Caring - Sharing - Learning Together 12th September 2019 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE: IN THE SPOTLIGHT! CONGRATULATIONS OLIVIA Its finally here! Family Fun Day! Id like to acknowledge the hard work behind the scenes of the P and C volunteers and school staff who have been working away feverishly to get everything to come together on Friday aſternoon. This is another example of how parents and the school work together to build an exemplary school culture. How do we define culture and what makes one exemplary? In many ways an ex- emplary culture is something that is intangible and cannot be seen; it is more of a feelingthat you have in a school. People working in a school with an exemplary culture feel posive and respond posively to one another. An exemplary culture in a school is about staff, parents, students and the community feeling enormous pride in their school. It is about teachers feeling energised, appreciated and mo- vated; being open to new challenges; unafraid to look crically on current pracc- es and a willingness to work as part of a team. It is about students striving to do their best and feeling proud of their learning. It is about visitors to the school say- ing that this school has a great feel about it. It is about parents who are keen to be involved in their childrens learning and who want to send their children to the school because it feels right. An exemplary school culture is one in which: There is producve communicaon between all secons of the school commu- nity. There is ongoing evaluaon of programs and policies to ensure connual refine- ment and improvement. There is inclusiveness of the school community in decision making. There is parental and community involvement. There are challenging and engaging programs accessible to all students. There is respect for high standards of achievement. There is high staff and student morale and a strong commitment to teaching and learning. So what have I learnt about the school culture at Mountain Creek aſter one term? It is EXEMPLARY! I look forward to seeing you all on Friday night for a great even- ing of entertainment and a celebraon of the wonderful school culture Mountain Creek State School has built during its first 25 years. PRINCIPAL’S

MESSAGE:

IN THE SPOTLIGHT!

CONGRATULATIONS OLIVIA

It’s finally here! Family Fun Day! I’d like to acknowledge the hard work behind the scenes of the P and C volunteers and school staff who have been working away feverishly to get everything to come together on Friday afternoon. This is another example of how parents and the school work together to build an exemplary school culture.

How do we define culture and what makes one exemplary? In many ways an ex-emplary culture is something that is intangible and cannot be seen; it is more of a ‘feeling’ that you have in a school. People working in a school with an exemplary culture feel positive and respond positively to one another. An exemplary culture in a school is about staff, parents, students and the community feeling enormous pride in their school. It is about teachers feeling energised, appreciated and moti-vated; being open to new challenges; unafraid to look critically on current practic-es and a willingness to work as part of a team. It is about students striving to do their best and feeling proud of their learning. It is about visitors to the school say-ing that this school has a great feel about it. It is about parents who are keen to be involved in their children’s learning and who want to send their children to the school because it feels right. An exemplary school culture is one in which:

• There is productive communication between all sections of the school commu-nity.

• There is ongoing evaluation of programs and policies to ensure continual refine-ment and improvement.

• There is inclusiveness of the school community in decision making. • There is parental and community involvement. • There are challenging and engaging programs accessible to all students. • There is respect for high standards of achievement. • There is high staff and student morale and a strong commitment to teaching

and learning.

So what have I learnt about the school culture at Mountain Creek after one term?

It is EXEMPLARY! I look forward to seeing you all on Friday night for a great even-

ing of entertainment and a celebration of the wonderful school culture Mountain

Creek State School has built during its first 25 years.

NEW UNIFORM DESIGNS

Celebrating 25 years of

education in 2019.

This year, the Student Council was asked by the P and C to come up with some designs of new shirts for the school. These shirts have been presented at assemblies and so far, we have had some brilliant feed-back. In order to give others a chance to have their input, the samples will be on display in the Mountain Creek Hall foyer for one week only! If you want to have your say on our new uniform come down to the hall in week 1 of term 4! More details about our shirt samples below: 1. The Everyday Mountain Creek State School Cotton Backed Polo Shirt The Fabric is 50% Polyester (on the outside) and 50% Cotton (on the inside) which is next to your skin and lets your body breath, thus mak-ing it much cooler than the current school shirt. The white around the collar has been replaced with a navy blue. This makes it easier to clean as the white collars were often easily stained. This shirt is smarter and more formal than the Sports Shirts and has the school logo embroided on it. In addition, it the MCSS letters are printed on the back of the collar. 2. Sublimated Polo Sports Shirts The fabric is 100% lightweight polyester micromesh which is very cool fabric. The MCSS logo is printed on. The strik-

ing colours and modern patterns make for an exciting design. Other advantages include protection against the sun,

quick dry and no ironing required. The names of the houses are presented on the back of the shirts.

The safety of our students, staff and families is our highest priority and we will continue to act on the advice of the Department and emergency services. Our focus is keeping our school community safe and that’s why we are asking all parents and caregivers to please talk to their children about the dangers of fire. You can take immediate action to reduce the risks of fireplay by: explaining to your child that fire is not a toy, but instead is a tool used by responsible adults teaching your children, if they find matches or lighters, to immediately hand them to adults or tell an adult if

they see another child playing with matches and lighter using the checklist on this brochure to increase your family’s safety contacting Queensland Fire and Emergency Services to request the Fight Fire Fascination program (see page 2 of

brochure). Especially in this current weather environment, there is a very real risk to people and property. Thank you for your support with this. North Coast Region Department of Education

This term Year 2 students have been learning about Life Cycles within their Science Unit. 2S decided to grow ‘Grass Heads’ for our fathers to celebrate Fa-ther’s Day. In class the students have been busy mak-ing observations regarding the germination of the seeds and growth of the grass and root systems each week. We grew them outside our classroom to allow for their need for sunlight. They also required water-ing daily. Not only did we learn a lot, we had such fun growing them!

YEAR 4 TO FACE OFF IN SOCCER GRANDFINAL

The Year 4 lunchtime soccer program finishes with the grand final being played on Tuesday at morning tea. This year proved that Year 4’s and Year 3’s had some quality soccer players with some hard fought matches being played. The grand final will be held between 4EA Hungry and 4BH Poland with the win-ner taking ‘The Golden Boot’ trophy back to their room for the year. Third place play-off will be between Year 3 Belgium and 4B England. Each Year 4 class created two equal strength mixed teams of 6-9 players and a round robin tournament was played each Tuesday at morning tea and lunchtimes during the term. This year we had two empty places in the draw, so the Year 3’s were happy to help with each Year 3 class getting the chance to play two games each. The Year 3’s were amazing and proved to the Year 4’s that they were a force to be reckoned with. The competition, which is organised by Mr Wockner, and supervised by Mr Carter, Chappy and Mr Wockner, has the intention of creating an organised sporting activity for the children to be involved in. To date there have been many successes with a number of children discovering an interest in soccer and building friendships with peers that they did not know. Thank you to Mr Black who also helped out and supported his class every lunch. Congratulations Year 4 and Year 3 for your great sportsmanship. A huge thank you also to the Year 6 referees who volunteered their lunch breaks to officiate the games. Craig Wockner Acting Deputy Principal

ICAS TESTS ONLINE The 2019 ICAS tests have begun with students completing Science last Thursday and Spelling Bee this Thursday. The test have moved away from paper this year and are now electronic. With a big thanks to the school technolo-gy team, we have had a problem free start to the new system. Children had to log in directly to the website and complete activities live. The Spelling test will have a lock down browser with one-time codes for the students to use allowing questions to be asked in both a written and auditory form. The benefit of the new system is that we expect results should come back to us much quicker. The English and Mathematics ICAS tests will be held in week 10 on Tuesday and Thursday September 17th and 19th in the L block computer lab. The tests will be held in two shifts for English and 3 shifts for Mathematics so that students can access computers.

WILDLIFE WARRIERS Welcome to 3Ls Wildlife Warriers who spend their lunch times picking up rubbish around the school and in the gar-dens. They have brought collection bags from home along with rubber gloves to help pick up the rubbish. They have even made posters to hang up around the school. Awesome work Creekers!

AROUND THE CLASSROOMS RESOURCE CENTRE CHAPLAINCY

We have had a wonderful start to the boys Honour program. Over the last three weeks 10 boys have walked into the decorated Honour Room and greeted the leaders with a firm handshake. We have taught them the art of tying a tie which they have found challenging and rewarding. We have en-joyed playing games and have loved getting to know each other. The boys have also learnt a lot of wonderful life skills during this time and we have much more to pass on to them. At the moment we are focussing on teaching them to recognise the incredi-ble value they and others have. It is important that they acknowledge their value and learn practical ways of looking after themselves (e.g. personal hygiene, mental health, nutrition, exercise, etc.). This week we focussed on being "one of a kind" in the world. To demonstrate the meaning of selfworth we invited a car enthusiast to exhibit his very rare car (there are only 3 in Australia). The car is worth over half a million dollars and he showed the boys how he looked after it to help maintain its value. The boys also got to share some of their unique talents, some of which were hilarious (i.e., mak-ing noises out of their ears, bending their arms backwards like a contortion-ist, etc.). We have a lot of fun and laughter in the sessions and I look forward to the rest of the program which finishes at the end of November. Next week a personal trainer from a local gym will join us to share his inspiring life story. He will also show the boys some excellent physical exercises the boys can do at home to keep fit and healthy. Cheers Chappy
