COMEDY, LOVEand a bit with a dog, thats what they want.

So says Philip Henslowe about Two Gentlemen in the film Shakespeare in Love and thats what we

got in distant Carshalton in October. However Henslowe strangely failed to mention the music, the

colour and the unexpected appearance of characters from a different play altogether only the Carlton

and the Cains could bring that off!

The evening opened with a solemn prologue from Carl Whiteside who later appeared as Sir Eglamour, the valiant knight and escort. He was quickly overtaken by brawling courtiers, in turn displaced by the

Two Gentlemen themselves, Valentine and Proteus, a laid back couple as played by Paul Flannery (his

Carlton debut) and Ian Ward. And so to Comedy: This pair had the timing and touch to get the most

humour out of the increasingly fantastical story. Valentines scene with the rope ladder and Proteus

hypocracy when betraying his friend were great and when were Jaffa Cakes so funny before? And that

was before the arrival of the comedians proper the lugubrious Launce (James Grayston), and the

cheeky Speed (Katy Hebbourn). Watching Katy attempting to unobtrusively smuggle all the suitors gifts

including a birdcage and a crash helmet under her little jacket was almost as funny as watching the antics

of the liveliest hobby horse Ive ever seen (a blood relation to the Monty Python Holy Grail steeds if the

coconut shells are anything to go by.) Launces great moment was the listing of his fiancees vices and

virtues this lore on the subject of women delivered with great conviction by James, who obviouslyknows what hes talking about!

For Love we had the lovely, though poignant (and hilarious) Julia (Kristen Bowditch) wringing her

hanky and following her lover in disguise, but not before she, Lucetta (Julia Boggio) and the Jewels had

delighted us with the suitors song, complete with supple hands and rolling eyes a Bollywood

spectacular! Congratulations to Jayne Giordanella, the choreographer of this and the other extravaganzas

also to Paula Hoppins, Aisling Stevens, Cindy Graves (dog-lover and triangle virtuoso extraordinaire) and

Paolo Giordanella (what did he say in Italian??) And I really enjoyed the letter scene Julia drops a

mean scroll and Kristen wrapped in her dignity and several yards of wallpaper is an unforgettable image!

At the Empressessess Court there was the ravishing - and sexily husky on opening night - Silvia

(Arabella Butler), ably dusted and arranged by Vince Lewer, her henchman. How glad we all were that

she looked nothing like her picture! And how much Arabella was able to do with the sweet and virtuousSilvia these heroines are not the easiest of parts to make interesting or sympathetic, let alone funny!

For Love of course we also had the tragically misguided (or possibly lost!) Romeo (Andrew Candish)

and his lovely Juliet (Kay Elliot). As someone who always hopes that things will turn out well every time

I see Romeo and Juliet, it was wonderful when they did this time, thanks to the well-timed intervention of

one (or was it two?) friar/s (Jane Lewis).

Henslowe didnt mention it, but on the stage the course of true love never does run smooth, so where

you have love you also have Opposition in this case the terrifyingly imperious Empress (Kate Rogers)

gliding around the stage in a shimmering aura of power (and a great gold dress!) and the rival suitor,

Thurio (Mike Norman-Smith, giving his debut but we hope not his last Carlton performance!) Between

Verona and Milan, the course of travel doesnt run smooth either especially not if you fall in with the

Terrible Brigand Band including Alison Needles Raffan (ever ready to unknit your sinews) and James

Eyebrows Derbyshire, who gave the phrase brigands camp a whole new meaning

And so to the Bit with the Dog, and the great double act that was Launce and Crab. From the

mournful song (beautifully sung, James) and howls in act 1 onwards, this was a great partnership. And

special congratulations to Jeff Graves not only for being the first cast member off book!! The energy,

timing and concentration he put in to his performance was a joy to watch, from lazing on the floor to

instant alert, ears almost visibly pricked, and bounding on and off I was tired just watching, but that

might have been from laughing so much.

And I havent even mentioned the excellent music arrangements by Robert Clay and Mike Ahmad,

Lucie Morriss make up and Pippa Cains beautiful costumes and set. Many Carlton plays Ive seen havebeen excellent, but this one was probably the most spectacular visually. We might not be paid, but

nothing about this production looked or sounded amateurish! And above all, congratulations to the soon-

to-depart Adam and Pippa Cain on an original, imaginative and innovative piece of scripting and

direction, and on instilling such a cracking pace. What a swan song, as the Bard of Avon might have

    said.

    VF

Hear hear! Many thanks to Val Foskett for that review! And now, back to the script

ITS CHRIIIISTMAAAAS!We can hear Santa's sleigh in the distance and it's time to ask ourselves again "Have we been naughtyor have we been good?"

Well we've been GREAT this year and so it's time to round the Carlton Calendar off with a really good

    Christmas party.

So just to remind you - the date for grabbing your favourite luvvie under the mistletoe is 13TH

DECEMBER and will be at the Community Centre, in rooms C&D and the fun will start PROMPTLY at

    7.30pm.

We want to make this year's party really special so here's the drill!

    1. In true dramatic style please come in your favourite costume from past Carlton productions, ifnothing springs to mind, the alternative is a themed seasonal costume - at a push a pair of jeans and a bit

of tinsel will do the trick!

    2. You will need to bring copious amounts of alcohol for your own consumption

    3. Between us we need to provide a banquet - a vast array of sumptuous grub. So to ensure we don't all

bring mince pies, here's how it will work. If you surname starts with A through to P please bring a

savoury dish, if your surname starts with Q through to Z please bring pud!

    4. We need to make a little money out of this - so if you could bring along a raffle prize (and some

money!) that would be very much appreciated!.

    5. We'd also like to put on some entertainment - if you'd like to perform please can you let Ruth know

ASAP. Also looking for performers for the PANTO

    6. I'm also looking for volunteers to help organise the event - So were looking for lots of little elfs to

help transform the community centre into Santa's grotto - please please please offer to help.

Anyway, the most important thing of all is to come along and have a really good time, so please make

sure you keep the 13th December free in your diary!

Just a reminder that Two Gentlemen of Verona starts next Monday (13th). Please note that there are no

Saturday performances so the Thursday and Friday will be busier than normal so please book your tickets

    for those performances in advance.

In case you've forgotten we're at the Charles Cryer Theatre in Carshalton. There are direct trains from

Wimbledon (costs 1 return!) and the tickets for this production are only 7.

As always, we really need your support to make this production a success. Adam, Pippa and the cast

have worked incredibly hard over the last few months to create a vibrant, exciting and funny production

and we don't want it to play to a half empty theatre. Please try to bring friends along with you. You know our shows are always professional and highly

entertaining and this one's no different! This show is a colourful extravaganza of classical drama,

contemporary music, dance, all wrapped up in some of the most spectacular costumes seen at the Carlton

    for a while.

So, pick up the phone, get yourself some tickets, and while youre at it, buy your friends some as well!

    Carlton UpdateThe Official Sexed-up Dossier

SUBSThere are still some subs and performance feesoutstanding, so please get your cash in to Carl

Whiteside as soon as possible. Our Finances are

still a bit pale and wan-looking, so pay up and feel

the warm glow of moral superiority.

We can only wait so long before cancelling

peoples subscriptions, and in fact weve had to

cross some people off the membership list!

    NEW WEBSITE LOCATION

Yes, weve bitten the bullet, registered a domainname, bought some hosting space and configured

our nameserver and uploaded our HTML. By

which, as Im sure you know, I mean CDS now has

its own website, free of adverts, pop-ups and non-

    compliant scripting elements.

Of course, this costs money, so any outstanding

subs would be very welcome now!

Simon Harris has been hosting the site on his

own space up till now (Thanks Simon!), and hell

continue to update the new site, with a little help

from yours truly. Surf on over towww.carltondrama.org.uk, where youll find the

new site in all its glory. It looks pretty much like

the old one for now, but its being spruced up, and

you can see some changes already!

If you have any suggestions or requests for the

    website, contact the committee!

NEWSLETTER ADVERTSIf youre a member of the CDS, you can have

your classified ad in the newsletter at the frankly

pathetic cost of 5 for a years worth ofnewsletters.

The newsletter is emailed or posted to all the

members of the group, so you can be sure that your

ad will be regularly seen by at least 70 people!

When the newsletters are put on the web, even

more people will see them! They are edited to

remove personal information, but the ads will be

    left as is.

Contact the Chronicle Editor for more details. If

you havent paid your subs, of course, you wont

be able to take advantage of this fantastic offer!

COMMUNITY CENTRESadly, Wimbledon Community Centre has hadto hike its fees up once more. This time they have

increased them by 25% to 40 per room per night.

But dont worry, this does not mean another subs

increase. The current rate of 40 still stands. See

page 13 for all the fees.

STORAGE UPDATETrips to the garage are now a thing of the past!

The contents of the dank space are now being kept

behind the stage in Wimbledon CommunityCentre. Thanks to Mike Tierney, Aubs Tredget,

Cindy & Jeff Graves, Kate Mitchell, Sarah Hewitt

(& Russell!), Phillipa Cain and Carl Whiteside for

clearing out the garage, taking a load of stuff to the

dump, and taking the rest to the WCC.

It was a surprise to find what goodies were

found in the depths of the garage. If you would like

to know more, contact Cindy Graves, who is your

Committee member with special responsibility for

dusty curiosities. Apart from Jeff, she deals with

props as well!Work is still afoot to sort out the area in the

WCC with shelves, rails and the like.

Mike is keen to lend his practical ability to the

project and the initial focus will be to prepare the

room with extra rails to store the costumes on.

Watch this space, because a date will soon be

set to get the storage space sorted out, and your

    help will be needed.

    APPEAL FROM PIPPA

This editions Probe victim, Pippa Cain, ismissing a motorcycle helmet, gloves and jacket.

They went missing during rehearsals for Two

Gents, where they were a possible costume.

If youve seen them, or have any information,

please contact the committee, as Pippa is very keen

to get this very valuable stuff back.

Clear Win By The Best TeamThere was only one point in it weep losers

Jeff Graves sobbed as he eyed the Carlton Quiz trophy with mournful eyes.

For the few of you who did not attend the Grand Carlton Quiz and Bingo night on the 20th November,

the event, which raised over 130, was a roaring success, attracting almost 90% of the membership, most

    of whom were drunk.

The quiz rounds included the picture round, starring some of the Carlton's most luminous stars, cinema

news, a fiendish Shakespearian quotation round and a sports round so difficult that grown men (not Jeff

    this time) wept.

The sight of Carl's revolving Bingo Balls will not easily be forgotten by those of us who stood in awe

    and wonder at the sight.

With thanks to all of the members who donated food, bingo and raffle prizes, the fantabulous

'Quizmeisters':- John 'Sport Trivia King' Gargrave , Lucie 'Hot Gossip' Morris, Carl 'Red Shoes'

Whiteside, Ian 'Music Man' Ward, Matt 'Film Fun' Petty, and Val 'Quotation Queen' Foskett and of coursethe Lovely Ruth for bringing a touch of glamour and class to the proceedings. (not to mention quiz prizes,

    nibbles and sanity!)

And one last message to all those who did not win the coveted Trophy (finally won by Matt and

Mairi's team) - Work hard, study well my children, for the Quiz will return, and your turn will come!

The trophy was won by the

To drink up, be merry, and off we went,

The pub was a blast, the fireworks even more so

And the curry went down with a gallon of gusto.

The fireworks were loud, but the Carlton were louder!

    KM

Witness StatementWell, officer, it was like this.

The evening started with a booking for 12 Carltonites at Mordens finest (indeed only) Chinese karaoke

emporium. As the evening progressed, 18 members joined the revelry, and soon the restaurant was

bursting at the seams. As we gorged on the very cheap, but tasty, food, and sang along to 'It's raining

men', we did not pay attention to the two tables of very drunk teenagers, beyond sighing for our lost

youth, waistlines, and ability to get hoo-hooed on one glass of cheap lager. That was our mistake - we

shall pass a veil over the events of that evening, but suffice it to say that it was a very exciting Carlton

evening, and to new members, please note that all Carlton outings do not end with the police being called!

GET YOUR DIARIES OUTPlease take a look at the Carlton Calendar (on page 13), its time to jot down the whats on.

After the final performance of Two Gents (see

page 4), and the costumes are all packed away (but

where? See page 4 again), there will be a period of

well earned rest for the cast and crew before the

next show gets under way. But that doesnt mean

the rest of us have to sit around!

October havebeen set aside for play readings, script tryouts,

anything. The rooms are booked, so come down

and make use of them! It would be a good idea to

thrash out some ideas for the Annual Carlton

Workshops, set for Thursday 26 & Friday 27

February 2004. The sooner you can get a short

script and a cast together, the better!

Then, on Monday 27 and Thursday 30 October

its time to start thinking about what items youd

like to put forward for the Charity Gala Night,

pencilled in for March 2004. This is going to be amusical evening above all, so bring a song in your

heart, as well as on paper. Then everyone can join

in, and bring the roof down!

You also need to get your thinking caps on for

next years major productions too. In a change to

previous practice, this year the Committee would

like to hear from prospective directors about shows

they would like to put forward for selection for the

    whole of 2004.

Although venues and times are not yet fixed, we

are aiming to put shows on at the following times:

    End of May 2004

    End of July 2004

Start of December 2004The selection presentations will take place on

Sunday 30th November, at Lucies Wimbledon

pomme de terre. For details, contact the committee.

As well as all this, your gorgeous & fully

equipped Social & Fundraising Team, Ruth &Kate, have been hard at it as well. Not content with

raising hundreds of pounds this year already, they

have a number of events lined up.

A Carlton pub/fireworks display outing is on

the cards, so watch this space!

Another trip to the ever-popular Karaoke

Chinese Restaurant in Morden. A good

chance to exercise your vocal cords for theGala Night! This is on Friday 31st October.

A super-fun Bingo & Quiz evening is set

    for Thursday 20th November.

And if all that wasnt enough, on 13th December

is the always-fantastic Carlton Christmas Party. Its

a custom that we put on a short panto at the party,

so if youd like to be involved with that, get in

touch with Ruth, and shell fill you in.

So there you go, a busy few weeks ahead. For

more up to date information, check your emailsregularly, and keep an eye on the NEW website at

    Pippa Cain

Adam & Pippa Cain have been a

mainstay of the Carlton for many

years. They didnt start as a couple,

oh no. They are a classic example of

the Carlton Effect. Here, the lovely

    Pippa reveals all.*

Hello, how are you? Did you enjoy Raw! Theatre?Yes - eventually!

How long have you been a Carlton member?Erm, 13 years? 14 years!

Were you in theatre before the Carlton?Yes. I was in Youth Theatre since I was 10, then I did it as my main subject in teacher training, during which I played

the Wicked Witch of the West 2 years running! At college I took a couple of productions to Edinburgh.

What Carlton productions have you been involved in?Not as many as you'd think!

I was in Chorus of Disapproval the first time around (1991?) as Bridget, Ive done the workshops most years, actingand directing (and sometimes singing!), I was a courtier in Amadeus, in Twelfth Night as Feste, and in Orestes as

    Elektra.

In addition I directed The Tempest, A Midsummer Nights Dream (in August), and more recently, Two Gentlemen Of

    Verona.

Ive also designed many graphics for the Carlton posters, flyers, programmes, characters in the programmes!

Which was your favourite? The finished product of Two Gents was my favourite show, but it had a troubled birth, with the venue moving and all.

Dream was the most fun rehearsing.

What was your most embarrassing theatre moment? At Primary school I played the Roman commander in a re-enactment of a battle which the Romans were supposed to

lose. Under my command they won, and I was told off in front of the Headmaster for changing the course of history.

Also, in Chorus (91) I had to hit a man, but I hit him in the groin area by accident, and he was out for the count and

    had to be carried off!

Are you rehearsing at the moment? What for?Im rehearsing for living in Stroud it takes a lot of rehearsal (and packing)

Do you have any tips you've picked up about acting or directing?Directing - delegate everything you can, and challenge your actors through casting - give them something new to do.

Acting - don't be afraid of pausing, silence can speak volumes.

What are you wearing right now?Black.

What do you do for a living?Child-rearing.

What's your tipple?Drop of ruby port of an evening.

Whats the last film you saw?Disneys Brother Bear with the kids.

First album you ever bought?Queen the one with Killer Queen on it (answers on a postcard please)

Who would you want to play you in the film of your life story? The woman off of daytime TVs Judging Amy.

Describe yourself in 3 words.Strange Unique Species

If you had to compare yourself to a cartoon character, which one would it be?Tiny Clanger the one with the ideas.

Do you have any dreams, hopes, aspirations?

To make money from my art & to clean up after our children. If you have any nominations for someone to be subjected to The Probe, let the editor know at the usual address. One

person will be chosen at random from the nominations. Those not chosen will be carried over.

Cindy and Jeff had no choice in moving to the house
