Reception of the body

Priest: With faith in Jesus Christ, we receive the body of our brother Carlton for burial. Our brother was washed in Holy Baptism and anointed with the Holy Spirit. Let us therefore, with confidence, pray to God our Heavenly Father, the giver of life that He will raise him to perfection in the company of the Saints.

(Silence is kept)

Priest: I bless the body of Carlton with Holy Water that recalls His baptism of which St. Paul writes: All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were

Page 5: Carlton Levy's Program

baptized into His death. By baptism in His death we were buried together with Him, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live a new life. For if we have been united with Him by likeness to His death, so shall we be united with Him by likeness to His resurrection.

On the day of his baptism Carlton was incorporated into Christ. On the day of Christ’s coming may he be clothed with righteousness.

Priest: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Priest: Let us pray. O God of grace and glory, we remember before You this day our Brother Carlton. We thank You for giving him to us, his family and friends, to know and love as a companion on our earthly pilgrimage. In Your boundless compassion, console us who mourn, give us faith to see in death the gate of eternal life so that in quiet confidence, we may continue our course on earth, until by Your call we are re-united with those who have gone before, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All: Amen. HYMN Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

1. Joyful, joyful, we adore thee, God of glory, Lord of love; hearts unfold like flowers before thee, opening to the sun above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;

Page 6: Carlton Levy's Program

drive the dark of doubt away. Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

2. All thy works with joy surround thee, earth and heaven reflect thy rays, stars and angels sing around thee, center of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea, chanting bird and flowing fountain, call us to rejoice in thee.

4. Mortals, join the mighty chorus which the morning stars began; love divine is reigning o’er us, binding all within its span. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife; joyful music leads us sunward, in the triumph song of life.

Homily

Apostles’ Creed

Priest: In the assurance of eternal life given at Baptism, let us proclaim our faith and say:All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated on the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.

OFFERTORY HYMN (all stand) Stand up, Stand up for Jesus

(An Offering will be taken in aid of Kiwanis Club of Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Church)

1. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; lift high his royal banner, it must not suffer loss. From victory unto victory his army shall he lead, till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey; forth to the mighty conflict, in this his glorious day. Ye that are brave now serve him against unnumbered foes; let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

Page 11: Carlton Levy's Program

3. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, stand in his strength alone; the arm of flesh will fail you, ye dare not trust your own. Put on the gospel armor, each piece put on with prayer; where duty calls or danger, be never wanting there.

The Presentation of the Offerings

All: Father, we offer you these gifts which you have given us; this bread, this wine, this money. With them we offer ourselves, our lives and our work, to become through your Holy Spirit, a reasonable, holy and lively sacrifice. As this bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, so may we and all your people become channels of your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Eucharistic Prayer

Priest: The Lord be with you.

All: And also with you.

Priest: Lift up your hearts.

All: We lift them up to the Lord.

Priest: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

4. Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the strife will not be long; this day the noise of battle, the next the victor’s song. To those who vanquish evil a crown of life shall be; they with the King of Glory shall reign eternally.

Page 12: Carlton Levy's Program

All: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Priest: It is right and a good and joyful thing always and everywhere to give You thanks, Father Almighty, Everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who rose victorious from the dead and comforts us with the blessed hope of everlasting life. For to Your faithful people, O Lord, life is changed, not ended, and when our mortal body lies in death, there is prepared for us a dwelling place eternal in the heavens. Therefore, we praise You, joining our voices with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of Your Name All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might; heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest!

The Commendation

Priest: Give rest, O Christ, to your servant Carlton with your saints.

All: Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

Priest: You only are immortal, the Creator and Maker of Makind; and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and to earth shall we return. For so did you ordain when you created me saying, “you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” All of us go down to the dust; yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Page 15: Carlton Levy's Program

All: Give rest, O Christ, to your servant Carlton with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

Priest: Let us commend our brother Carlton to the mercy of God our Maker and Redeemer. Deliver your servant Carlton, O Sovereign Lord Christ, from all evil, and set him free from every bond, that he may rest with all your saints in the eternal habitations; where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you live and reign, one God forever and ever.

All: Amen

Priest: Into your hands, O merciful Saviour, we commend your servant Carlton. Acknowledge we humbly beseech you, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive him into the arms of your mercy, in the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light.

All: Amen.

(The Minister then dismisses the people with these words.)

Priest: Alleluia! Christ is risen.

All: The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

All: Thanks be to God.

Recessional Hymn: Battle Hymn of The Republic

1. Mine eyes have seen the glory Of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage Where the grapes of wrath are stor’d; He hath loos’d the fateful lightning Of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on.Refrain Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! Glory, glory, hallelujah! His truth is marching on.

2. He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment seat; Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet! Our God is marching on.

3. In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea, With a glory in His bosom That transfigures you and me; As He died to make men holy Let us die to make men free, While God is marching on.

4. He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave, He is wisdom to the mighty, He is honor to the brave; So the word shall be His footstool, and the soul of time His slave, Our God is marching on.

As long as I can remember, my father has been a KIWANIAN. In fact there is an entry in my baby book regarding my father taking me to my first of many Kiwanis meetings.

There have been countless meetings, numerous conventions, endless dances, not to mention BBQs, fish frys, Labour Day projects, and the list continues. Kiwanis is woven into the tapestry of my dad’s life. He was a dedicated KIWANIAN.

Then there was the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, Tennis Jamaica, Immaculate Prep PTA, CVSS, United Way, Orange Grove Citizens Assoc, Environmental Foundation of Jamaica, Jaycees, Jamaica Cancer Society, and the list continues... And don’t forget dominoes at every opportunity!!!

Yet, he was involved in anything we (the kids) were interested in – swimming, tennis, squash, even picnicking in Hollywell Park.

Yes, his family and friends were the most important aspect of his life. He loved and adored mummy and I know he was very, very proud of us, his daughters. Then when the grandkids came, his cup runneth over. Their name for him was “Grumpy” and he delighted in it.

His is a life well served. Carlton E. Levy, CD, JP. Husband, Father, Grandpa and Friend. He is home, because he was a good and faithful servant. I love you daddy.

Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult things we can go through, so much more if it is a father. No words can express what I am feeling right now and I’m sure only time can help me accept the fact. I have many wonderful memories of my dad and I would like to share a few.I am a “Milo” connoisseur and my dad, well he was the greatest “Milo Chef ”. I think I know his secret. He added extra sugar to his recipe. The tradition passed on through generations, as Isaac, Abby and Gabby know the magic of grandpa’s “Milo”.

There were many people who cheered me on at my tennis matches, but my father’s voice always found me. A simple “that’s it Kelly” and my racquet was then on the attack.

Those who say we exist in an era when there are no heroes just don’t know where to look. To discover a genuine hero, occasionally all we have to do is look closer to home. Few things in the world are more influential or impressive than a father’s encouraging efforts throughout the years. His laughter at Sunday dinner. His commanding presence when he entered a room. His cheers from the sidelines. His words of confidence in me. His ability to see my dreams. His hand on my shoulder. His proud smiles. Dad had a thousand ways to say “I love you.”

Dad, I love you, not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you have made me. I am you. You are my world, my foundation, my biggest fan, my moral compass, my champion and my hero. Thank you for believing in me before I believed in myself.

You lived. You loved and you left a lasting legacy. I will miss you so.

To me, my grandpa was a mighty rescuer who was always there for me. He was my super hero that could carry me on his arm and fly around the universe with me on his shoulder, and I knew I’d always be safe there. My grandpa was the world’s greatest grandpa I could ever have. Whatever I wanted he’d provide it. There is something about grandpa that always held a space in my heart. Grandpa couldn’t have been a better grandpa. He said “that’s where I got my good looks from”. I LOVE my grandpa too much to write it all down. My grandpa was very close to me and to see him leave me broke my heart a lot but I know he’s in a better place with God watching my every move and listening to me. I tell God every night to keep my grandpa close to him and to let him know how much I miss him. I can never forget my grandpa; he’s the only super grandpa that made my world a special place. I never did call him grandpa. I called him Grumpy. It was the grand children’s special name for him. I knew he never minded it cause every time we called it he’d turn around and smile and respond. My grandpa loved me a lot and I knew that because no one else but the grandchildren could call him that special name. I wish grandpa was still here with me giving me hugs and kisses, but it was time to let him go. God has reasons for when he’s ready for someone new to enter heaven. I knew some day I had to let go of grandpa but I never knew it was going to be so sudden. I know grandpa misses me too and he knows how much I miss him. I’d sacrifice anything for my grandpa. I’m going to miss the kisses, the hugs, and being loved by him, but most of all being called his granddaughter. To me that was like being called the queen of everything. I’m really sorry grandpa won’t be here to see me grow up.I love you Grumpy and miss you so much. Take good care of him God, I know you will.

FAMILY TRIBUTE

My dear Winsome, Kim and Kelly, I cannot tell you how shocked and unprepared I was to hear the news that Carlton had died. So, I know how much more devastated you must have been. We know that he did not waste the life that God gave him, but did a lot of good for a lot of people both nationally andinternationally, and he will long be remembered with great affection and regard. This is of some comfort. I think of this reading from Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) as appropriate for him: “Yet these also were godly men whose virtues have not been forgotten;Their wealth remains in their families, their heritage with their descendants;Through God’s covenant with them their family endures, their posterity for their sake. And for all time their progeny will endure, their glory will never be blotted out;Their bodies are peacefully laid away, but their name lives on and onAt gatherings their wisdom is retold, and the assembly proclaims their praise.” (Sirach 44:10-15) I remember the comment that was made of Abel “he, though dead, yet speaketh.” His life speaks, and tells us whatever we need to know about him. When Carlton was a young boy we, his relatives, called him “George.” Even then, though, he was a kind child and very outgoing. I am the young girl in the famous “Morais” photograph with him - each of us standing self-consciously on the other side of the ever present table which appears in practically every photograph of that era. We loved each other, as children do, and though we never saw each other a great deal in our adult lives, I continued to hold him in my heart. He remains there today at his death.

Page 25: Carlton Levy's Program

The last time I saw Carlton, he and I were commiserating about the fact that he and I were wearing stents in our arteries. Some few months after we saw him, Lodie Fay died, and in December 2009, I had emergency open heart surgery. Now George is gone, May His Soul Rest in Peace and May Light Perpetual Shine Upon Him. Winsome, Kim, Kelly, remember that we are Christians and, as Saint Paul says, we do not grieve as the pagans do, for we know that we will see him again at the resurrection. He is just on the other side of the curtain. Peace,Joy WilliamsCousin

A Tribute to EFJ Vice Chairman and Child DirectorMr. Carlton Edmond Levy, C.D., J.P

A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica will never be the same! The current Board of Directors all joined with Mr. Carlton Levy as the Vice Chairman and looked to him for guidance and direction. He had just begun his third term as Child Director and we could always count on him to read and properly review all the papers before the meeting. He was also our reliable source on procedural matters - what required a vote or a motion and, as sometimes was necessary, what required no further discussion. Mr. Levy kept our meeting on time and in line.

It is clear that Carlton was a selfless man of service. There was not a time when we needed him that he did not make every effort to be available to us, whether it was our regular Friday visits to his home to sign cheques, or to present awards or make speeches on behalf of the Foundation. Most recently, his role at the EFJ led to a nomination to the National Steering Committee of the UNDP’s Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme and Carlton did not shirk the extra responsibility, but embraced it and stepped right in to attend meetings and play a role.

We at the EFJ were very pleased to have been able to celebrate this spirit of service with his recent National Honour, the Commander of the Order of Distinction. It is a most deserving award and a fitting tribute to his life and work not only with the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica, but with his other “families” – the Council of Voluntary Social Services, Kiwanis International, Tennis Jamaica, Jaycees and Citizen’s Advice Bureau.

To his most immediate family, his wife Winsome, his daughters and other family members, we extend our hand of support during this difficult time. We are honoured that you have shared this treasure of yours with all of us. Our condolences to you and may you remain strong in the memories of his love and life fulfilled.

Perhaps they are not stars, but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.-Eskimo ProverbWith best wishes from the entire board and staff of the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica.

Tribute to Carlton E. Levy, C.D., J.P.Citizens Advice Bureau, by Executive Director Emeritus, Hazel Monteith O.D. J.P.

For sixteen wonderful years, I had the privilege to work with Carlton as the Executive Chairman of the Citizens Advice Bureau. He was introduced to the organization by the late Elsie Sayle, herself a matriarch of Social work at the Council of Voluntary Social Services.

Carlton was very committed to social work and he had a deep compassion about how he could affect positive change for the needy. He was a Good Samaritan, contributing his knowledge, kindness and time to the various welfare projects monitored by the Bureau. He held strong views, strong principles, highly ethical and had a vision way beyond what the rest of us could sometimes comprehend. He was always available to listen, consider and provide positive advice. And when times became very difficult and funding seemed to be diminishing, he was incredibly positive and optimistic, a real fighter, determined not to give in. He is best remembered for the special technique of his infectious good will that he used to pioneer monetary donations from his corporate friends to donate, kind and cash to the Bureau. Social networking earned him respect and admiration from those whose lives he touched, as his integrity and trust were always intact. The Citizens Advice Bureau has been a beneficiary of this trust.

Our community has lost a great patriarch, and we salute his goodwill. We extend love and prayers to his wife Winsome and family, on his passing.

“A race well run”.

Hazel Monteith O.D. J.P.

JAMAICA CANCER SOCIETYTRIBUTE TO CARLTON LEVY, CD, JP

The Jamaica Cancer Society expresses its condolence to the family of Carlton Levy. We use this opportunity to recognise his work for the Society, through his leadership of the Relay for Life committee, his membership of the Jamaica Cancer Society and by supporting his daughter, Kim Mair, former Administrative Officer of the Jamaica Cancer Society. Carlton Levy was a Jamaican committed to changing the outcome and opportunities for all Jamaicans through his energy and his network. This was evidenced at the Jamaica Cancer Society where he brought his association with the Kiwanis movement, the United Way and his family, to support the drive to remove cancer as a burden on the Jamaican people.

Through his leadership, Carlton established the Relay for Life event as a major fund raiser for the Jamaica Cancer Society. The event now provides the major source of income at the JCS and creates an opportunity to promote the message that early prevention saves lives. Carlton Levy, while being generous in spirit, and winsome with his personality, displayed sharp details of an experienced businessman, coordinating the many moving parts of the Relay committee, the many different and at times competing personalities that came together to create success. For us at the Jamaica Cancer Society, Carlton Levy became the sculptor, who was able to take the unrefined clay of an idea and create a magnificent work of art. We will miss him, but we are confident that he has done his work and God’s work, and we know, that through his family and his memory, Jamaicans will continue to be improved.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF THE PROPRIETOR’S STRATA PLAN #364, COLUMBUS HEIGHTSTRIBUTE TO CARLTON LEVY

Mr. Levy was a past Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Proprietor’s Strata Plan #364, Columbus Heights, from 1990 to September 2005, when he sold his apartment, a period of fifteen (15) years.

He was a strong advocate for the amendment of the Registration (Strata Titles) Act to correct some fundamental weaknesses, including the non-payment of contributions by Proprietors for the maintenance of common areas. We are pleased that he was around when the amendment to this Act took place in December 2009.

As Chairman, he was very efficient and knowledgeable in the operations of the strata. He was always punctual for meetings; he kept them short and focused. He could be called upon for his advice or opinion at anytime.

He was a man of the highest integrity with a warm and jovial personality which he blended with a keen sense of humor. In summary, he was a decent human being. He shall be sadly missed by all of us at Columbus Heights.

May his soul rest in peace and light perpetual shine upon him.

Columbus Heights Executive Committee
