UNIVERSITY INFORMATION
Comparing Universities – Where to Start?
The relative merits of different universities are often the subject of much discussion and debate
for young people and their families. Where to start?
Things to Consider
Broaden your thinking about pathways
There are many pathways in tertiary study. Young people, for example, can move from school to
a certificate or Diploma with a tertiary provider, and then move to a Bachelor degree. This way
there is a qualification which can be used to get work part-way through the courses of study.
Looking at the “other side”, it is also good to think about the post-graduate programs which may
provide options after a degree course.
Convenience
How will you get to the university? Can you drive there? Will you have a car? What is public
transport like to the campus? If you have to move to go to the university – what are the logistics?
Is there family you could stay with? How will you support yourself if you are not living at
home? Think, also, about course flexibility. Are courses offered through a range of modes –
internal, external, online. Can you transfer from one mode to another during the course?
Research
The courses are the key. If you have identified a career area of interest – look broadly across
different universities to see what they offer. Don’t just assume you will go to a particular
university because it is recommended by someone else – satisfy yourself by researching on
university websites and consulting the Good Universities Guide, a reputable website which
compares universities on a range of criteria and also www.qilt.edu.au … and don’t forget to look
at course fees.
Overseas Study
If you are looking into study overseas – don’t forget that most Australian universities offer the
opportunities to do part of your course at an overseas university. Look into this!
Good Universities Guide
The Good Universities Guide is Australia’s premier resource on higher education, allowing students to
compare and identify the right course and provider to assist them in achieving their career goals.
The Good Universities Guide 2019 is the most comprehensive edition of the publication to date,
featuring:
New and updated institution ratings
Student experience and graduate outcome data
Entry requirements and ATAR cut-off scores
Financial assistance, fees and scholarships
Institution profiles by state

We’ve had some very exciting updates at Charles Sturt University (CSU) and we wanted to
make sure you have the latest information to pass on to your students.
Course updates
Bachelor of Business (Industry Professional Practice) – available at our Bathurst campus,
this is our most innovative business degree yet. Developed in close collaboration with
industry, we’ve created a unique course that sees students develop in-demand business
skills from day one.
Bachelor of Human Services (with specialisations) – in this new degree, students can
choose from a wide range of specialisations including Australian Indigenous Welfare,
Child and Adolescent Welfare, Disability, Gerontology and Healthy Ageing, Mental
Health and Addiction, Multicultural Welfare and Sustainable Community Development.
Available at our Port Macquarie campus and online.
Bachelor of Public Safety and Security – now available at our Port Macquarie campus
and online, this degree prepares students who are interested in joining the NSW Police
Force.
Bachelor of Social Work – this degree is ideal for students who are dedicated to pursuing
social justice and human rights, becoming a force for social change in their community.
Available online and at our Dubbo, Port Macquarie and Wagga Wagga campuses.
New admission pathway for our communication and creative industries degrees
While important, a student’s ATAR/VCE doesn’t always reflect their potential for a successful
career. That’s why we’ve designed our individual assessment program, which allows us to make
conditional offers (based on completion of the HSC/VCE) to future students anytime based on an
interview, audition or portfolio review.
Who is eligible?
Eligible Year 12 students are those who:
are interested in acting, advertising, animation, art, design, journalism, photography,
public relations, radio, sound design, television or theatre media
pass a CSU assessment evaluating their passion, skill and ability.
How can students apply?
Students can apply by booking an interview with the School of Communication and Creative
Industries.
Successful students will receive a conditional offer by email (based on completion of the
HSC/VCE) after their interview/audition. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their
application.
CSU’s accommodation prices have dropped
CSU has ensured that living on campus is a viable option for as many of our students as possible
by reducing our accommodation prices. We’ve got a broad range of accommodation and catering
options, plus a guaranteed place for all first-year students. Take a look.

US Undergraduate Applications 2018-19 SAT Testing Dates - The SAT and ACT Standardised
Tests
As part of the US undergraduate application requirement to most four year institutions, students are
required to submit a standardised test score, either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or American
College Test (ACT), both of which are administered privately and outside of school hours. Both tests
are assessing competencies in comprehensive reading and writing and maths – the ACT also has a
testing section on science which does require knowledge in the subject matter, however, many of the
questions are analysis and interpretation based. Both tests have an optional writing component required
for admission purposes by some institutions. Read further details here:

The UMAT Admissions Test
is changing in 2019.
For students intending to sit the UMAT in 2019 for entry to university in 2020, the test is changing.
2018 will be the final year for students to sit the UMAT. After 2018 it will be replaced by a new
test, the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test).
What does this mean for students?
If your students sat the UMAT in July 2018 nothing has changed. They should continue to follow
the steps outline on the UMAT website: umat.acer.edu.au
Students who are planning to sit the UMAT in 2019, will instead need to register for and sit the
UCAT.
Has the test changed?
Yes, the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) is a 2-hour computer-based test. Candidates
will sit the test at Pearson VUE test centres located in Australia, New Zealand and some overseas
centres.
The UCAT will be offered on a choice of dates throughout the month of July, rather than on one
single date.
Why have we moved to this new test?
As a computer-based test, the UCAT is an efficient and secure process. It has the additional
advantages of offering candidates the convenience of a choice of dates and a wider range of test
centres.
The UCAT is a well-established and internationally respected test used widely in the UK since
2006 (under the name UKCAT) to select students for admission to medicine and dentistry
courses at the majority of UK universities. For information about UKCAT go to:
www.ukcat.ac.uk
The test assesses a range of abilities identified as important by university medical and dental
schools for success in their programmes or courses, and later as a clinician.
What do students need to do now?
If your students sat the UMAT in July 2018, nothing has changed. They should continue to
follow the steps outline on the UMAT website: umat.acer.edu.au
Students who will be sitting the test in 2019 for entry to university in 2020, should visit the
UCAT website for full details on the new test.
