Leveraging Social Media To Grow Your Career

1. Describe Yourself: Include a clear description of yourself and your skills so recruiters can find you in your twitter bio and on LinkedIn. Describe what you do, your interests and organizations you're affiliated with.

2. Join in: Join in on twitter chats that are interesting to you 3. Follow people you admire: Create list of potential companies you admire on Twitter and keep

up with what they say. 4. Show Off (The Right Way): Don’t be afraid to show off work you’re proud of by sharing it on

your social channels. "Show your work" and give a behind the scenes look at your thinking behind projects. You can break our one project into several different posts by dissecting and explaining it. Also, for feedback from peers and people you admire on social.

5. Be Yourself: Show your personality: Have fun with what you say and don't be stuffy. 6. Have a Focus: Create and share content related to your industry and people/companies/

brands you admire. 7. Join communities: In addition to hopping in on twitter chats, look for LinkedIn groups, forums,

and Facebook groups to build relationships. (Hint: start with VCU Advertising!) 8. Look for answers: and if you have them, share: Quora can be such an awesome tool for this.

Have you done research for a very specific kind of client or niche industry? Showcase what you know by answering a question or starting a discussion. Are you curious about a certain company or job title, look for people talking about it. People love to share experiences. Take advantage of that.

9. Keep in touch: Check up on your lists and followers. Think about setting a schedule for yourself. (Example: everyday at Wednesday I will peek at my company list and look for something to retweet or engage with. Every Tuesday, I will ask someone I admire a question.) You don't need to make your job hunt social strategy public, it can be internal and appear seamless.
