Welcome to New
Section Members
Dear Section Members: Happy (belated) 2015. More importantly, Happy Anniversary.
That’s right – Happy Anniversary! The Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section is celebrating 40 years. That is 40 years of promoting and advancing
cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy practice, education and research. I hope you will come and celebrate with us at the Combined
Sections Meeting (CSM) 2015 in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 4-7. As usual, the educational and networking opportunities are diverse and I refer
everyone to the CSM website at http://www.apta.org/CSM/. I invite you to attend our business meeting which will be held at 6:30 pm on
Friday, February 6th in the JW Marriott–White River Ballroom I.
Please feel free to introduce yourselves and start a dialogue with me and other CVP section leaders. We are always looking for membership input. It
is through strong team work that our Section will continue to grow and prosper in the future.
See you in Indianapolis.
Cheers, Daniel Malone PT, PhD, CCS President

Doug Slick started his PTA career after 30 years as a performing musician in
the Philadelphia area. His initial education was a BS in Music Performance
from University of the Arts. With the economy downturn in 2008, a new career
was needed and pursuing a PTA degree made more economic sense than
redoing a BS for the science credits in the pursuit of a DPT. In 2011 Doug
graduated from Lehigh Community College and started working for Main Line
Health, Inc where he started working as an aide while in school. Doug says that
as both an aide and a PTA he has travelled to various acute care, outpatient,
SNF, homecare, and acute rehab facilities and generally works as a fill-in for
absent staff or to supplement when caseloads are heavy.
Doug says that his interest in CVP started serendipitously during his first assignment as a PTA. He was working at a hospital just starting an LVAD program. “I fell into the chance to work with LVAD patients in the CTICU and step-down unit …and was fascinated with the LVAD process and the other cardiac patients I got to work with in that setting.” His variety of work settings, sometimes following a patient from acute care through homecare has led to some strong beliefs about educating patients. Most cardiac intervention is not elective, he observes, and the patient/family are traumatized, struggling to process what has happened. It is a very difficult environment to learn something detailed like a cardiac rehab program. When in their home he finds that patients are more relaxed and often deny ever receiving any education in sternal precautions even though he spent two or three sessions discussing it with them in acute care. “Reinforcement of behaviors we are trying to instill in these patients is very important all along the process to help them have a good
outcome,” he says. When not working, Doug likes outdoor activities like biking, hiking, fly fishing, and skiing. An avid sports fans, he follows the Philly teams and is also a fan of international soccer, English Premier League, Champions League, World Cup, etc. Asked about his next dream accomplishment he responds, “I always have personal goals, but I don’t think I really have a bucket list. I’m livin’ the dream now!”
Please send in names of CV&P Section Members that you think should be profiled. We are looking for all types of members to be profiled, not just someone who has published a lot or has a
recognizable name. All of our section members do important work for our profession and we want to show that off. Send the name and contact info to [email protected].

As a new feature of the CVP Section newsletter, we will highlight information about some of the CVP Advanced Practice Residents and Fellows around the country.
Erinn Barker PT, DPT
Erinn is currently a cardiopulmonary resident at Duke University. She received her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Weber State University in Ogden, UT in
2008. She then earned her DPT from the University of Utah in 2012.
Erinn reports that she didn’t not quite know what she wanted to do with her career when she graduated with her DPT. She did know that she liked being in the ICU.
Her first job out of PT school was working in the ICU at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, NV. She states, “I was able to see so much there! The doctors were all very
helpful and the staff was all very knowledgeable about different pathologies and treatment courses.” Erinn stated that because Las Vegas is in the middle of the
desert and isn’t part of a greater metropolitan area, the complicated patient cases tend to get shipped to San Diego/LA, Salt Lake City, Denver or Phoenix where there
are more treatment options available.
She decided that in order for her to learn and grow, she would leave Las Vegas for the opportunity to continue to challenge my knowledge and skills at Duke University. She is enjoying her residency and is
learning a lot.

Periodically people ask how do I join the listserv. Here is the process:
Go to www.yahoo.com
On the page somewhere you will find the heading “groups.” Currently it
is on the top left side of the homepage. It used to be in the left margin
area so they do move it from time to time. It will always be in the list of
other icons/pages you can click on. Click on the “groups” link.
Once on the groups page, search for Cardiovascular and Pulmonary
Physical Therapy. Our section’s page should then come up. Click on
the link to our listserv.
You will then have to click on ask for permission to join. This is a
monitored group so that we can try to keep it to people really interested
in this area and not people that want to market to all of us.
Within 1-3 days your approval will be granted and you are then free to
post or respond to the listserv.
Don’t get disappointed if it is quiet when you first join. The listserv tends
to have period of quiet and then someone will post a question and there
will be a flurry of activity for a few days, then go quiet again.
