22 METTLER TOLEDO IndMagazine 2/2005 In France AVIAPARTNER operates in ten airports, including Bale Mulhouse, the storage area for three countries (Ger- many, France and Switzerland). Air freight security regulations are particu- larly strict in France and virtually all packages must pass through an approved X-ray scanner before being measured and weighed. Airlines use the dimensions and weight of the package for billing, therefore it is essential that the measure- ments recorded are accurate. This re- quirement led AVIAPARTNER to equip the Mulhouse site with a METTLER TOLEDO weight and volume measure- ment system. The packages are placed a conveyor, passed through the X-ray scanner and then through a Cargoscan CS5056 meas- uring frame for three-dimensional measurement. A weighing platform, in- stalled on the conveyor, enables the weight to be recorded and this system is connected to a central PC. Software spe- cially developed by METTLER TOLEDO for AVIAPARTNER prepares and transmits all the official documents, including security certificate, air waybill, etc. The system also records all important data, such as the number of packages, the type of product, the name of the forward- ing agent, airline, consignee, etc. All these operations are performed within a minimum amount of time, previously CARGOSCAN used in the Cargo Support Department The Belgian group AVIAPARTNER specialises in providing airport support services. they had to be carried out manually.Patrice Mordiconi, head of the Mulhousesite explains, "In the first month of oper-ation we were able to increase billing by25%, compared with the period prior toinstallation of the METTLER TOLEDOsystem. This equipment has enabled usto improve our procedures, provide ourclients with a better quality of service andstrengthen our brand image."

Over 1200 tonnes of freight pass throughthe Cargoscan unit each month, this rep-resents around 2500 packages. The site isopen from 05:30 to 22:00 and subject topeaks in activity at the end of the week -Friday represents 60 to 70% of the totalflow. The installation of the new systemhas enabled this fluctuation to beabsorbed more efficiently.

Following this success, the METTLERTOLEDO weight and volume measure-ment system is soon to be installed atother AVIAPARTNER sites in France.

The weight and volume of the pallet are measuredfollowing X-ray-based inspection.

Our new 4-series stainless steel weighing terminals have been designed specifi-cally for these environmental conditions. They offer product features, which areideally suited to use in the following industries:

Food– Hygienically safe surfaces– Easy cleaning thanks to the optimized housing design– IP69K protection enables high-pressure cleaningPositively assessed by the EHEDG (European Engineering and Design Group) and the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation)

Pharma– Design meets GMP requirements– Precision balances can be connected– MinWeigh warning function for defined minimum weight– 2-balance configurations for connection to formulation systems

Chemicals– Dust and water-proof according to IP69K– Stainless steel housing for aggressive environments– International approvals– Easy process integration thanks to a number of data interfaces

Product range with 3 performance levels– IND429: General weighing, zero setting, taring, unit change– IND439: As IND429 plus gross/net display, counting, 2-balance mode– IND449: As IND429/439 plus memory options, date/time, counting, totaling,

checkweighing

MobilityThe optional storage battery is built-in, which ensures optimum protectionagainst damage and loss. A discharge degree display indicates in good timewhen charging is required.

InterfacesIntegration in the process environment is made easy by a variety of differentinterfaces. In addition to the RS232 interface built-in as standard, anotherinterface is available as an option:– Ethernet– USB slave– RS485/422– Digital I/O – Second RS232

Weighing technologyThe IND4x9 terminals can be used with the entire weighing platform productline from METTLER TOLEDO – regardless of whether an analog or digital(IDNet) interface is used.

IP protectionWith IP69K protection according to DIN40050, the weighing terminals with-stand even the harshest environmental conditions.

They can be combined with weighing platforms from the PBA430 series to pro-vide an optimum level of protection, ensuring use without any problems evenin hygienically sensitive areas.
