Looking back, I’m not sure I can pinpoint a specifi c mo-ment when I became addicted to GM muscle, or more

specifi cally, Chevrolets of the 1960s and 1970s. My family was strictly Bowtie-oriented, so as far as I was concerned, there were really no other cars to lust after. I was, like any number of you, simply born into it, and while other kids hung pictures of Lamborghinis on their walls, I secretly thought a fi rst-gen Camaro SS would be way better.

But if I had to pick one moment, it would have to be watching my fi rst engine fi re up for the fi rst time. I was 17 and it was a 468-ci big-block Chevy. I remember watching it breathe fi re out a set of zoomie pipes as the machine shop broke in the camshaft. For me, it was what dreams were made of — the new heart of a triple-black ’66 Ca-price hard top, and the fi nal piece of a three-year puzzle.

If you’re here at the GM Nationals, I suspect you get it. And you’ve come to the right place. No other manufac-turer off ered more avenues into performance and style than General Motors, starting with the iconic ’55–’57 Chevys, ’59 Cadillacs and ’63 Split-Window Corvettes. The ’64 GTO started the era of the muscle car, and the ’70 Chevelle SS 454 LS6 perfected it, along with the Buick GSX and 442. 1969 L88 Corvettes went 200 mph at Le Mans, while C10 pickups worked on the farms of Ameri-ca. All of these cars came from the same parent compa-ny, and this weekend is a celebration of all of them, and more, as well as the people who continue to love them.

If you’re as crazy about Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Cadil-lacs, Pontiacs, GMCs and Chevrolets as I am, you should check out American Car Collector magazine. Each issue features in-depth market reports and profi les of cars that have recently sold at auction. It’s the best way to keep track of the market for cars like yours, or cars like the ones you’re still hunting down. Look for the special introduc-tory off er card in this directory. And above all, have fun this weekend!

— Jim Pickering, Editor, American Car Collector

Welcome to the 12th Annual Carlisle GM Nationals — home to all things General Motors. We welcome

the return of Camaros at Carlisle and clubs such as the American Camaro Association, the Greater Northeast Im-pala SS Club (GNISSC) and many others to the National Parts Depot (NPD) Showfi eld. Stop by the GNISSC to sup-port the Hendrick Bone Marrow Program charity.

We’re featuring the “W” (348 and 409) motor cars that were produced between 1958 and 1964. These big cars were fi lled to the brim with an awesome en-gine combination leading to the next generation of engines referred to as big blocks. Some were “light-weights” and ruled the roost in NASCAR and NHRA. Be sure to check out the awesome display in Building Y, courtesy of our good friend Don Fezell. Be sure to reg-ister in the Guest Services Building to win the 409 cid / 425 hp engine we’re giving away Saturday afternoon.

The Solid Lifter Showroom IV continues to wow folks with a display of some of the fi nest supercars on the planet. Our special thanks goes out to Brian Hen-derson and Joe Arone of the Super Car Workshop and Arone Auto Restoration, as they have prepared and fi nished these vehicles with unmistakable attention to detail!

Bruce Larson returns with Cacklefest under the Per-formance Point tent, and they are sure to thrill more fans than last year. Watch our pre-event contest win-ners get the thrill of a lifetime by sitting in the seat of a Top Fuel monster while the engine is fi red. Then bring the kids to the Off -Road Playground at the top of the hill to catch a ride in another awesome machine — the Shell-Camino monster truck. Everyone is welcome on this fee-based ride.

Check the schedule for a list of all the activities and the map in the centerfold to fi nd your way around. After the event, we encourage you to complete our event survey to help us continue to improve your Car-lisle experience. Thanks for joining us!

FRIDAY SCHEDULE & HIGHLIGHTS

AUTOCROSS RIDE-ALONG ••••••••••••••••••••Strap yourself into one of

the vehicles modifi ed with Hotchkis Sport Suspension components and take a ride like you never thought possible in an old muscle car. Did you notice we used the word “vehicle” rather than “car”? That’s because Hotchkis is bringing a C-10 truck for rides, too! You can have all of this fun at no additional charge!

And, check this out: Hotchkis will award one lucky

owner of a 5th Gen Camaro a TVS system.

MONSTER TRUCK RIDES •••••••••••••••••••••• New for 2012, the Shell-Camino crew are provid-

ing monster truck rides. The truck itself has a retro-fi tted bed to host passengers and is a 1972 Chevy El Camino. The truck will give rides that include car-crushing —something that can only be experienced at Carlisle. Rides cost $5 per person and take place rain or shine.

SEMINAR: NEW GM PERFORMANCE FOR 2012–13 •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

This is a chance to get the in-depth information on the new GM performance vehicles and the changes that are coming to dealership showrooms. From the Regal Turbo GS to Corvette to trucks to Cadillac V se-

ries, this is the place to hear all the in depth info your mind can absorb! Our GM World Class Certifi ed Techni-cian Paul Koerner will give you every piece of info you can ask for and MORE!

CACKLEFEST •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Prior to the event, registration was open for Cack-

lefest. Cacklefest is sitting behind the wheel and warm-ing up one of Bruce Larson’s drag cars — his USA-1 Cama-ro and Corvette. Just listen for the engines and catch the smell of nitro.

ELECTRIC DRAG CAR ••••••••••••••••••••••••• Electric Drag Racing has increased in popularity in

the past fi ve years. Ron Ad-amowicz has his fast, electric drag car here this weekend. How fast? He ran a 1/4-mile in 10.08 seconds at 127.75 mph in 2011. Since then, the team tweaked the car with a lighter 2012 Camaro body, more powerful controllers and lighter battery pack, and they are hoping for a run in the 7-second range on a 1/4-mile strip. See this car in the Race Display by Gate 2 and then check out what Team Haiyin can do on an 1/8-mile at Quarter Aces Drag-O-Way Friday.

CLUB CHALLENGE

CLUB CHALLENGE •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••FIRST • CAPITAL CITY GTOwww.CCGTO.com

63 Registrations

Vehicles: GTO, All Years

We started with just three members in 2005 and grew to more than 100 by 2010. Our members are from all around the nation’s capital — West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., Delaware and Pennsylvania. Our fi rst time to Carlisle as a club was in 2007. In 2008 we took third place; in 2009 we took fi rst place and returned in 2010 to take fi rst again. We hope to continue with a strong presence at Carlisle in the future.

THIRD • MID ATLANTIC FIERO OWNERS ASSOCIATIONwww.mafoa.com

46 Registrations

Vehicles: Fiero, All Years

MAFOA was founded on December 11, 1994, in Gaithersburg, MD. A group of Fiero owners from Penn-sylvania, Maryland and Virginia formed the club and became the founding charter members. The member-ship has grown into the hundreds across the east coast region. Carlisle has been the home to one of MAFOA’s annual car shows since 1996. This particular show is one of the biggest-attended Fiero shows in the U.S. each year. With this kind of history, MAFOA strives to increase club participation each year to put on a great show to keep the “mid-engine madness alive.”

COOLEST CLUB HANGOUT ••••••••••••••During the show, our event team visits

each club location and presents an award to the club with the coolest hangout. We also present awards to the three clubs with the most registered members. Make Carlisle your club’s site for a fun-fi lled weekend.

SECOND • GREATER NORTHEAST IMPALA SS CLUBwww.beasst.org and www.possiweb.com

52 Registrations

Vehicles: 1991–96 GM B-Body (Caprice,

Impala SS, Roadmaster, Deville, Sedans &

Wagons)

In January 2001, local GM “B-body” club members from Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania brought their late model Impalas and Caprices to Carlisle’s brand-new event, the GM Nationals. Since the members were from diff erent clubs, they created a new club so ev-eryone could register together, and the Greater Northeast Impala SS Clubs (GNISSC) was born.

In 2002 they were awarded fi rst place in the Club Challenge with 45 cars. In 2003, they set their all-time high of 62 cars. From 2003–08 GNISSC won the Club Challenge. In 2009 they placed third, and they took second place in 2010.

GNISSC has supported charitable causes through car shows, cruise nights and drag rac-ing events including the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Make-a-Wish Foundation and the benefactors of the Chester County Cruisers,

Chesterbrook, PA. During the past three years, GNISSC has focused its charitable eff orts to-wards the “Be The Match Foundation” Leukemia fund, which was established through Rick Hen-drick of Hendrick Motorsports (HMS). The club has worked with HMS personnel to raffl e au-thentic NASCAR components and autographed merchandise during the GM Nationals to raise donations. The HMS organization has also sup-ported Carlisle by exhibiting Mr. Hendrick’s per-sonal car collection in the Invitational Display.

We are a family of “Car People” who thrive on fun and friendship. Carlisle has been a big part of watching our family grow and for that, we are fortunate and thankful.

FUN FACTS

SMILE! YOU MAY BE ON CAMERAWhen entering the Carlisle Fairgrounds or Carlisle

Expo Center, you might notice that fi lming and photog-raphy are going on. By attending any Carlisle Produc-tions event, there is implied consent, and you agree to give Carlisle Productions and authorized fi lming and/or production companies and/or media outlets the right to fi lm, photograph, record your name, nickname, picture, biographical material, voice and/or likeness and to use in any manner of media in connection with the event or future events and the advertising and promotion thereof.

The same holds true for any vehicle, product or any other item you display or bring to the event. You also agree to the broadcast, production, reproduction, print-ing, distribution and exhibition of any such photographs and/or recordings of the event, and any programming derived from the event, by any and all means, media, devices, processes and technology now or hereafter known or devised anywhere in the universe at any time in perpetuity as Carlisle Productions or any of these authorized producers, fi lmers, photographers and/or media outlets elect without compensation of any kind to you.

With ten events and over a half million people coming through our gates each year, the staff

works diligently to assure a positive experience and to make this one of the cleanest venues of its type in the

country. If you’ve ever wondered what it takes to pre-pare and run our events, enjoy our quirky “Fun Facts” in each event directory. We hope you enjoy Fun Facts 1-5 below.

FACT 5: We use a lot of temporary fencing to stage events, from the swap meet and car corral areas, to autocross, Monster Trucks and on the showfi eld itself, the fencing end to end covers approximately 10 miles. In doing so, the maintenance staff ham-mers in at least 3,520 fence posts – possibly more. From Carlisle, 10 miles isn’t far, but it’s far enough to get from one side of the Carlisle Borough to another (and back). You could also drive to Mechanicsburg, walk the Appalachian Trail from Whiskey Springs Rd. to Boiling Springs or run 40 laps around your local high school track.

FACT 4: It is estimated that over the course of a sea-son 1,832,220 feet of toilet paper is used. With 5,280 feet in a mile, this translates to just over 347 miles worth of tushy tissue. By standing on grounds at Carlisle, you can travel to the following locations by rolling out a season’s worth of TP: Boston, Detroit, and Winston-Salem.

FACT 3: Paper towels. An estimated 595,000 feet of paper towels are used during an event season. That equates to nearly 113 miles! That is greater than the driving distance from Carlisle to Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, York and even across the state line down to Annapolis, Maryland.

FACT 2: To fi ll those nearly 600 blue trash barrels, more than 39,500 – 50 gallon trash bags are used. That means at least 1,975,000 gallons of trash get moved from point A to B between April and Octo-ber.

FACT 1: Over the course of a season, more than 311 tons - 622,000 pounds of trash is extracted from the hundreds of blue trash barrels. This total does not include batteries, liquids, tires and metal.

Next up is how much yellow caution tape is un-furled over the course of the year. It’s surprisingly less than the amount of fencing we use.
