The model take form of the basic structure of a house
• There are no connection to Malevich’s drawing
• The model don’t have an conceptual abstract
• The model does not have a theme that identified what
Malevich’s wanted people to see, which is geometric
abstract art.
![Page 11: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Reflection
! By using foam board as material, I realized that it’s hard to get a precisely cut. The board is a lot thicker compare to chipboard and due to that reason, the interior of the material may not be as smooth when the cut is not can be seen. The foam board gives that nice and smooth looking surface but the edges can be easily tearing off and dense.
! This alliteration does not have a theme that connected back to Malevich’s piece. I need to break the symmetry of the model in order to create more abstract. The scale and the dimension of the model should be change so that it has repetition
![Page 12: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Reflection continue…
! On this second iteration, I did not develop any tectonic languages or create any patterns of repetition. What I find most difficult is how to create a model from looking at Malevich’s piece and try to find the patterns or kits of part and turn that into a one unify theme. There’re also no relationship of how the order are arranged and due to that reason, my second iteration has no biological foundation relate to Malevich drawing. Organization of form and patterns is one of the skills that I need to work on more.
!
![Page 13: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Strengths: • Better craftsmen on
foam board compared to the first iteration
• Able to create more details on each surface (not including the base)
Weaknesses: • Wasn’t able to transfer
Malevich ideas into the model
• The concept was not clear and there are no connection
• There are no complexities in the model
![Page 14: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
By using the same drawing of Malevich’s art piece, I was able to create part of the cropped version. I took the oval part of Malevich’s art and turns it into 3D model. The model has flexibilities and curvilinear lines that connected the two separate piece into one. The model have repetition, which is the triangles that going around the oval shape
![Page 15: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
![Page 16: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
![Page 17: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
The model have certain repeated patterns, however, it is not abstract. I was able to understand more in breaking symmetry and
create asymmetrical. Although I tried to incorporated Malevich idea in the model, there are no relationship between the elements.
![Page 18: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Reflection
In this model, I had more of an understanding concept of structure in create asymmetrical and repetition patterns. I realize I should have more organization in my theme in order to develop connection between each element. If the model have opening in front or the back of the oval, that will create the intentional unfamiliar to viewer which make it more interesting. I also notice that if I able to add another layer of structure, the model would be more complex and have more movements.
![Page 19: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Fourth Iteration
Suprematist Composition 2
![Page 20: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
1. Asymmetrical angle
2. Created opening
3. Added layer of elements
4. Model contain primary
5. Graduated higher structure
![Page 21: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
![Page 22: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Strengths: Weaknesses:
• Created Hierarchy
• Created opening
• Able to see the interior
• Created depth and dynamic
• Wasn’t able to transfer all the ideas of Malevich to the model
• Need to work on level of craftsmen
![Page 23: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Reflection
By adding another layer of structure to the model, I was able to see the development in increase complexity and dynamic. Having the opening in front of the oval shape gives the model more details and looks more attractive. From the side view, the opening reveal more depth and the volume increase from the top to becoming wider toward the bottom. With the asymmetrical angle connected the two individual pieces help unify the theme of the model. The model expresses it complexity due to transformation from one piece to another.
![Page 24: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
! Free hand drawing using charcoal to create varieties of theme.
! Choose an adjective that describes the concept that the model should base on.
! Develop the drawing in many form and shapes to achieve that desire goal.
! The drawing and the adjective should have connection to each other.
![Page 25: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
1. Choose an adjective
2. Define the adjective and find the synonyms
3. Develop drawing into desire piece
4. The drawing must contain the theme or subject matter that connect to the chosen adjective
5. Build a model base on the drawing
![Page 26: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
DRAMATIC
![Page 27: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
The model was built based on the charcoal drawing. It take form from individual piece of trapezoid shape. The model can be rotated
in certain ways.
3D Abstract Dramatic Model
![Page 28: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
By having each individual piece of trapezoid in difference sides allow the model have connection to the chosen adjective, dramatic. It’s also help balance the model so that it could rotate in many ways.
Rotation of the model
![Page 29: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
![Page 30: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
This 3D abstract model was built based on the charcoal drawing that associates with an adjective, dramatic. I wanted to create different sides of the same shape of trapezoid in order to have repetition. This repetition help creates complexities yet have parallel axes. What interesting about this model is the rotation because it able to revolve in many ways yet still has that balance to stand in certain ways. I was happy that the model connected to the theme that I chose but if I have opportunity to make any changes, I will create opening on each piece to that hide-and-see which allow the interior to have more layers. Since the voids are open, it will be more appealing and alluring to see when the interior layers have added.
![Page 31: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
The Second Iteration
Dramatic 3D Abstract Model
![Page 32: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
![Page 33: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Self Criticism
• Different opening on each piece
• Don’t have a unify theme
• No relationship connection between the
different opening
• No clear concept
• No purpose to different cuts
![Page 34: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/34.jpg)
Reflection Even though the model still maintains the concept of abstract and dramatic, the different cuts on individual is one of the biggest issues. The cut created a cool look, more abstract but there are no connection or relationship between each it. Due to that reason, the model lost it purpose in defining rhythm and dualities. The repetition helps create a transformation in rotation but there no logical thinking or reason behind the cuts. The model have an oblique scale which is interesting to see because it break off the symmetry.
![Page 35: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/35.jpg)
In this iteration, we have to create a framework of the previous model. The framework is help build the foundation for the structure.
It help me understand more about the outcome of the model.
![Page 36: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/36.jpg)
![Page 37: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/37.jpg)
• Unify theme
• Connection between cuts
• Oblique angles
• Abstract looking
• Repetition in pattern
• Wasn’t able to create space between each piece
• Cannot tell any specification about each piece individually
• The alignment was little off
![Page 38: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)
Reflection
The mode have a unify theme due to the same cut through out each individual piece. However, the alignments of the cut don’t have rhythm to it. Having all the pieces in different order help define the dynamic and the oblique in creating asymmetrical. By looking at the model, the oblique scale brings out the abstract qualities. If I were able to pull each of the trapezoids apart to create more space or adding another layering, the model would become more complex and have more movement.
![Page 39: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)
Framework of 3D Abstract Model
Continue…
![Page 40: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/40.jpg)
• The model is aligned in more organized scale
• Had oblique structure
• The repetition of pattern
• The transformation allow the model to have more balance
• The way that the angles is align create intersection between each cut.
![Page 41: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/41.jpg)
I created space between each piece by putting join in order to design the hierarchy. However, the space between the piece is not
far enough to tell the different.
![Page 42: Carmina Khuu Spring 2014 Portfolio](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052513/568c4f241a28ab4916aac352/html5/thumbnails/42.jpg)
This framework was slightly a bit more successful compare to the last one. By creating space between each trapezoid helps brings out the contrast, however, the space was not big enough to tell the different from the front view. The repetitions of the pattern are clearer since each piece supported each other and have a logical connection. If the framework have layers between each space that is created then it will have a significant different in term of shapes and form of the model.
