MISSION: To enlist our nation’s most promising future leaders in the movement to eliminate educational inequity. EXPERIENCE: TFA recruits a diverse group of leaders with a record of achievement to work to expand educational opportunity, starting by teaching for two years in a low-income community. As a result of intensive training, support, and career development, these leaders increase their impact throughout and beyond their two year teaching commitment. A growing movement of alumni leaders, now more than 28,000 strong, works at every level in every sector to ensure that all children can receive an excellent education.

Educational Inequity

• Educational Inequity is our country’s most pressing social justice and civil rights issue.

• By the numbers:• 16 million children are growing up in poverty

• 9 year olds living in low-income households are 3 years behind their high-income peers

• 8% of children growing up in low-income communities are expected to graduate from college by the age of 24

• 80% of children growing up in high-income households are expected to graduate from college by the age of 24

LA, a case study: In the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan area, an estimated 70,900 students dropped out of high school from the Class of 2008*

If the number of dropouts in the region was reduced by 50%, following economic benefits in the region are likely to be:

– $575 million in increased earnings in the average year– $390 million in additional spending and $151 million in additional

investing during the average year– $1.8 billion in increased home sales by the midpoint of their careers

and $42 million in additional auto sales each year– 4,700 new jobs as a result of the additional spending and

investment– $772 million in increased gross regional product by the midpoint of

their careers– $79 million in increased tax revenue during the average year
