Building on previous Careers’ Conventions, we have once again injected this annual gathering of Malta’s economy on campus with innovative ideas such as the recycled promotional material to be distributed throughout the event.

In an attempt to cater for the various range of academic fields found at the University of Malta as well as to show our support and encourage different careers paths, this year Careers’ Convention is hosting different companies from a wider variety of sectors including those with a scientific, communication and legal background amongst others.

As we strive to make this event bigger and stronger each year, we have also added content and variety to our online presence. Careers’ Convention is present

on several social networks including Facebook and LinkedIn and the event’s website www.careersconvention.com, includes a photo gallery and a blog allowing new content to be uploaded daily. This has all been done in an attempt to make the event more interactive as well as more approachable for students as well as companies, thus reaching out to a greater market.

This year’s magazine also continues to embrace the initiative of sustainability taken on by previous organisers, and is once again printed on recycled paper.

Careers’ Convention is Back! For the seventh consecutive year KSU and AIESEC present Careers’ Convention, now an established annual event. Firms, both privately owned as well as those from the public sector look forward to this event, as it is a one of a kind opportunity for them to meet tomorrow’s working force on campus.

PROFILE

The Kunsill tal-Istudenti Universitarji (University Students’ Council) is the oldest national student union in Europe. KSU was founded by Arturo Mercieca (later Chief Justice Sir Arturo Mercieca) in 1901, as the Comitato Permanente Universitario. The student union involves itself in student politics as well as national politics.

KSU represents all students attending the University, Junior College, the Institute of Health Care, Medical School and the Malta Centre of Restoration - on both a national and international level.

Although times have changed since the organization was founded, the aim of KSU remains unchanged. Malta has progressed greatly since 1901, but this does not reduce the importance of the contribution that each and every student can give to University and society in general. Life at University should not consist solely of studying, so KSU through its activities tries to be the ideal forum where every student can express his or her ideas regarding issues that are both academic or not so. KSU gives the student the opportunity to experience life on campus in a holistic manner.

WHY US?

Although in itself KSU is a dynamic organization and therefore it is open to change and debate, like other organizations, it finds its roots in a set of fundamental objectives on which the organisation was founded. Over the past 109 years, KSU has been working:

• To represent students in whatever issues concern them, whether it is on a national or international level;

• To serve as an official link between students and the relevant authorities;

• To achieve the democratization of education in Malta;

• To coordinate activities with other organisations;

• To cultivate students’ interest in the educational field, and in socio-political and cultural issues;

• To pressure authorities into assuring the highest level of quality in Higher Education. This year’s council will once again strive to be closer to the students through better channels of communication, ensure education of the highest quality and encourage stronger student participation with more accessibility to everyone. KSU will as always actively work to fulfil its commitment for better student representation in the fullest sense of the word.

KSU’s Executive Committee is pushing forth the renewed emphasis that University is not simply an academic domain where one specializes within a particular field or profession, but it is a forum for exchange of experiences between students as well as one of the ultimate steps which completes the student formation process.

Hungary – Becky Mercieca Balbi I have always loved to travel and explore new places but this Summer I didn’t just want to go abroad on holiday but to actually live and work abroad for some time. I had heard about AIESEC exchanges and because I was so determined to spend half of my summer in a foreign country I decided to apply for one.

When I applied I was very unsure about everything, whom I was going to be with and where I was going to go. The only thing I knew was that this was something that I really wanted. I believed that if I went on such an experience it would change the way I thought about everything and help me develop myself.

Before I knew it I found myself sitting on a plane going to Hungary. It was my first time travelling completely alone, I was unsure what to expect in Hungary and I was terrified. When I arrived in Hungary and saw 5 Hungarian AIESECers with a balloon with my name on it ready to great me immediately all my fears went away. This was going to be the biggest and most challenging experience of my life but I was ready I make the most out of it and enjoy it to the full.

My Exchange Experience

Before I went I was afraid because I thought I was going to be alone but in fact I was never alone. Apart from me there were 8 other AIESECers from all over the world who were in exactly the same situation as me. It was their first time on exchange and their first time in Hungary and we were working together.

I worked as an English teacher in a children’s camp in Kecskemet there I spent 4 weeks. The last 2 weeks I was free to travel around Hungary I spent most of the time in Budapest but also had the chance to visit the Czech Republic.

It was so easy to make new friends and I learnt so much not just about Hungary, but since I met people from everywhere I learnt about their countries too, I also learnt so much about myself.

I think if you have the chance to go on exchange you should definitely go. It might be a challenge, but that’s the good thing, because from it you will find out what you are capable of. You should always follow the fire burning inside you so go for it and make it happen!

China – Analise SammutFirst time I mentioned to my mother that I wanted to go on an exchange for around 6 weeks she wasn’t mighty pleased. However she figured that travelling to Europe (as was my first intention) won’t be disastrous and I could easily return home should the need arise.

Convincing both my parents that I would really, really, (yes, really!) love to go the Asian part of the world was something else all together. By and by, I applied and started the process to go on my exchange. This included interviews, review board, application forms and many, many hours spent browsing the online database looking for MY perfect experience, sending countless of e-mails and having Skype interviews at unholy hours with all those responsible for all the different opportunities that I thought might hit the spot.

My final choice of destination took me further East right into Beijing Peking Airport in China.

Sightseeing in Beijing is a must, with it’s wondrous Great Wall, Summer Palace, the thrilling Forbidden City and the modern Olympic Egg. Furthermore, after we finished our exchange some of us Exchange Participants (EPs) decided to visit Shanghai. We went 350m up the Pearl TV Tower and I was exhilarated to meet and talk to fellow Maltese(rs) at the enormous Shanghai World EXPO.

I went to China expecting various culture shocks. Even though I made my best to research possible difficulties, I just didn’t know what to which extent. I was expecting the incoherent use of the English language, spitting, squat toilets, pushing and shouting, hot-pots, scorpions and other street-food that when recognizable, might make one wish they didn’t succeed to do so.

However, nothing could prepare me for the shame caused by my lack of proficient use of chopsticks (although I have now overcome this ineptness) or how much the special, that is to say, ‘normal’ Western toilet will be a cause for laughter and celebratory photos. Nor how daunting it is to be faced with a classroom of sceptical students where language barrier is just the peak of the barrier that had to be broken and how rewarding it was to manage to do so. However, my biggest moment of triumph was seeing around 150 students dancing to Tunak Tunak, an AIESEC internationally-famous dance, which we taught them in the blistering sun, rehearsing for the weekly bonfires, when they showed off their new dance moves to their slightly confused parents.

Now, I miss the food. I miss the crazy traffic, the overwhelming amount of bicycles, the stressful shopping and the frenzy haggling. I miss the villagers curiosity, teaching us how to make tofu and planting rice in muddy waters. Singing the camp songs and climbing mountains, playing card and drinking games, watching movies and the rocking chair that I regret not trying to dismantle and pack in my luggage

Maybe I’m a bit home sick, but I just know that Beijing and the friends I made are waiting for me to go back. But more than that I know that l will surely meet the rest of the newest members of my AIESEC-family, somewhere, around the world.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain

PROFILE

The Employment & Training Corporation is the local agency which offers the services of EURES. EURES Malta has been up and running since 1st May 2004. Through the EURES network, ETC is now contributing to the provision of services offered throughout the EU. This is being done together with the other Public Employment Services (PESs) of the European Union and European Economic Area. While PESs in each country are structured differently, they all share the same basic task of contributing towards matching supply and demand on the labour market within the European Union through the provision of information, placement and active support services. EURES has a human network of more than 700 EURES advisers that are in daily contact with jobseeker and employers across Europe.

WHY US?

The ETC employs a number of trained EURES advisors. These have already been having appointments and meetings with hundreds of job seekers and a good number of employers. EURES advisors do not only give their clients advice on particular job opportunities, but they also furnish job seekers with useful information, on the conditions of workers in foreign countries, taxation, accommodation and other living conditions. Furthermore, the EURES office helps local and European employers to fill in their shortages.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

All vacancies are promoted on the EURES portal http://eures.europa.eu. The vacancies cover a wide range of occupations and include permanent and seasonal job opportunities. Each vacancy has information on how to apply and whom to contact. The contact may be either a EURES adviser, who will process the application or, in other cases, contact can be made directly with the employer. The EURES job search database is updated daily by the European employment services, and vacancy notices only stay on the system as long as they are current.

In this same website, one can also read about living and working conditions, search for learning opportunities and submit the CV online. The CV will be viewed by all registered employers around the EU.

There is a specific section for graduates under Jobseekers section which has a number of specific tips for job search and job mobility.

BACKGROUND OF FHS

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) (formerly The Institute of Health Care) was set up in 1988 specifically to develop courses in Health Care at tertiary level. For many years, the University of Malta provided education for future doctors, dentists and pharmacists, among others. However, it is recognised that health care involves the efforts of a multidisciplinary team of caring professionals who meet, discuss and plan together the health care needs of individuals and specific client groups.

Such a multidisciplinary team includes various professional categories, such as Nurses, Midwives, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Radiographers, Nutritionists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Environmental Health Officers, Podiatrists, Dieticians and Health Services Managers. All these professionals are responsible for the direct care of the patient or client.

The Faculty of Health Sciences provides the knowledge and skills for the professional carers so that they may contribute to effective decision making and policy setting. The Faculty is also

TESTIMONIALS

Name: Ruth CaruanaAge: 20Course of Studies: Bachelor of CommerceYear of Course: 3rd YearJoined Vodafone: 19 July 2010Position at Vodafone Malta: Part Time Marketing Trainee

At Vodafone Malta I work in the New Business Section in the Marketing Department while at University I am majoring in Marketing and Management. Consequently, I put into practice the theory I am studying and apply it in the Marketing Department with Vodafone. This provides me a more holistic perspective on both fronts.

I believe that working with an corporate company like Vodafone is a unique opportunity and an exciting work experience.

The atmosphere at Vodafone Malta is very friendly, in such a way that I instantly felt part of the organization. I found out that at Vodafone Malta they believe in every person’s potential and I was guided step by step. I was given responsibilities while it was evident that I was being trusted and believed in. This helped me build my confidence especially if, like me one lacks related work experience.

I simply love working at Vodafone! The work environment is dynamic, innovative and motivating, three essential factors that are making my work experience an amazing one.

My work experience is a truly helpful one! It has helped me grow and develop in many ways, both academically and personally. I am now more self-disciplined and independent while learning to be part of a team. I’m also given the opportunity to experience firsthand how a business organization operates. Moreover it has helped me gain more confidence in order to approach the challenges in life with a new zest be they assignments, exams or personal issues. I also feel it has helped me identify my strengths and has taken the saying “learning by doing” to a whole new level. Working in such a challenging environment has made me approach things differently, giving me a new focus on my chosen areas of study.

I would love to take up a permanent job at Vodafone Malta! I consider myself very lucky to have been given this opportunity at such a young age. I truly believe that Vodafone Malta can offer a very interesting and challenging career in various fields with great prospects for my future.

I would absolutely suggest other students to take this opportunity! If you are willing to commit the time and energy to learn, such an experience will provide you with the abilities and tools to excel in academia, personal life and career. It will also provide you with confidence in yourself and others. Such skills can only be gained by experience and will in essence give ‘power to you’.

Name: Mark CassarAge: 21Course of Studies: Bachelor of Commerce – Honors in MarketingYear of Course: 4th YearJoined Vodafone: 18 July 2010Position at Vodafone Malta: Part Time Marketing Trainee

I am currently working in the Marketing Department with Vodafone Malta. This experience is helping me have a better understanding about my area of studies and helps me develop particular skills such as better communicative skills.

I was instantly interested in working with Vodafone Malta because I believe it to be one of the largest companies in Malta. The company prides itself of certain qualities that take into consideration the needs of the customer and deals with particular situations in an efficient manner. The company is also able to fully contribute towards the environment through innovative ideas.

I have experienced a welcoming atmosphere when I commenced my employment with Vodafone. Moreover, I have been provided with adequate training through the assistance of supportive team members.

I love working with Vodafone Malta. This working opportunity is also a learning experience very much related to my area of studies. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the persons who both directly and indirectly have contributed to this learning process.

This working experience is providing me with the adequate know how on practicality towards the subject. I am able to view Marketing in a different perspective as I can now apply theory into practice.

I would be privileged if I had to be given a permanent place with Vodafone Malta because I’m sure that this would help me continue to develop further my expertise.

I would really like to recommend other students to try and gain more knowledge on the area of studies they are pursuing. Working experience with an established international company such as Vodafone Malta would be very beneficial in this regard.

I always felt the need for an absolutely natural, healthy drink on the local market, but never quite thought of becoming an entrepreneur

myself, until I came across a billboard offering the possibility of some EU funding for business start ups, I applied, got chosen and did a one year crash course on the subject. Following a detailed business plan, the bank granted us a loan of €250,000 – with my house as collateral - a huge but calculated risk!

The idea was to produce smoothies which were not only bottled, but which were also unpasteurized and with no additives, sugars or concentrates. So basically like putting fruit in a bottle, and delivering them all over Malta – an absolute first! Other business persons thought I was simply out of my mind and that logistically, due to the short shelf life, this was impossible.

To add insult to injury, I also wanted to be as environmentally friendly as possible, and as ethical as possible, because I firmly believe that if a business comes with no moral sympathy or

honorable code of behavior, then God help us all. As in fact happened in 2007 – the year we opened our smoochie business, there was a world economic crisis!

When something so catastrophic happens, you have to re-think and re-invent yourself even if you’ve just started and at smoochie we haven’t stopped being different ever since, in anything we do. We would like to move onto other healthy fresh products, bearing one thing in mind: that whatever we do and market, will always be absolutely healthy and sustainable and really good for you.

These past three years have been a brilliant experience. So I guess that if a mum with four kids and no business experience whatsoever could manage a business and become Malta’s favourite smoothie drink, then you can definitely do it too. Everything is possible, what you need is an extraordinary level of optimism, good planning and loads of good observation and listening skills, a good heart and ideas, ideas and ideas.

Matthew Bonett met up with Kenneth Mallia, Managing Director of Seamless to learn more about the long road to success when you’re a new entrepreneur looking to open up a business.

At first glance, I could tell that Mr Mallia is a very determined man, knowing exactly what he wants and ready to persevere to achieve it. Whilst interviewing him at his office at Tal-Handaq his excitement and enthusiasm was evident as he took a trip down memory lane telling me about his hard work to achieve what he has now built having started out only two years ago, his business that consists of making kitchen tops and wall cladding has now grown to needing nine full-time employees for it to be run. He not only has a shop in Santa Lucia, but is looking for new space in Qormi and has even gone as far as opening an office in Libya.

Mr Mallia is the perfect example of a young man looking to start a business and finding the right channels to do so. He is 22 years of age and in just two years has managed to build the business he has always wanted. He believes that the most important thing when deciding to start a business is to do the necessary research well.

He started out after gaining some experience working with his father and proceeded to successfully attend a course in electrical plumbing at MCAST.

Having been approached by a particular company to work for it three times, every time with a wage increase, and finding himself refusing the offer, he realized that it was the right time to start his own business and work hard to achieve his life-long dream – that of being able to generate his own income.“The fact that this company wanted to employ me so badly meant that others had faith in my capabilities, so all I needed was a little faith in myself!”

Mr Mallia went on to explain that he encountered various problems during his first months as an entrepreneur. He mentioned how one of the main problems was that of having to stop production twice when he was first starting out simply because the material that he uses for his work couldn’t be imported.

Mr Mallia mentioned his appreciation towards a particular friend who helped him at the beginning without looking to get paid for his efforts, and mentioned that this person now works in the Seamless Libya office. He also thanked his father for the support he has always given him.

When asked to pass on a message to students wishing to follow in his footsteps to start their own business, Mr Mallia said that the most important thing for an entrepreneur that is starting out is to focus on the satisfaction that your hard work renders and not at the profit.
