Welcome

Choosing the right course is a very difficult decision that will affect the rest of your life. At the moment, you may have different options to consider, perhaps even the offer of a place on a course at another college or university. We also understand that you might be nervous about starting college because it is a big step if you are leaving school, have been out of education, or are considering changing your career path.

Whatever your situation, we know that you have a lot to think about and hope this guide will give you information on how to prepare for studying at college.

There are so many reasons to study with us at Cardonald, but the main one is that we have an excellent reputation for looking after our students and helping them get the most out of their studies. This strong relationship begins now, and we actively encourage you to keep in touch with us right up to the point your course begins.

If you have any questions or concerns, one of our Student Advisers in the Information and Advice Centre will be happy to help. Further information on making an appointment is available in this guide.

We you are delighted you chose Cardonald College Glasgow and look forward to seeing you soon.

Susan H WalshPrincipal and Chief Executive

Thank you for applying to Cardonald College Glasgow.

I hope that you are looking forward to joining us in the coming months.

I’ve been offered a place. What willhappen next? Now that you have been offered a conditional or unconditional place at Cardonald College Glasgow, this guide will give you information on what to expect between now and the start of your course. The next stage will be dependent on the type of offer you have received from the College. If you have been given an unconditional offer, your place at the College is secure, based upon the course attracting a sufficient number of students. We will be in touch in August with the date of your induction.

A conditional offer means that you may be waiting on your exam results or we may need to obtain references before we can offer you place. If you’re applying for a course starting in August, make sure you contact one of our administrators as soon as you get your exam results in August. Even if you don’t get the results that you are expecting, we can offer advice on other suitable options.

If you have a disability or additional support need of any kind please contact the Equality and Support team if you have not already done so. We will arrange a meeting with you to discuss ways in which we can provide extra support to give you the best possible chance of achieving success at college.

Remember, if you have any doubts or concerns at any stage, we are here to help you and will be delighted to answers your queries via email, phone, or in person.

Our top tips on preparing for college• Arrange your bursary or student loan as soon as possible so that you know exactly how much you’ll get and when you’ll get paid. Check out all you need to know about student finance and funding on the College website.

• Think about getting a part-time job. Even better, try and get one related to the subject you will be studying at college. We can give you information on finding jobs and making applications.

• Think about why you’re doing your chosen course and your plans for the future - students with clear goals are most likely to succeed. If you’re unsure, arrange a careers guidance interview.

• If you have any concerns about coping with your course, arrange to see someone in Equality and Support about extra help.

The Information and Advice Centre is located in the College entrance and is open 8.45am to 4.50pm Monday to Friday and 9:30am to 4.30pm on Wednesdays. To make an appointment, call 0141 272 3332.

The Equality and Support Unit is located on the first floor opposite the cash machine and is open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.50pm. To make an appointment, call 0141 272 3377.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) occupies most of the second floor of the tower block. You can come for a look around before your course starts. We are open Monday to Friday throughout the summer and staff will be happy to show you around or answer any questions you may have.

Once you have started at the College you will find that the LRC has lots of useful resources and equipment to help you with your work; over 90 PCs, all with internet access and Microsoft Office. If you are using any specialist software in the classroom, you will be able to get further practice in the LRC. You can also print and photocopy in both black and white and colour.

The LRC houses a lending collection of over 30,000 books, journals and DVDs. More and more of our information is available online, so you will have access to thousands of eBooks, journals, newspapers and databases from the classroom, the LRC or home.

“The LRC was refurbished last summer and is bright and well organised. Students f ind it a great place to study. We have group tables where you can work with classmates and quieter single study desks for when you need to concentrate. We look forward to meeting our new students in August.”

Welcome to theFaculty for Access and Continuing LearningContinuing Learning

Our faculty, like the rest of the College, is committed to providing equal opportunities for all students and aims to create conditions where everyone is treated with respect and is not subjected to discrimination. Our teaching staff will make you feel very welcome and will encourage you and your classmates to work together and become a team.

We actively encourage our students to take part in all aspects of college life and make friends with both students and staff. Many of our students are members of the Student Representative Council or have joined forums such as the Equality Diversity and Inclusion Forum. These groups give students a voice and can help to change the College for students and staff.

“I’ve been at Cardonald since September 2009, however, this isn’t my first time at the College. I studied here for eight years before I got a job. When I heard about the ‘Get Involved’ course, I decided to come back to college because I wanted to learn new skills and make new friends. “My course is really varied and my favourite classes are cookery, drama and enterprise, where I learn skills that I can use in my everyday life. In my enterprise class, we are working on a project helping animals at the local SSPCA Cat and Dog Home. We’re collecting food for the animals by promoting the project to other students and staff. This isn’t the first fundraising project we’ve done, at Christmas we held a Winterfair to raise money for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.”

Joseph Graham, Get Involved student

“If you are studying your Highers, Intermediates, Social Sciences, ESOL or one of our Supported Learning courses, welcome to the Faculty for Access and Continuing Learning. I’m Margaret Gilroy, the faculty head for the area.

I manage the faculty and much of my time is spent in meetings, therefore you may not see me regularly. You will mostly be in contact with your head of school, senior lecturers and lecturers. Once you start your course, you will also be appointed a personal development tutor. However, if you have any questions before you start, please contact one of our faculty administrators.”

To make your time at Cardonald both enjoyable and valuable, all of our courses are taught by friendly staff who have a wealth of experience. You will be learning in our purpose-built facilities, which include a Childcare suite that looks and feels like a nursery and Health Care classrooms that have been based on hospital rooms.

Whether your course is a six month Access programme or a two year HND, you will be taught the skills needed to progress onto further study at college or university. Many of our HNC/D courses offer direct entry into 1st, 2nd and 3rd year of courses at universities across the country.

On completing their course, our students are equipped with the experience and knowledge that employers are seeking and many move directly into employment

or onto a university degree.

“I’ve recently finished studying hairdressing at Cardonald and loved it. During my time at college I had the opportunity to take part in two hairdressing competitions. I won the ‘Total Look’ competition and came second in the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists’ (AHT) National Student Hairdressing Competition, which was a national event.

“I’m about to start working at the Rainbow Room hair salon and wouldn’t have got the job without my course and the support from my lecturers.”

Every course is taught by highly-experienced and friendly staff who are here to help you get the most out of your time at Cardonald. Our workshops are equipped with the latest technology and are often used by designers such as Iona Crawford who do not have their own studio space.

If you’re starting a one year NQ course, you’ll learn the basic techniques and skills needed to progress onto an advanced level HNC/D course. Those of you starting an Access programme in January will have a similar experience.

Many of our HNC/D courses offer articulation into 1st, 2nd and, sometimes, 3rd year of courses at universities and art schools across the UK.

We also deliver a first degree in Graphic Design in partnership with the University

of the West of Scotland. However, if you don’t fancy a few more years studying, many of our former HNC/D from courses like Television and Graphic Design, have gone straight into great jobs after leaving Cardonald.

“I have been at Cardonald for over 10 years and it’s a wonderful place to work; mostly due to the students I have met. My aim is to make English a subject people will enjoy, as well as helping students to achieve their qualification, of course!

“Through my role, I have seen many students fulfil their potential and go on to university, voluntary work or move into their chosen careers. Without doubt, Cardonald is a great place to work and a great place to study.”

Claire Donaghey, Head of School of Journalism, Media and Communications

During your time with us, you’ll be taught by experienced and friendly lecturers who have long-standing links with industry, employers and universities. These links enable many of our students to move straight from college into a job or to join a university course in 1st, 2nd or even 3rd year.

We know from experience that you will be coming to Cardonald to enhance your employability, so several of our courses offer work placements that give you the chance to work in a real-life office, travel or construction environment.

All of our courses, from Business Management to Gas and Plumbing, are taught at our refurbished campus, where the latest equipment and technology has

been installed. Our experience and facilities have helped us gain Gas Safe, Oracle, Cisco, and SAGE accreditation.

“Cardonald is a great place to study as the teaching staff are excellent and the facilities are great too. You feel like you’re working in a real- life situation not in a class room. My course is run jointly by Cardonald and Scottish Power and has offer me a great opportunity to start a career as an electrician.”
