Tuft Bench

Carlo UrmySpring 2013Personal project

maple, cherry, steel

An early 3D modeling project, and my first project CNC machining “soft” textures in wood. The bench was shown as part of “The Making Of...” series at SFMOMA, May 2013.

Tuft Stools

Carlo UrmySummer 2013Personal project

maple, cherry, steel

Intended as part of a small furniture line along with the Tuft Bench, these were my second project using CNC machining to create upholstered forms in wood. The two stools were built in sequence to allow for im-provements to the fabrication pro-cess while maintaining the same essential design.

Coffee Table

Carlo UrmySummer 2010Personal project

maple, walnut

My first project using traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, created as part of a workshop taught by John Dunnigan at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle, Maine.

Karesansui Tile Prototype

Carlo UrmyFall 2013Personal project

cast concrete

Inspired by Japanese rock gardens, I created a set of two tiles that can be used to create complex textures and directional systems, while providing traction and drainage for water. This piece reflects an ongoing interest in using CNC machines in conjunction with cast media.

Bad Map

Carlo UrmyFall 2013Personal project

polyester resin, dyed walnut, paper.

Based on census data, I created a topography mapping median income across San Francisco. Using a CNC machined positive, I cast the topogra-phy in clear polyester resin to create a refracting “lens” that presents data while simultaneously impeding its own interpretation. Instead of prom-ising immediate comprehension, the map demands careful, deliberate reading using both sight and touch.

Pterodactyl

Carlo UrmyFall 2012Personal project

plywood, aluminum, cardboard, foam, canvas.

Competition entry in the Red Bull Flugtag competition. Teams were asked to design and build human- powered gliders to be launched off of a pier into the San Francisco Bay, with scoring based on distance traveled and creativity of design. The glider was designed and fabricat-ed collectively by myself, Joe Tocci, Conor Landenberger, Ryan Spurlock, and Laura Stevenson, and was spon-sored by TechShop San Francisco and Autodesk.
