PROFILE OF PROFESSIONAL MBA CLASS ENTERING 2018
The Professional MBA curriculum consists of nine core courses and seven electives for a total of 48 credit hours (3 credits per course). Core courses strengthen the student’s business functional foundation with material that is relevant across a variety of industries. They incorporate real-life situations with research and theory. Using this knowledge, students apply what they learn immediately at their workplace and enhance future career opportunities.Students may design their individual plan of study through selecting electives based on interest and career goals or by choosing an area of specialization.
Electives allow students to gain greater depth in a specific area and are offered in multiple formats to provide additional learning and networking opportunities. Areas of specialization include finance, international business, innovation/entrepreneurship and marketing. To earn a specialization, students must take four specific electives in that area. Detailed information about the specializations and a list of currently offered electives may be found on the Professional MBA website under the Curriculum tab.An optional Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics is also available.
Optional short-term study abroad programs are offered two to three times a year as electives. advantage of all these options frequently. The program’s academic calendar consists of six 7-week terms and 14-week immersion courses over a calendar year with breaks between each 7-week term. Most courses offered in a 7-week term meet one night per week from 6 to 9 pm (using video conferencing) with some requiring additional Saturday class time on the USC Columbia campus. Immersion courses provide face-to-face instruction with the professor and typically occur over a 14-week timeframe with at least three Saturday class days on the USC Columbia campus. Eight of the nine core courses meet one night per week in a 7-week period with no Saturday classes. One core class, Competing through People (MGMT 770),
is taught in the immersion format of three Saturday classes at the Moore School of Business. Electives are offered in several formats – immersion, one night in a 7-week term and one night in a 7-week term with required Saturday classes. The Professional MBA program mixes great academics with real world applications. It has completely changed my way of thinking and approaching problems. Most physicians have minimal formal business education and are thrust into leadership roles in their practices, making decisions about finance, accounting and HR. This program offers tremendous opportunities to build a solid foundation of knowledge and develop meaningful relationships with other like-minded professionals.
