Quick guide to Electrical Engineering
Since Independence, discourses on power
and energy have been quite controversial.
Electricity generation has been at the core
of every Five-Year Plan. Even after 68 years
of independence, India has remained a power deficit
country with 35.5 percent of the population still living
without access to electricity.
Modern life would freeze; economy could stumble
if power deficit is not fixed. Thus, electricity is required
everywhere; from agriculture fields to communication
systems to manufacturing gigantic rockets. Impor-
tance of energy can’t be over-stated.
It is in this context that the role of Electrical Engi-
neer takes a front seat. So, if you think you can con-
tribute to recharging the power sources, dispense
power across geographical boundaries and cushion
the country from electricity shocks, then a career in
Electrical Engineering is a possible choice for you.
Electrical engineering refers to electrical machin-
ery, problems of generation, transmission and distribu-
tion of electrical energy, electrical controls in factories,
motors and their control and transformers. One of its
objectives is to provide electrical power to customers.

Candidates keen on taking up B.Tech in Electrical Engineering courses in IITs
and NITs, should have scored at least 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics,
Chemistry in combination at 10+2. Thereafter, the eligible candidates are
expected to qualify JEE (Main) examination conducted by Central Board of
Secondary Education (CBSE) annually. Regional institutes may have their respec-
tive examinations for admitting students. Those who qualify JEE (Advanced) can
seek admission in IITs.
After completing B.Tech/BE, one can also opt for M.Tech/MS in various spe-
cializations. For M.Tech degree course, candidates are selected on the basis of
GATE score. However, candidates with exceptional performance in their qualifying
degree may be offered direct admission in some institutes. There are several engi-
neering colleges in India that offers M.Tech programmes in electrical engineering
with different specializations.
[The candidates, who wish to pursue Electrical Engineering should havepassed Higher Secondary Board exam from a recognized board in India withMathematics, Physics and Chemistry with 50 percent]

Quick guide to Electrical Engineering
Electrical Engineering is a field, which deals with the study and application
of electricity, electronics and electro-magnetism. It involves the study of
electrical and electronics components such as electric motors, navigation
systems, medical devices, broadcast and communication systems, power
generation systems, electrical distribution systems, electric grids etc. It also deals
with electrical appliances. It covers several other aspects of control system, power,
signal processing and telecommunication.
Electrical Engineering has a profound impact on other related fields such as
Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Biomedical engineering etc.
The degree spans for eight semesters, designated as Bachelor of Engineering
(BE) or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) at undergraduate level and with speciali-
zation in the subject domain at postgraduate and doctoral level. The undergradu-
ate syllabus in the Indian universities typically includes major subjects of Electrical
Machines, Switchgear protection, Electrical Drivers, High Voltage Engineering,
Power System Analysis and Control, Power System Protection.
In some cases, Electrical Engineering may include Electronics Engineering as
well. Some of the universities have only one department of Electrical Engineering
in which they cover subjects belonging to both the branches.
Core subjects:
l Electricity Technology and Machines
l Circuit Analysis, Electronics
[Combination of classroom and laboratory work during eight semesters of B.Techcourses provides a strong foundation to aspiring Electrical Engineers for enteringthe profession or further studies.]

Job ProspectsTo make India a ‘Power House’, the industry requires huge numbers of engineers
to tackle the prevailing power deficit. Since industrial expansion is on the upswing,
the industry is looking for fresh enthusiastic minds to contribute their skills for its
growth.
There are tremendous job opportunities in the domain of Electrical Engineeringwhich include positions in government/private sectors in generation, transmission
and distribution of electrical power, electricity boards as plant engineers, electri-
cal design engineer, field application engineer, automation engineer etc. The field
opens up opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students spanning
the areas of signals processing, embedded systems, control systems, computer
networking, industrial electronics, VLSI Designs, Digital Signal Processing, Satel-
lite Communications, Optical Fiber Communications etc.
Since there is an increasing demand for potential electrical engineers, Electri-
cal Engineering is seen as a promising career option among young aspirants.
The industry offers multiple of roles for skilled professionals. In general, the job
profile may include:
l
Research and blueprinting the design
l Design, manufacture, develop, evaluate, sell, market and administer new electric
components and testing equipment
l Generation, Transmission and Distribution of energy
l
To deal with all kinds of electronic devices ranging from biggest machines to
small size pocket devices
[Involvement of an Electrical Engineer in a project is from the concept and designstage through to implementation and handover. Better job opportunities and goodhigher study options are there for an Electrical Engineer.]

Industry insightsIt goes without saying that power sector is one of the most important sectors for
nation building. The other sectors are heavily dependent on power sector like agri-
culture, manufacturing and services. Many large and small-scale industries are also
dependent on power sector. One without the other cannot function effectively.
A brief summary about power industryl India is world’s third largest producer of electricity with 4.8 percent global share
in electricity generation surpassing Japan and Russia in 2013l
Indian government’s ambitious goal of “power for all” owing to which the power
sector is poised for significant expansion
l 4 percent growth over the previous fiscal in electricity production.
l Compounded annual growth rate of 5.6 percent
l
Positive investment climate, expansion of power industry
l Proposal to add 76,000 MW of power capacity during 12th five year plan (2012-

According to a survey conducted jointly by the Bureau of Labor statistics
(U.S), Salary Comparison and Salary Survey, Master’s in Electrical En-
gineering is the 2nd most successful Master’s degree after Computer
Science in terms of getting a job in the USA. In this course, students are
taught to design, develop and test electrical equipment like radar, navigation sys-
tems and communication systems. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
(BLS), average salary drawn by an Electrical Engineer is around USD 80,000 peryear and the projected growth for these professional will be around 5% for next 5
years. Oil and gas extraction and software publishing are the highest paying indus-
tries for Electrical Engineers.
Electrical equipment designed & manufactured by the Electrical Engineers
are used in many sectors like real estate, transportation, manufacturing and con-
struction and production and distribution of power. In the UK, salaries for freshly
graduated Electrical Engineers range from £20,000 to £25,000, engineers with an
experience of 5 to 10 years can earn between £30,000 and £40,000 and the senior
level engineers can earn salaries from £40,000 to £60,000. Salaries of Electrical
Engineers also depend on the job location and size of the company.
