The new Canada Child Benefit (CCB) will be
right on time to ensure that families across
Canada can enjoy summer with their loved
ones.
CCB is the most significant social policy
innovation in a generation. It will provide
families more money to help with the high
cost of raising their children.
Our government is committed to play a
leading role in supporting poverty reduction
in future years.
Samantha is a single parent with one child,
named Julia and aged 3. She earned $30,000
in 2015. This summer, she will receive $533,
for an annual total of $6,400 in tax-free CCB
payments.
Aveen and Sarita have two children, Olivia
aged 8, and Zoe aged 5. Aveen earned
$30,000 and Sarita earned $60,000 in 2015.
This summer, they will get $470 for an
annual total of $5,650 in tax-free payments.

Summer In Delta
Heartfelt thanks to Mayor Lois Jackson,
Fire Chief Dan Copeland and Police Chief
Neil Dubord for their excellent response to
the July 3 fire in Burn’s Bog. The 78 hec-
tare fire was contained with the assistance
of over 90 firefighters & several air tankers,
with support from Surrey, New Westminster
and Richmond, along with the BC Wildlife
Service and Metro Vancouver. The Emer-
gency Operations Centre quickly mobilized
to assess the situation, and acted quickly to
ensure Burn’s Bog, Tilbury businesses and
the public were kept safe.
It’s summer, and I’m so happy to be home in
our vibrant community. As the Minister of
Sport and Persons with Disabilities, health
and recreation is always top of mind, and Del-
ta offers many activities to enjoy all summer
long. Whether walking along the beach in
Boundary Bay, playing baseball in Annieville,
or kayaking along Ladner Reach, our commu-
nity offers us the best summer has to offer.
I’ve had an active spring, attending Ladner
Pioneer days, and North Delta Family days;
I’ve thrown the first pitch to open the North
Delta Baseball Association season, and I tried
Lawn Bowling on Canada Day. The Tour de
Delta was exciting, as was Boundary Bay Air
Show. I’m looking forward to the outdoor con-
cert series, as well as Starry Nights at Deas
Island. Whatever your fitness level, the op-
tions will no doubt entice residents to be ac-
tive and connect. I will be heading to Rio to
support our Canadian athletes at the Olympic
Games and Paralympic Games, and am proud
to share that four of Delta’s own athletes will
compete for Canada. We’re so very fortunate
to have beaches and forests, urban business-
es and rural farms, festivals and farmers mar-
kets, all in our own back yard. I encourage all
of you to get outside this summer and explore
our community.

CRA Scam Alert There have been an increasing number
of fraudulent calls from individuals
pretending to be calling from the Canada
Revenue Agency. Often it is a recorded
message that you owe money, and
immediate action is required. The
Canadian Anti Fraud Center recommends
the following steps to protect yourself:
Do not take immediate action. Verify
that what you are being told is the
truth
Ask yourself why the CRA would be
asking for personal information over
the phone or email that they likely
already have on file
Contact the CRA to confirm that you
owe back taxes, or are entitled to a
refund, and contact the Canadian
Anti Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501
The Ladner Pioneer Days, North Delta Family
Days and Tsawwassen Sun Festival were
three fun packed parades this spring.
Whether riding in the back of a pick up truck
in Ladner, walking the route in North Delta, or
riding in the back of a convertible, in
Tsawwassen, it was wonderful to celebrate
our community. Thanks goes out to the North
Delta Lions Club, the Tsawwassen Rotary
Club, and to the organizers and volunteers of
the Ladner Pioneer Days.

Canadian pride was on full display in every
corner of Delta July 1. Whether in Ladner,
Tsawwassen or North Delta, it’s clear that
our community enjoyed coming together to
celebrate Canada’s birthday.
Higlights from the fantastic day included an
early morning lesson at the North Delta
Lawn Bowling Club; Canada Day cake at
Deifenbaker park; a visit to Kirkland house
for Canada Day celebrations; Emma Lea
farms on Westham Island, and then on to
the Riverhouse Restaurant for a radio
interview with Delta’s Steve Erikson of
Sportswave Radio. We then headed to
Chalmers Park for music and entertainment.
My evening continued with dinner and
evening prayers at the Batur Rahmen
Mosque on River Road, and the singing of
O Canada by a local children’s choir. The
evening drew to a close back at Chalmers
Park to watch a spectacular fireworks show.
On Canada Day we see that Delta is truly a
beautiful mix of urban and rural areas,
diverse cultures and ethnicities. We share
pride in our community, our many

volunteer organizations and simply yet

Canadian. Whether you’re a multi-
generational Delta family, or a new resident
to Canada, I am proud that our community
can come together to celebrate Canada’s
149th birthday.
The Federal Government has delivered on
its promise to double number of jobs
funded by the Canada Summer Jobs
program. This funding means 178 jobs for
Delta students, assisting 54 local employers.
Double the Funding
The Federal Government as committed over
$537 000 in Delta to not- for- profit, public-
sector employees and small businesses with
fewer than 50 employees, to create business
opportunities for young people aged 15-30
year’s old, who are full time students that
are intending to return to their studies in
the next school year. Funding from this
program will help young Canadians gain
experience and a foothold in the workforce.
Local Priorities
Applications were assessed based on the
following priorities:
Service to local communities
Jobs that support local priorities
Jobs that provide career related
experience or early work experience
Employers that provide supervision and
mentoring
Project activities that support the vitality
of an official language minority
community
Employers that intend to hire priority
students (students with disabilities,
Indigenous students, and students that
are visible minorities.)
Businesses like Star Diamond Tools in
Tilbury benefited from the increased
funding. Owner John Bernat was able to
hire university student Ève Grébert
for the summer, before Ève returns to her
studies in the fall. Both Ève and John live
and work in Delta. John has been in
business for 22 years, and has 6 full time
employees; this is the first time he’s used
the Canada Summer Jobs program. John
shared that hiring a student not only eased
the workload of his business, but he is
pleased that he can offer real work
experience to a local student. On Ève’s part,
she’s found that working in her community
has had many benefits, including the ease
of commuting, as she can bike to the office.
She is grateful for the opportunity to be
working outside of the typical fields of most
summer jobs where she can learn practical
office skills.

Look Who’s Visiting Ottawa
Crossroads United Church
Community Dinner
My staff and I had the pleasure of
breaking bread in community at
Crossroads United Church on June 25th.
Rev. Cari Copeman–Haynes shared that
on the fourth Saturday of each month, her
congregations offers “a free, nutritious
meal and God’s hospitality over a shared
table in a safe setting. “ Guests enjoy a
salad, main course and dessert, prepared
by kind and friendly volunteers. Whether
it is for a healthy meal, fellowship, or to
feel a sense of belonging, the goal is for
everyone to leave feeling full.
Celebrating Eid al-fitr at the
Baitur Rahman Mosque
I was honoured to participate in the
sunset breaking of the fast of Ramadan at
the Baitur Rahman Mosque on July 1.
Ramadan is observed by a month of
fasting, prayer and reflection, followed by
festivities, charity and prayer. This year,
the occasion of Canada Day and Eid al-fitr
falling on a Friday is considered a dual
blessing in the Muslim calendar. We were
treated to dinner, and a children’s choir
presentation of O Canada. The evening
concluded with cutting a Canada Day cake,
and evening prayers.
Tour de Delta Marks Another
Year of Cycling Excellence
July 8-10 marked the 15th year of the Tour
de Delta, where hundreds of cyclists
participated in 3 days of racing in our 3
communities. Friday began with the Kids Crit
and the 70 lap road race in North Delta,
followed up by Ladner’s 70 lap criterium,
and finishing with Tsawwassen’s gruelling
13km road race. The Tour de Delta
continues to be a first class event, and has
grown considerably in both size and notoriety,
as we partner in BC’s Superweek. Racers
shared in a prize purse of $25 000. Along
with the main event, all 3 communities
hosted family festivals to entertain the
spectators out to cheer on the cyclists. Many
thanks to all those who volunteered to help.
The Government of Canada is holding a
number of regional consultations to hear
