"Upon arrival, we were able to determine that the subject in the vehicle, in the driver's seat, wasasleep," said Castle Rock Police Commander Jason Lyons. "We knew we had, at least a moment, toprepare and put our officers in place to affect the arrest."

Lyons told 7NEWS that he approached the truck with his gun drawn and that's when he saw thesuspect asleep.

"We wanted to take advantage of the fact that he was asleep, and so I asked the responding officersto just turn their sirens off so that we'd maintain that element of surprise if we needed it," saidLyons. "It was best case scenario for everyone involved, certainly."

The brazen carjacker's crime spree began in a parking garage at 100 E. Tennessee Ave., near SouthBroadway and East Mississippi Street, at about 7:17 a.m. Monday, Denver police said.

Police said the victim, James Michael Barlow, was walking to his pickup truck when he noticed aman casing vehicles in the garage and confronted him. The suspect stabbed Barlow, got intoBarlow's black Toyota Tacoma and drove off.

The stolen pickup repeatedly resurfaced in the Denver-Aurora area on Monday.

At 9:15 a.m., the Tacoma was involved in a non-injury hit-and-run crash at Sixth Avenue and AirportRoad, Aurora police said. It disappeared in the area of East Hampden Avenue and South Gun ClubRoad, east of E-470, Aurora police said.

Then, about 12:13 p.m., an Aurora officer spotted the Tacoma in the area of East 14th Avenue andOswego Street, said Aurora police spokesman Sgt. Chris Amsler. When officers tried to stop thetruck at 14th and Peoria, the driver took off and a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit went southbound on Peoria to Sixth Avenue. It then entered Denver and Denver policewere notified, Amsler said. The Tacoma went south on South Quebec Street to East Alameda Avenueand then west on Alameda Avenue.

In the area of Alameda and South Colorado Boulevard, Denver police joined and took over thepursuit.

The pickup continued to travel west past the Cherry Creek Mall. At Speer and Logan, policeterminated the pursuit due to concerns for public safety, Amsler said.

The suspect "did try to hit one of our officers head-on at one point, and speeds reached 60 mph,"Amsler said.

Then at 4:30 p.m., an undercover officer spotted the black Tacoma at a 7-Eleven store at EastMississippi Avenue and South Sable Boulevard in Aurora. When backup police officers arrived, thedriver took off and another pursuit began, Amsler said.

Patrol cars chased the pickup westbound on Alameda Avenue until a patrol car collided with twovehicles -- a black Dodge Charger and a silver pickup - at the intersection of Alameda and SouthMoline Street, Amsler said.

Leonard Berndt saw the chase as he was driving.
