Flinders Uni Palaeontologist Review of Jurassic World

While there is a tendency to think of palaeontology as a highly specialised discipline, it is

actually very multidisciplinary, incorporating evidence from a range of different areas of

science, including biology, geology, physics, chemistry and maths. Palaeontologists are the

detectives of deep time, and the average palaeontologist is a jack of all trades adept in the

field, lab, museum and in front of a computer or school groups (or writing up blockbuster

movie reviews). Read world-renowned Flinders Palaeontologist, Professor John

Long's review on the new Jurassic World movie here.

HAVE YOU GOT THE SKILLS?

The Top 10 Skills Employers Look For

Anyone who doesn’t know that the job market for young people is tough has been living with

their head in the sand. But there are ways to make yourself more appealing to potential

employers and boost your chances in the job market.

We’re going to take a look at what employers want to see in their employees – the Top 10

Skills employers look for when assessing job applicants.

Your ATAR or OP isn’t enough

Sure, getting a great ATAR or OP is a good start, but it's just one part of the puzzle.

Your marks tell potential employers that you know how to study, but they don’t give any

indication of your other attributes. And those attributes, like flexibility, teamwork, and

determination, can mean a lot more to your future employer than your ATAR.

Your employer wants to know that you will work hard, learn quickly, and fit into their team.

That’s why you need to show them you have those skills.

Skills help you stand out from the crowd

The job market is competitive, and right now lots of people are applying for every job.

Which means employers need to look at what other skills you have to offer, what work

experience or voluntary jobs you’ve undertaken and assess you on a number of key qualities

to decide if you should get the job. Having a range of skills, and being able to prove you have

them, can help you stand out above the other candidates, and make it easy for the employer

to select you.

THERE ARE 10 KEY SKILLS EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR

Each job will have a range of specific skills they need, but in general these are the ones that

will help you stand out the most:

1. Communications

2. Flexibility

3. Determination

4. Team Work

5. Ability to Learn

6. Problem Solving

7. Loyalty

8. Resilience

9. Self-discipline

10. Tech Skills

In our next few posts we’ll delve into more detail about these top 10 skills employers are looking for, how you can brush up on them and how to get them across when you apply for jobs. You can follow along by signing up to the StudyWorkGrow Blog here, or on Facebook and Instagram.

7. University Early Offers

Receive a guaranteed spot at the Universities of your choice before you get your ATAR/OP. Embarking on a tertiary education can be a daunting process. You’ve got lots of decisions to make and lots on your plate, but an Early Offer from a university can help reduce the normal stresses of Year 12 and give you some space to breathe. It’s easy to apply for an early offer now, and depending on the university you apply to, you may be offered a guaranteed place before you’ve even started sitting your HSC exams. Sometimes there may be other conditions, as described by UAC – “Such offers are generally conditional on other requirements being met, such as successful completion of a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education or achievement of a specified minimum ATAR.” But some will even offer you a secure spot based on the expectation that you “maintain or exceed the level of academic performance indicated in your application and interview” (from the University of Wollongong). Am I eligible to apply? Are you excelling in your studies or sports, or have been recognised for your volunteering efforts or other extra-curricular activities? Then you may well be eligible to apply. If you’re still unsure, have a chat with your teachers or principal to discuss whether they think you’re able to apply and how they can help you complete your application. What happens next? Once you’ve decided that you are eligible to apply for an Early Offer and made up your mind that’s what you’d like to do, (why wouldn’t you if it could can guarantee you a spot at Uni before your exams?), there’s a few steps you need to take: 1. Go to your chosen University’s website 2. Search for the Early Offer (or similar) section 3. Take note of the closing date and make sure you take action well in advance. 4. Follow the prompts. Download any forms, or fill in the online form, speak to your

teachers if you need their input. Failing that, call the contact number and ask for help from the admissions department.

5. Submit the forms and any additional information required. 6. Keep up the good work at school and wait for an interview date or an email notifying

you of your successful application and guaranteeing you a place at University. You can find a great list of all your local universities on the MHSCareers Website – there are lots of Early Offer links there for you to look through as well. Find out more about Early Offers

9. Tertiary Studies Financial Assistance Advice Moving away from home to study at university is a big step and while Raymont is a great community to join and will greatly support your university studies, there are certainly many expenses involved. Some students will need assistance to be able to afford a place at Raymont and this article is designed to help provide some information to make this process easier. Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC) You might be surprised to know that advising QTAC of financial hardship is one of the first and most important things you need to do. QTAC have a program known as the Education Assistance Scheme that can help you if you have experienced circumstances that negatively affect your most recent studies. If you are eligible for EAS, you may get OP or rank adjustments that improve your chances of getting a university offer. If you are eligible for the Financial Hardship category, you may also get financial assistance from your chosen university including scholarships or bursaries. There are several Education Assistance Scheme Categories including:

Financial Hardship

Home Environment and Responsibilities

English Language Difficulty

Personal Illness or Disability

Educational Disruption The criteria for applying for the Financial Hardship category is available at the EAS Financial Hardship Category. Students are required to complete a cover sheet and return a description of their circumstances to QTAC for consideration. Details concerning household income related thresholds is also provided on the QTAC EAS website at: Income Thresholds It is important for students to complete this process as soon as possible as it can provide you with both an improved OP / rank position and if your circumstances meet the QTAC criteria, your student profile will be updated making you a higher priority for a range of university scholarships. Some universities such as UQ, will specifically want to see that you have been recognised as dealing with financial hardship through the QTAC / EAS Financial Hardship Scheme when considering you for one of their equity, access or financial hardship scholarships. Government Support You may also meet the criteria for a range of Government allowances including Youth Allowance, the Government Relocation Scholarship or ABSTUDY. Youth Allowance Youth Allowance is the provision of financial assistance to eligible students who are 24 or younger. There are a number of general Eligibility Criteria including:

18 to 24 and studying full time, or

16 to 24 and doing a full time Australian Apprenticeship, or

16 to 17 and independent or needing to live away from home to study. To be considered a student in full time study you must be undertaking 75% of a standard full time study load. At times it can be wise to reduce your load slightly from a standard four subject program to three subjects if they are particularly difficult, you are adjusting to a new environment or language or if you have been unwell. However, so long as you are doing 75% of a full-time study load, your Youth Allowance will not be impacted. If you are considered a Dependent student, your family’s income will be considered to determine if you are eligible for the Youth Allowance. Details about the Parental Income Test are available here. The criteria for being considered Independent is more demanding and more information can be found here.

The Youth Allowance rates are provided online by clicking Payment Rates. At present the maximum payment rate for a single student without children, living away from a parent’s home is $445.80 per fortnight. Of note, you can have a part time job and continue to receive Youth Allowance. However, your Youth Allowance will start to decline (reduced youth allowance) once your part time earnings exceed $437 per fortnight. The Department of Human Services provides an example of an 18 year old student who has moved from a small country town in Queensland to study in a city based university. The Government considers this student to still be dependent but eligible for both Youth Allowance and a Relocation Scholarship. More information is available here. If you are entitled to Youth Allowance, you could also find that you are entitled to a Government Relocation Scholarship. The criteria for this includes:

being a dependent student, or

have a special reason why you’re independent You must have to move to, or from, a regional or remote area within Australia to study and get at least $1 of:

Youth Allowance as a student

ABSTUDY Living Allowance, or

$4,459 in the first year you need to live away from home to study

be studying an approved course or doing an Australian Apprenticeship One of the seven awards covered by ABSTUDY is the Tertiary Award . It provides financial support to tertiary students and apprentices including living allowance, incidentals allowance, rent assistance, remote are allowance, pharmaceutical allowance and a relocation scholarship. The ABSTUDY Living Allowance is provided to eligible students and apprentices. You must meet the ABSTUDY Tertiary Award requirements and your Parental Income is assessed to determine if you are eligible for this allowance. Of note, some ABSTUDY allowances are not subject to a means test including the Incidentals Allowance and Relocation Allowance. More information is available at Income and Assets test (correct as at 1 August 2018). ABSTUDY Residential Costs Option The ABSTUDY Residential Costs Option can help eligible students manage the costs of living away from home to study.
