CARITAS Internationalis…
It started with one man in the turn of the 19th century Germany. Today Caritas Internationalis is one of the largest networks dedicated to reducing poverty and injustice throughout the world.

Hatred to HopeCaritas strives for peace and reconciliation. In almost every conflict in the last half of century, Caritas has been building bridges in the Holy Land, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Columbia, Sudan, Sri Lanka and Uganda. Our task is not easy, but none is more urgent.
Origin
• 1897 The first "Caritas" started in a coal mining area in Germany.• 1901 “Caritas” was set up in Switzerland, the United States and other countries. • 1940 During the World War II disaster relief, Caritas could not undertake huge undertaking. The European countries join hands for support.
• 1945 After World War II, aid in the
reconstruction of many countries
which particularly benefited Germany.
• 1950 13 countries join the group of Caritas
Internationalis.
• 1960 Members increased to 61 states.
• 1983 Member states reached to 118.
• 2002 At this time, there are 163 members
Purpose• Give witness of Christ’s love for the poor.
• Care for the poorest, the refugees, the homeless and socially marginalized, and hungry people all over the world, regardless of religion and race.
• Immediate help on emergency needs.
• Put Gospel into action; love one’s neighbor, involvement in the society, maximize the resources to take care of the poorest people around the world.
• Bear witness and take action on the value of human dignity to relieve the poverty caused by the pressure of the social structure.
• Caritas pursues justice and peace from the local context to the national and international level.
