History of Oostelijke Vechtplassen

• Lakes are part of Oostelijke Vechtplassen

• Nature reserve covering an area of 6988 ha

• Lakes were dug out in the late 19th century.

• The peat land was mined to be used for heating.

• This gave the distinguished shape of the lakes.

• In the 20th century the lakes were dredged sand extraction.
