Dear Galveston College Community, Thank you for taking the time to read my supporting documentation. I would first like to express my sincere appreciation to the person who nominated me to possibly receive a 2015 Employee Performance Award in the classified employee category. To be recognized for what I contribute to Galveston College is a great honor. Below are my responses to the three criteria requested to demonstrate evidence of a win-win attitude, collaboration, and enhancement of college operations. Win-Win Attitude I would like to use this forum to say to those who are not aware (especially the newbies) that the President’s Office is more accessible and willing to help than you may think. Please do not waste time contemplating whether to ask for assistance. We are on the same team trying to reach the same goals. It is my belief that we can accomplish more working together, so when I am approached with an issue, my first instinct is to determine what I can contribute to get the job done in the most efficient manner. For students who seek assistance from the President’s Office, I want them to walk away satisfied with my ability to handle their concerns and that they leave with a good impression of the College, one that will retain them as a student. I celebrate the successes of my colleagues and the students because it results in the overall success of the College. Finally, although part of my job is to listen to faculty, staff, and students and help them find solutions, sometimes it is just to listen. Collaboration My objective is to work with all faculty and staff to find solutions that promote the best interest of the College and to meet the needs of students. This is done by working with my colleagues to resolve issues and following up to see that everyone is satisfied with the outcome. Because I can be a resource of information when Board members, faculty, staff, and students come to me for help, I do my best to provide an answer or direct them to the best resource without “passing the buck.” Being the Executive Assistant to the President also comes with the responsibility to collaborate beyond the walls of Galveston College. As the President takes on additional roles representing the College, some may include me. I work with outside vendors planning events, officials from other institutions, and legislative staff. With each Board election, I solicit the expertise of my co-workers to help me with my limited translation of documents from English to Spanish, and team up with the staff of the Galveston County Elections Division, the City Secretary, and the College’s attorney to conduct the election. Enhancement of College Operations I do believe in working efficiently so I am constantly looking for ways to improve processes to accomplish various tasks. An example would be the implementation of BoardBook®, software that enables the published Board Report for each meeting to be in an electronic format. When I began in this position, the process was to prepare the report, have Media print and bind it,

  • Dear Galveston College Community,

Thank you for taking the time to read my supporting documentation. I would first like to

express my sincere appreciation to the person who nominated me to possibly receive a 2015

Employee Performance Award in the classified employee category. To be recognized for what I

contribute to Galveston College is a great honor.

Below are my responses to the three criteria requested to demonstrate evidence of a win-win

attitude, collaboration, and enhancement of college operations.

    Win-Win Attitude

I would like to use this forum to say to those who are not aware (especially the newbies) that

the Presidents Office is more accessible and willing to help than you may think. Please do not

waste time contemplating whether to ask for assistance. We are on the same team trying to

reach the same goals. It is my belief that we can accomplish more working together, so when I

am approached with an issue, my first instinct is to determine what I can contribute to get the

job done in the most efficient manner. For students who seek assistance from the Presidents

Office, I want them to walk away satisfied with my ability to handle their concerns and that

they leave with a good impression of the College, one that will retain them as a student. I

celebrate the successes of my colleagues and the students because it results in the overall

success of the College. Finally, although part of my job is to listen to faculty, staff, and students

and help them find solutions, sometimes it is just to listen.

    Collaboration

My objective is to work with all faculty and staff to find solutions that promote the best interest

of the College and to meet the needs of students. This is done by working with my colleagues

to resolve issues and following up to see that everyone is satisfied with the outcome. Because I

can be a resource of information when Board members, faculty, staff, and students come to me

for help, I do my best to provide an answer or direct them to the best resource without

passing the buck. Being the Executive Assistant to the President also comes with the

responsibility to collaborate beyond the walls of Galveston College. As the President takes on

additional roles representing the College, some may include me. I work with outside vendors

planning events, officials from other institutions, and legislative staff. With each Board

election, I solicit the expertise of my co-workers to help me with my limited translation of

documents from English to Spanish, and team up with the staff of the Galveston County

Elections Division, the City Secretary, and the Colleges attorney to conduct the election.

    Enhancement of College Operations

I do believe in working efficiently so I am constantly looking for ways to improve processes to

accomplish various tasks. An example would be the implementation of BoardBook, software

that enables the published Board Report for each meeting to be in an electronic format. When

I began in this position, the process was to prepare the report, have Media print and bind it,

  • and deliver it to the Regents home the Friday before the Wednesday meeting. Those reports

were originally delivered by me and, depending on how late the last agenda item materials

were submitted, delivery would be completed well past 5:00 PM. This process evolved with

Security personnel delivering the reports, and I am eternally grateful to all of the staff who took

on this task. Now, with BoardBook the reports for the most part are electronic (a few reports

are still printed). Board members can view them on iPads and a version is available to the

public. With this change, the College saves on personnel time to print and deliver the reports,

and it is a more eco-friendly process.

Thank you again for taking the time to learn a little about me and my position. I hope I have

shed some light in response to my nomination and that you will consider me for this award.

    Sincerely,

    Carla D. Biggers
