Career Majors Center Grove High School has identified seven Career Majors that equip and help motivate students to follow natural pathways beyond high school into careers and professions. In fact, each Career major has a post-secondary transition plan that leads students to an associate degree, apprenticeship or baccalaureate degree. The Academic Guide provides further information in the following section. Career Majors include: Business, Management and Marketing Education and Human Services Engineering, Technology, Manufacturing and Construction Fine Arts, Design and Communication Health Services Legal and Government Natural Sciences and Resource Management Students must take six courses in their chosen Career Major. A Career Task Force of administrators, teachers, counselors, parents and students explored career pathway programs around the country. As a result, the task force recommended developing a Career Majors and Pathway program at CGHS. They learned that providing students with Career Majors: Improves student achievement Improves students’ chances for college and workforce success Connects education with the world of work Smooths the transition into high school with the Keystone class Develops post-secondary options for students Offers specialized career academies Provides comprehensive guidance services and Increases internship and job shadowing opportunities Career Academies Within the Career Majors, CGHS offers two more specific career academies. Each is a small learning community of students within the larger high school with classes taught by a team of specially trained teachers from different disciplines. Classes provide college preparatory curriculum with a career theme. The academies form partnerships with employers and local colleges. In addition, each program offers the potential of dual high school and college credit. The Academy of Finance (AOF) is within the Business, Management, and Marketing Career Major. AOF students take regular courses along with specialized, rigorous financial and investment curriculum and receive guidance from a mentor working in a finance profession. They can participate in a paid summer internship between their junior/senior years and a college level class second semester of their senior year. Project Lead the Way is within the Engineering, Technology, Manufacturing and Construction Career Major. Students take challenging courses using project-based, hands-on experience to learn key elements and skills necessary for engineering and technology - related careers. College credit is available if students meet course requirements and pass the PLTW standardized exam. Page 14

Students must take six courses in their chosen Career Major. A Career Task Force of administrators, teachers, counselors, parents and students explored career pathway programs around the country. As a result, the task force recommended developing a Career Majors and Pathway program at CGHS. They learned that providing students with Career Majors: Improves student achievement Improves students’ chances for college and workforce success Connects education with the world of work Smooths the transition into high school with the Keystone class Develops post-secondary options for students Offers specialized career academies Provides comprehensive guidance services and Increases internship and job shadowing opportunities

Career Academies Within the Career Majors, CGHS offers two more specific career academies. Apprenticeship Options

General Apprentice Information: • An apprentice is a person who works for an employer while learning his or her chosen craft. They earn while they

learn. • An apprenticeship program contains two components: a classroom related instruction component and an on-the-

job training (OJT) component. • Apprenticeship programs must provide a minimum of 144 hours per year of classroom training and 2,000 hours of

on-the-job training. • Get paid for training: Usually the wage scale begins at 40% to 50 % of the journey-level worker’s rate and

increases progressively, and includes health and retirement benefits. • IVY Tech State College has developed an initiative in which you enroll in a joint apprenticeship-training program

and obtain an associate degree from Ivy Tech, with further opportunities to obtain a bachelors degree.

Trades and Programs

There are 14 building and construction trades that offer apprenticeships. For trades that interest you, check out the appropriate contact information under the Trades Contacts section.
