Carleton College Alumni Adventures presents:
Odyssey of Wonders:Ancient & Modern EgyptWith Rob & Teresa Oden
March 10-21, 2012
Explore the forces of time that have shaped a fascinating
nation from its ancient history through its contemporary
struggles for cultural and political clarity. In early 2011,
the world watched, transfixed, as Egypt’s citizens engaged in
a peaceful revolution that brought down the autocratic and
corrupt Mubarak government and led to the ongoing process of
establishing a peaceful democracy, a new constitution, and free
and fair elections. Now, stability has returned to the streets and
Egypt’s people have embarked on this new era of freedom and
self-government. We invite you on an amazing trip to an age-old
and ever-fascinating destination.
Egypt is safe and welcoming, and Rob and Teresa Oden are eager
for you to join them for a trip designed for intrepid minds and
curious souls. You will bask in views of the pyramids and other
ancient monuments, experience modern Cairo, and taste ancient
and modern life along the Nile during a week-long cruise on the
SS MISR, a ship with modern comforts and early-20th-century
regal ambience. You will also talk with Rob’s on-the-ground
colleagues in-country, and learn from Rob himself in daily
lectures and ongoing conversations about Egyptian history and
influences. This unique trip explores the cultural, historical and
intellectual heart of Egypt.
Trip LeadersRobert A. Oden Jr. was the president of
Carleton College from 2002-2010, president of
Kenyon College from 1995 to 2002 and
headmaster of the Hotchkiss School from 1989
to 1995. President Oden holds a BA from
Harvard College and advanced degrees from
the Harvard Divinity School and from the University of Cambridge, where he was a Marshall
scholar. He earned a PhD in Near Eastern languages and literature from Harvard University. He
was a professor in the Department of Religion at Dartmouth College, where he received
Dartmouth’s first Distinguished Teaching Award. During his tenure at Dartmouth, he twice
served as the academic director and lecturer on a Dartmouth Alumni Seminar Abroad: “Egypt,
the Red Sea, and Jordan.” He has been on the Board of Trustees of the American University in
Cairo since 1990. He and Teresa led a Carleton trip to Egypt in 2008.
Oden is the author of five books, including The Bible Without Theology, and scores of scholarly
articles, as well as a number of articles on fly-fishing. His chief research interests are in ancient
Near East languages and history and comparative religion. In 1989 he was selected to be
among the first of the Teaching Company’s “Superstar Teachers,” recording several series of
lectures on comparative religion and the Old Testament
Teresa Oden earned a BA in classics from Brandeis University. She has worked as a computer
programmer and as an administrator in the nonprofit sector and has published articles and
a book about issues facing the partners of academic leaders. Passionate about local history,
she wrote about college history for the Kenyon College Alumni Bulletin and, after moving to
Minnesota, she wrote a history play in honor of Northfield’s sesquicentennial in 2005. A resident
of Hanover, NH since 2010, she has now shifted her research and writing to that town’s history.
Teresa enjoys gardening and “just about anything that requires handling beautiful fabrics.”
Robin Weber Pollak, Carleton Class of 2004 and director of JOURNEYS International, will also
accompany the trip. Robin worked for five years in experiential education and received an
MBA from The George Washington University before returning to JOURNEYS, a family business
that has offered worldwide nature and culture adventures since 1978.
ItineraryDay 1 • Saturday, March 10ARRIVE CAIRO (depart U.S. on Friday, March 9)
Upon arrival at the Cairo International Airport, you will be met and
transferred to the Cairo Marriott Hotel to check in, relax, and freshen
up. In the evening, enjoy a welcome reception with your group and tour
leaders, followed by dinner in the hotel. (D)
Day 2 • Sunday, March 11Pyramids, Memphis, SaqqaraAfter breakfast, begin your exploration of Ancient Egypt with a trip back
through the history of Egypt’s Pharaonic Old Kingdom. Drive to the Giza
Plateau, where you will see the pyramids and the enigmatic Sphinx,
and visit the Solar Boat Museum. Visit Memphis, the once resplendent
capital of the Old Kingdom where you will see the reclining statue of
Ramses II. Enjoy the countryside and riverbank sights along the short
drive from Memphis to Saqqara, Egypt’s largest archaeological site, and
the burial place of the pharaohs of the Old Kingdom. Here, your guide
will take you to the Step Pyramid of Zoser, the world’s oldest stone
monument, built around 2660 BC, where ongoing archaeological work
continues to this day. Tour other burial chambers in the complex,
marveling at the well-preserved wall murals and paintings, then return
to your Cairo hotel for the evening. (B, L, D)
Day 3 • Monday, March 12American University of Cairo, Luxor, Board the SS MISRSpend this morning at the American University of Cairo, where Rob
Oden is arranging a private tour and a chance to hear from a pre-
eminent expert on Egypt past and present (details to be announced
as the trip approaches). After lunch, transfer to the Cairo Airport for
the short flight to Luxor, where you will meet your Nile River ship. The
SS MISR will be your home for the next week. We set sail southward to
Esna before the sun sets and enjoy the riverbank sights during our first
evening aboard. (B, L, D)
Day 4 • Tuesday, March 13Esna / Edfu and Aswan (SS MISR)
Begin the morning sailing through Esna Lock before reaching Edfu and
visiting its temple, dedicated to the god Horus. The Ptolemaic Temple
of Horus, the falcon god, is the largest and most completely preserved
temple in Egypt, rich with hieroglyphs and other imagery, so be
prepared for an informative morning with your guide. Learn about the
significance of the temple’s many well-preserved reliefs and the valu-
able information they have provided to archaeologists about temple
rituals and the power of the priesthood of ancient Egypt. Enjoy lunch
aboard the ship while sailing to Aswan, where the Nile narrows at the
rocky First Cataract, an old strategic site on ancient routes to the Sudan
and Nubia. Arrive in Aswan by evening, where you will dock overnight
and rest up for a full day of exploring tomorrow. (B, L, D)
Day 5 • Wednesday, March 14Aswan (SS MISR)
Aswan will be our base for today’s explorations, starting early in the
morning, when we travel by small boat to Philae Island to absorb
the romantic aura and grandeur of the complex of the Temple of Isis,
goddess mother of nature and protector of man, and one of Egypt’s
most legendary tourist attractions. The ruins on the island date back
from about 400 BC through the next 500 years and are extensive,
varied, and starkly beautiful. The massive stone temple complex was
disassembled, moved to, and painstakingly reconstructed on this island,
stone by stone, by UNESCO between 1972 and 1980 to save it from the
rising waters of the Aswan High Dam. Next, visit the Unfinished Obelisk,
remarkable for its huge size and, at 2.3 million tons of granite, the heavi-
est single piece of stone the Egyptians had ever fashioned. Also visit
the massive Aswan High Dam, with its views over the sparkling deep
green-blue waters of Lake Nasser, the world’s largest man-made lake.
The High Dam is a massive structure that supposedly contains about 18
times the amount of material used in the great pyramid of Khufu in Giza
(which contains more than two million limestone blocks weighing 2.5
tons apiece!).
Day 7 • Friday, March 16Kom Ombo to Luxor via Esna and Edfu (SS MISR)
After breakfast, set sail on a leisurely trip down the Nile, continuing
north toward Luxor, watching the sights along the way, and descend-
ing the Nile River locks at Esna, not far north of Edfu. Keep an eye out
for the Ptolemaic-Roman Temple of Khnum, the ram-headed god who
created mankind, near the boat landing in Esna. Arrive at Luxor late in
the day and enjoy dinner onboard the ship. (B, L, D)
Day 8 • Saturday, March 17Luxor (SS MISR)
Rise before dawn for breakfast followed by a quick boat ride across the
river to Luxor’s West Bank for a fascinating exploration of the Valley
of the Kings and Queens. Your visit will include excursions inside the
amazingly well-preserved tombs of several rulers of old Egyptian dynas-
ties. Visit the Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, one of Egypt’s
most successful pharaohs as well as the longest-reigning female,
and the Colossi of Memnon, a tourist attraction since Greco-Roman
times and the only remaining components of the Mortuary Temple of
Amenophis III. Return to Luxor’s East Bank and your ship for lunch. In
the afternoon, tour the strikingly-graceful Luxor Temple in the heart
of town and the temples in the massive two-square-kilometer Karnak
complex, whose ancient name means “the most perfect of places.” Have
dinner onboard, then consider an evening outing – perhaps tonight is
the night to try a traditional sheesha (water pipe)? Return to your ship
for the night. (B, L, D)
Day 9 • Sunday, March 18Qena, Dendara, and Luxor (SS MISR)
During breakfast we will sail about 35 miles north to the provincial town
of Qena and the nearby spectacular ruins of Dendara. The Temple of
Hathor at Dendara remains almost completely intact and is therefore
an iconic Egyptian sight. Although this site had been a religious center
since about 2320 BC and the goddess Hathor had been worshipped
here since the days of the Old Kingdom, the current great temple was
largely built by the Ptolemies with later work done by Romans. The
great columns, dark crypts, stairwells, and carved hieroglyphs all add
to the atmosphere. There are even remains of a small 5th century AD
Coptic basilica at the site. Return to Luxor, enjoy your last night in
town moored on your riverboat, and consider one last outing to enjoy
the ancient capital of Thebes, perhaps the world’s greatest open-air
museum. (B, L, D)
In the afternoon take a guided river cruise on a small Nubian-captained
sailing boat (felucca), passing by the Agha Khan Mausoleum, Elephan-
tine Island, and the Botanical Island of Lord Kitchener. Later, you will
have free time to explore Aswan’s lively souq and riverfront, or perhaps
take a taxi to the atmospheric Old Cataract Hotel, where Agatha Christie
wrote Death on the Nile, for coffee. After dinner on board the ship, the
evening is yours at leisure. (B, L, D)
Day 6 • Thursday, March 15Aswan to Kom Ombo (SS MISR)
Set sail for a relaxing trip to Kom Ombo, enjoying lovely views of river
activities and shoreline towns from one of the ship’s open-air sun
decks as you leave Aswan and head down the Nile for Kom Ombo.
Time permitting, we may be able to visit the huge cattle market held
on the outskirts of town on Thursdays. The main attraction, though, is
the riverside temple of Kom Ombo, unique in Egypt for its dual dedica-
tion to the crocodile god, Sobek, and the falcon god, Horus. Visit in the
afternoon when the light is perfect and crowds have thinned. Admire
the location, all the hieroglyphs and colors that still remain, and the
temple’s rugged beauty. Enjoy dinner onboard the ship near Kom
Ombo, where you will moor for the night. (B, L, D)
Day 10 • Monday, March 19Return to CairoAfter breakfast, disembark the riverboat and transfer to nearby Luxor
Airport for your flight to Cairo, where you will be met on arrival and
transferred to the Cairo Marriott Hotel for check-in. We are also work-
ing on setting up a visit today with one or more of Rob Oden’s Cairo
contacts (details to follow when arrangements are complete). Dinner
and overnight at the hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 11 • Tuesday, March 20Old Cairo, mosques, markets, and farewellImmerse yourself in the exploration of Cairo, the heartbeat of Egypt,
also known as the “Mother of the World.” This city has a rich history,
having been part of the Persian, Ptolemaic, Roman, and Byzantine
empires and home to Christians, Jews, and Muslims alike. Following
breakfast at the hotel, embark on a guided exploration of old Cairo.
Begin with a visit to Islamic Cairo and the panoramic hilltop Citadel of
Saladin which also houses Muhammad Ali Pasha’s 19th century alabas-
ter mosque. Walk the cobblestone streets of Old Cairo, the oldest quar-
ter of the city, with its ancient churches and the synagogue of Ben Ezra.
Visit Khan al-Khalili souq (market), including Fishawi’s Coffeehouse. See
Tahrir Square, the site of the January 2011 protests that tipped the politi-
cal forces of the nation. After lunch, continue your exploration at the
Egyptian Museum of Antiquities. One of the most impressive exhibits of
many here are the antiquities from Tutankhamen’s tomb with its nested
burial containers, golden inner sarcophagus, and assorted funerary
treasures. Visit the Royal Mummy Room, home to the bodies of Ramses
II, Seti I, and Tuthmosis II. Tonight, for your last night in Egypt as a
group, enjoy a unique farewell dinner. (B, L, D)
Day 12 • Wednesday, March 21Depart for homeAfter breakfast at the hotel, meet your representative and transfer to the
airport for your journey homeward or on to your next destination. (B)
