Selective High School Congratulations to all of our Year 6 students who have been offered a placement into a Selective High School. Well done to the students, parents and teachers for your commitment to learning through an extended period of time. We offer our best wishes to all the children on waiting lists and hope they receive good news in the near future. collecting students. It is very dangerous to double park as it blocks traffic and children entering vehicles are in real danger of being badly injured. Rangers do patrol the roads surrounding the school and will issue infringement notices to anyone breaking the law. We look forward to having safer roads around our school.

Road Safety Competition Road Safety is a regular item on the P&C agenda in our goal to keep the school community as safe as possible from avoidable accidents and injury. Next week the poster competition will conclude and 8 vouchers valued at $25 each will be presented to the winners. The senior members of the SRC will assist me to select the best posters. Thank you to the P&C for organising the prizes. The Road Rules for each grade are: Kindergarten: “ Holding hands when crossing the road at crossings” Year One: “Wearing seat belts and young children not sitting in the front seat of a car.” Year Two: “ Speeding “ particularly around school zones Years 3- 6 : “ Double Parking & Parking in No Parking Zones. GOLD and SILVER AWARDS are given out at our next K-6 Assembly : 11.30 am Monday 30 June, 2019 in the COLA.

Parents are most welcome to attend the award assembly at 11.25 am each week to see their child receive their very special award. Silver awards are presented to children when they have received 5 Bronze Awards = 50 tokens. Gold awards are presented when a child receives 10 Bronze awards = 100 tokens

Some of the responses were great. I think a snake would be an excellent driver because it has a good sense of direction and it can go underground when there is a lot of traffic. A great animal to drive would be a tiger so when people see it they’ll get scared and make way for him in traffic (He would use his paws to drive) A monkey would make a great driver because it has been proven that a monkey is the closest animal to a human and a human can drive. An octopus would be a great driver because they can have 2 hands on the wheel, 1 for the accelerator, 1 for the brake, 1 for coffee (and 1 to look at their phone ) + 2 extra hands 🚗🚗

A dog would be a great driver because a dog is a quick learner. I think that every animal can drive as long as they are driving a Tesla because Tesla’s drive by themselves A Panda would be a good driver because they are very cute so people will let it go first. I think that a fly would make a great driver because it is so small, so it can squeeze thought tiny gaps easily. A great animal that can drive is a cat because a cat can see clear in the night

4 Pink’s sizzling starts

WHOOSH! The bright orange fire danced across the rooftops of my poor village, like a dancer prancing across the state, not once stopping to take a break. I could hear my parents telling at me, telling me to escape, to live! But I disagreed, my parents, my village were the most important things in my whole life. I didn't know what to do for once. SSSSSS! Bright, orange, fiery flames devoured my beloved home leaving nothing but a pile of ashes. I was scared, I was frightened , but as I looked up from my trembling hands, my whole village was burnt to death except me. I had cheated something painful. I was aware of my consequences, so I swore to myself that I would achieve eternal life, to obey my parents’ wishes.

The mist moved towards the tent in the middle of the campsite. Noisy screams and horrors was all I could think about. Slowly I walked out of my little tent to look at the one in the middle. The mist was cold against my skin. Suddenly I was drifting away from the ground. I was flying away. Higher and higher.

My heavy axe crashed into the tree stump as I tried to survive by fire. I had to hunt down animals for warmth and food. I was hiking alone when I tripped over a rock; I limped on until I found a sturdy place to sleep. My knees gave way; I fell on to my front side. I yelled for help but no one came. I rolled myself over and lay there for a day. Staring into the bright blue sky. As night came, I fell asleep, freezing, I promised myself that I would find something to help me survive.

Lost and astray an old woodman threw his backpack to the ground to set up camp for the night. Roar! the wood man rushes out to find the large rock formation was moving. It pushed up a sharp horn and charged at the frightened woodman then settled down again waiting for another person to come wandering into its path.

Athletics - 1500m

As there will be events at the NSWPSSA State Athletics carnival in the 1500m in November 2019, the Sydney East PSSA and Botany Bay zone will also conduct events in the 1500m at this year's carnivals.

Events will be held in the boys' and girls' divisions in the 10 Yrs, 11 Yrs and 12 Yrs divisions.

To be considered to compete at the Botany Bay PSSA carnival, schools must nominate athletes based upon the following factors:

- submitting a certified time from a recognised Meet, held in the period 1 September 2018 to 13 August 2019. For example Little Athletics athletes in the 11 or 12 year age groups.

- a high level of performance at Botany Bay zone cross country i.e. top ten placing (more so for the 2km 10 year old runners)

The Botany Bay executive will then discuss and select athletes from the zone to be invited to compete.

Schools will be notified via email once the finals list has been determined. The decision of the Selection Panel will be FINAL.

Athletes will need to also take into consideration that the 1500m events will be conducted at the Botany Bay zone athletics carnival on Day 1 as the first event, prior to Relay finals. Please understand that the 800m heats are also run on this day.

Please note: nomination for this event is to be strictly limited to talented athletes who have the potential to represent at the Sydney East Regional level. It is not a 'come and try' event. The top two (2) placegetters in each event from the Botany Bay Carnival will be selected to compete at the SEPSSA Athletics Carnival at SOPAC on Thursday 18 October 2019. If you have any questions about the qualification or suitability of a student to nominate, please contact Mrs Hanley. Also if you feel your child is worthy of consideration in this event at our zone carnival, please provide details to Mrs Hanley. Nominations to compete at BB zone, must be entered by Friday 2 August to allow time for consideration before data entries are required. You will be notified if your child meets selection criteria to compete at the BB zone carnival.

ATHLETICS TRACK CARNIVAL YEARS 3-6

Tuesday 30 July, Term 3, Week 2 On Tuesday 30 July 2019, the school will be holding the Athletics Track Carnival at Hurstville Oval, Dora Street Hurstville. Children will be expected to wear school sports uniform, a school hat and sunscreen. All children should bring their recess, lunch and a bottle of water. There is no canteen available. All parents are invited to attend but must make their own way to the oval. If you wish to take your child home early, please ensure you inform your child’s roll teacher prior to leaving.

Permission notes and payment are required before the carnival

PROGRAM NB: There are changes to the program from previous years. The day’s program will be as follows, the times are approximate only: 8.30am Children arrive at school. The 200m, 800m and field events at Zone Level are run as a combined “junior event”. To determine the Zone junior team, the 3 best times at school level (combining years 8,9,10 results) are taken.

NEWSLETTER

A message from the Coordinator

Sadly, it is my last official week as the Coordinator at the Carlton service. In the last 2 years I have had the most amazing time meeting all the children and families. I also really enjoyed meeting my amazing educators and team. I am lucky to have worked at such an awesome school!

Starting from next week, I will transfer over to another school in Sutherland. I will really miss Carlton and everything it brings, but I will stay in touch. We would like to give a big welcome to Elizabeth known as Liz who will be taking over the Coordinator role. Liz started this week and we have all embraced her into our team with open arms. We are excited about what the future brings. Liz and I will have frequent contact during my departure, as the schools are within the same region and not far away from each other in distance. Liz has previously worked at the Woollahra Helping Hands service as a

Coordinator. Liz has previously worked teaching adults and children over a ten-year period. Liz has also worked as a tutor over the last ten years. Liz is excited to be coming onboard. Helping Hands News

This last week has been a bit of an adventure settling into our new alternative space at the basement. We would like to thank all the children and families for their patience with this transition. As most parents are aware, the change in environment was due to the floor at the hall been re-surfaced. In the last week, we have been able to set out a routine in the basement area, the children have responded well to this. This new basement area will be where we operate and will now be based for Before School Care sessions. The kitchen in the new space allows us to provide a healthier and fuller breakfast choices for the children, while also allowing them to learn some cooking! This has seen many smiles with the children engaging in cooking experiences and learning ‘domestic skills’ such as putting their dishes in the dishwasher when they are finished with their food. This new space will also be our back up space in case we are relocated from the hall again. We have really enjoyed outdoor play in the newly built cola area where handball competitions have shown to be very popular. Ribbon dancing has also seen to be popular this week with children showing lots of excitement and enthusiasm when dancing to their favourite tunes with our ribbons. However, we know how much

Children have been given the option to play sport in the oval area throughout the week to engage in more intense physical activity such as cricket and soccer matches after afternoon tea time. We had such a fun time during our last week of Vacation Care. A noteworthy day was our Super Science Incursion! We also really enjoyed our ‘Hawaiian Luau’ day pretending that we are in Hawaii!;

Nutrition and Vitality

This last week has been amazing in terms of food and cooking! With our newly designed kitchen we are able to make meals and food like never before as well as engaging in cooking experiences! Some examples of this are: Our Community

As some of you may of noticed there has recently been a lot of construction that has taken place around the school during the school holidays resulting in us relocating etc. For the safety of the children we have been engaging in frequent chats about where the ‘bounds’ are as well as placing down cones for visual references. All our educators carry walkie talkies and communicate to each other constantly when a child moves areas. Plans have been set up so educators know the line of supervision.

Starting from next week we are back in our usual space, the hall in the afternoons, however we will continue Before School Care in our new basement space as the new kitchen allows us to provide a healthier breakfast for the children.
