What kind of social contact is being oered? The support worker could accompany the older person on activities like walking, playing bowls, playing snooker or visiting a pub, coffee shop or garden centre. The venues are agreed between the cared for, thecarer and the service organiser on home and introductory visits.

How is the arrangement set up?When a request for support is first made, the service organiser arrangesto visit the cared for person and their carer in their own home. Then a support worker will be introduced and details of the arrangement talked through and set up at that meeting.

The arrangement will go ahead after that and the service organiser will phone both the worker and the carer after the first arrangement to see how it went.

Who are the support workers?Carefully selected people with a wide range of skills. Three references will have been taken up, including one from their GP and they will also have had a Criminal Records check. Many of the workers have been carers, personally or professionally and we offer them ongoing appropriate training.

How much respite can one older person have?We aim to offer 1-5 hours a week, fortnight or month dependant on the availability of our support workers.

What area does the Support Worker Service cover? We work within the vale of York boundary. As far north as Strensall, as far south as Escrick, as far east as Kexby and as far west as Hessay.

The carer respite service gives people who are caring for anolder relative or friend the chance to have a break, knowingthat their relative or friend is in safe hands. Supported by the City of York Council and the Vale of YorkCCG, the service aims to help older loved ones and theirinformal carers by giving the older person increased socialcontact and their carer a break.
