Chicago Careers in Higher Education (CCIHE), in

consultation with UChicago’s world-renowned

faculty, offers a unique set of resources to support

students interested in pursuing graduate education in

the arts and sciences.

CCIHE offers workshops, programs, and individual

advising to help students find research and other

career-related opportunities, and make informed

decisions about which type of graduate program is

most appropriate for their career goals. CCIHE also

guides students in building relationships with faculty,

securing strong letters of reference, navigating the

graduate or professional school application process,

writing effective statements of purpose, and finding

valuable interim-year experiences.

Supportive Faculty In addition to preparing students for graduate school through rigorous courses and intellectual discussions, UChicago faculty members also mentor students, provide research experiences, offer opportunities to teach, and sponsor student conferences. During CCIHE programs, faculty members offer students their expertise about preparing for and applying to graduate programs.

research Opportunities CCIHE collaborates with offices and departments across campus to keep students informed of valuable research opportunities. As students at a major research university, undergraduates have the chance to collaborate on projects with faculty and graduate students from throughout the University’s four graduate divisions, six professional schools, interdisciplinary institutes and centers, and the Medical Center. College students have access to paid and unpaid research oppor-tunities and mentorships through individual departments and major programs. In collaboration with faculty advisors, CCIHE helps students identify appropriate training opportunities and timely support for their research. The College offers research-related internships through the Jeff Metcalf Fellows Program at such organizations as:

Additionally, a campuswide research assistantship database provides a central resource for students looking for research experience.

The College also works to increase participation of under-represented minorities in scholarship through the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program and the Leadership Alliance, which offer mentored research and national conference participation.

Alumni Mentors over 80 recent UChicago graduates in a variety of fields have vol-unteered to answer questions about academic programs and the application process, and they recount their experiences of translating their UChicago educations into both success in graduate school and careers in academia.

research Symposia CCIHE hosts two campuswide research symposia each year. Students conduct research related to their course work, research assistantships, and summer employment and projects, and they are funded by a variety of sources.

Conference Presentations CCIHE funds students to present their research at regional, national, and international conferences. Students receive valuable feedback on their work and network with important scholars in their fields.

Graduate and Professional School Fair The Graduate and Professional School (GPS) Fair, held each fall, brings together a number of different graduate and professional school options for students, allowing them to talk with representatives directly to find out more about their programs. Graduate program representatives also visit the campus individually and offer information sessions on campus throughout the academic year.

Gap Year Support Increasingly, College students wait to apply for graduate programs until after they graduate, giving them time to be sure they are making the right decision and are able to assemble a competitive application. CCIHE supports students who choose to take time between the College and their graduate programs in several ways. Advisors continue to work with alumni who may need assistance with their applications or decision-making processes. CCIHE also helps students and alumni find appropriate gap year experiences, whether they be language

study, research or leisure travel, study abroad, or jobs in their field of interest. Students have taught English around the globe either independently or through such structured programs as the JET Program. They have participated in Teach for America; gone abroad on Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships, Fulbright awards, or Rotary Foundation International Fellowships; and have researched and held fellowships with think tanks, research organizations, and such government agencies as the Federal Reserve and National Institutes of Health.

“Things that are difficult in some settings—interdisciplinary study, working between fields, using different lenses to look at your material—the University of Chicago does really well. It’s not just about one perspective. It’s about trying to look at these topics from multiple viewpoints.”

ADEN KUMlErUChicago degree AB’96, interdisciplinary studies in the humanitiesHome Chicago, il Occupation Assistant professor in Art History at the University of Chicago

“Thinking hard, talking passionately, and really caring about ideas—those are things people do collaboratively at UChicago. The experiences I had inside and outside the classroom as an undergraduate—learning to listen analytically to other people even when I disagreed with them—served me extremely well in graduate school.”
