THE JOURNEY OF HOPE

Our Storyn Caring For Others, Inc. (CFO)

began in November 2001, helping restore personal dignity and provide basic necessities to economically disadvantaged individuals, senior citizens, the disabled, the unemployed and families in need.

n We are a Human Services Organization that seeks to eradicate poverty through feeding, educating, clothing and housing individuals and families around the world.

n We provide a continuum of both on-site services and global outreach assistance to twenty-three Metro Atlanta zip codes and numerous cities and countries throughout the world; CFO also collaborates with government agencies, social service organizations and churches around the state to provide food, new clothing, furniture and other products to people in need.

n Caring For Others has since broadened our path of dignity and hope across borders and overseas, partnering and serving impoverished communities in countries such as Belize, Guyana, Nigeria, Antigua The Philippines and Haiti.

CARING FOR OTHERS ESTAblISHES WEST COAST dISTRIbUTION NETWORk

When former Board Chairman Will Kaser moved to California more than three years ago, he consistently advocated the expansion of Caring For Others distribution and outreach in order to increase product donations from corporate partners. In 2012, Will leveraged his employer’s (Union Bank) corporate social responsibility program to establish a network of community partners in Los Angeles and Orange County. As a result, the newly established network distributed more than 30,000 pairs of shoes and 6,000 units of the popular pillow pets to 25 Southern California and international charities in October 2012 and performed two additional distributions before the year closed.

CFO is very pleased to have a West Coast Distribution network. Shipping costs often inhibit our ability to move product and have the desired effect on the communities that we serve. Having an outlet in Los Angeles increases our effectiveness as a charity while satisfying the interests of our corporate partners and improving awareness of the Caring For Others brand. Launching West Coast Distribution has been a significant milestone in the evolution and vision of Caring For Others.

We are so appreciative of our new friends in California and glad to welcome more than 30 West Coast Partner Agencies that are helping Caring For Others serve new communities.

mESSAGE FROm THE PRESIdENT

I have always had a proverbial “Green Thumb,” and in planting and growing a fruitful garden, I’ve come to understand that this life that we live is much like a garden. It is only with careful planning, proper cultivation and plenty of love that we, or a garden, can grow.

More than 10 years ago, I was given the task of growing this garden called Caring For Others, Inc. This journey has been nothing short of miraculous. CFO’s successes have continually amazed me in so many ways. Yet my prouder moments have not come during the harvest, but during the process. To see a seedling or young child discover hope for the first time is the instance that warms my heart. Unloading a shipment of food that will feed hundreds of people or packing a bag of household effects for a family that could not afford toilet paper, lifts my spirit.

At Caring For Others, 2012 was such a monumental year. We launched an ongoing capital campaign to eradicate homelessness through hope, help and healing. The Caring For Others Community Center was dedicated and opened by the honorable Ambassador Andrew Young and former Heavyweight Champion Boxer Evander Holyfield. Our CareMart Store expansion was a success, and the Grand Opening was like none other. I could not be more pleased to just witness the great things that have happened for Caring For Others and the people that we touch daily.

Our story is one of great strength and perseverance, a story of patience and love. Our story is a journey of hope, from seedling to mighty tree. I wish that I could personally thank each and every donor, every person and every staff member that has assisted Caring For Others become what it is today. Hopefully one day, I will have that chance. As for now, I will say thank you through giving, thank you through sharing, thank you through loving and most of all, thank you through continually offering the gift of hope. We do not work for ourselves or even for one another; we work for the greater good.

Sincerely,

Eslene Richmond-Shockley Founder/President & CEO Caring For Others, Inc.

mESSAGE FROm THE CHAIRmAN OF THE bOARd

The year 2012 was an exciting one for Caring For Others. We finalized the purchase of our building, established stronger ties with other agencies and hosted the grand opening of our new and enlarged facility. Part of the expanded area of our home building has been converted into a Community Center, sorely needed in the Hapeville area, and a portion has been used to expand CareMart, our store selling new merchandise donated by various corporate partners. In these difficult times of finding sources of funding for charitable organizations nationwide, CareMart has been a blessing to us in bringing in much needed funds to help defray the costs of our operations. If you have not yet visited our facilities and CareMart, please do come and shop, as in doing so, you will not only find some exceptional deals, but will also be helping so many in the Atlanta area who otherwise will continue struggling to obtain the basic necessities of life.

Success is a hard thing to measure for an agency like ours. Certainly the expansion can be considered a successful step in our evolution; however, when one considers the need in Atlanta has not diminished, but continues to expand, I ask whether we as a community are truly successful? I think not. We still have the dubious honor of having the most children in the nation living at or below the poverty level. We see a diminishing middle class and a closing of doors of potential support from those areas that historically helped the most—industry and government. For the funding that remains from these sources, the competition is fierce. We continue to see other charities in the Atlanta area closing their doors—some after many years of operation. One can say that the fact that our doors are still open is a sign of success. Yet, with fewer agencies, the burden of helping others that need it most becomes greater for those that remain with their doors open.

Considering the always-changing needs of the communities we serve, we, as an agency, will be recreating ourselves in 2013. We are expanding our focus from an agency focused on helping to prevent homelessness to a human services agency focusing on helping people who lack the basic necessities to live with dignity. To be able to say in our next Annual Report that we successfully delivered on this mission, we need your continued support and prayers.

At the risk of being repetitive, I will close with the same summation I provided in last year’s annual report. We count on each and every one of you to help us achieve the level of success we and the community need. Your prayers, volunteer hours and donations help all of us build a better community in Atlanta and create an environment of opportunity for all.

Kind regards,

Joseph Northington Chairman of the Board Caring For Others, Inc.

Each year as we begin to reflect back on the accomplishments of the previous 12 months, the first thought that comes to mind is that it was the best year ever. This is not the result of just overwhelming optimism; we can truly say that 2012 was an amazing year for Caring For Others. The year brought a vital expansion to our facility, which is our home base, and with that expansion, we know that the reach of Caring For Others will now grow exponentially. Indeed, the proof

YEAR IN REvIEW

is already there, in the results of our 2012 fourth quarter. Our hearts are bursting with the potential that our larger facility opens up for us.

We kicked off the year with a Child Safety Day on a cold February afternoon. Through partnerships with K.I.D.S. and Graco, we were able to provide pre-registered families with car seats, booster seats and strollers to keep their children safe during transportation. The Atlanta Police Department was on-site to show parents how to correctly

install the car seats, and we had help from more than 20 volunteers from Graco too. This effort was able to reach 200 local families and through Agency Partners, another 300 families throughout the state.

The 2012 Community Day tradition took place during summer when Caring For Others welcomed 50 children from the Atlanta Police Department’s summer camp program to our

headquarters. The young volunteers assisted us with on-site cleanup, clearing space for our community garden, planting flowers and washing cars. After a long (and hot) morning of hard work, we all celebrated with a cookout for lunch. Afterwards, the children received some new clothes to take home in appreciation for their efforts.

YEAR IN REvIEW

The Community Day cleanup was part of a larger project of several months to remodel our building. Late in 2011, we had been blessed with the opportunity to purchase the building that housed Caring For Others. Previously, we had occupied only a portion of the building, and with the purchase, our available space had doubled. Throughout 2012, we counted on the help of so many members of our community to turn this new space into a Community Center and an expanded

CareMart. During these months, we also created a new website so that when the time came, everything would be in place to launch our new facility.

In October we were ready, and on a beautiful fall day, we paired the Ribbon Cutting at the Community Center with our annual No Bare Soles Shoe Distribution. There haven’t been many days that come close to the excitement felt at Caring For Others when the dream of

Page 9: Caring For Others, Inc. l 2012 Annual Report · The 2012 Community Day tradition took place during summer when Caring For Others welcomed 50 children from the Atlanta Police Department’s

7

a Community Center became a reality. We were thrilled to welcome former UN Ambassador and Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young who helped cut the ribbon on this vital community space. Following the Ribbon Cutting, we held an Open House to allow guests to visit the Community Center and the expanded CareMart.

The No Bare Soles event followed the Ribbon Cutting by just a couple hours. With our partners

BOBS from SKECHERS, Fashion Delivers and Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, we were able to distribute a total of 40,000 pairs of brand new children’s shoes. We even got some help from five-time Heavyweight Champion of the World Evander Holyfield who spent several hours passing out shoes and helping us load the trucks our Agency Partners brought.

Page 10: Caring For Others, Inc. l 2012 Annual Report · The 2012 Community Day tradition took place during summer when Caring For Others welcomed 50 children from the Atlanta Police Department’s

8

In addition to reaching more families in Atlanta and throughout the Southeast via our Agency Partners, in 2012, Caring For Others inaugurated West Coast Distribution. Thanks to our former Board Chair Will Kaser who moved to California, there have been three distributions in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas since October. Will established a network of community partners on the West Coast through his employer Union Bank’s social responsibility program. Broadening our reach not only allows us to bring needed

assistance to more families, it also means that we are able to accept larger donations from donors. Coupled with the expansion of our building and CareMart, this genuinely takes our abilities to a new level.

We closed out the year as we always do, with a Thanksgiving Distribution in November and our Annual Community Holiday Giving in December. Our Community Holiday Giving felt particularly delightful this year because it was the first time

YEAR IN REvIEW

we were able to host it indoors. We decorated the Community Center, set up display tables and walked our clients through in warmth and comfort.

Caring For Others began with a small dose of optimism more than 11 years ago, and I cannot say that times have always been easy. The years have been a true journey of hope, and walking through the doors each day, being greeted by the dedicated

and generous volunteer staff, working with our incredible donors and Agency Partners and seeing the relief on our clients’ faces has kept that optimism growing. I am so happy to say that 2012 was like watching a flower bloom at Caring For Others, and we are going to keep blossoming to be there when families, seniors, our community and victims of disaster in any part of the world need us.
