Use this when you don’t know the name of a book or an author.
Title Card
Title Card
•Use this when you know the title of the book, but NOT the author.
Author Card
Author Card
•Use this when you know the name of the book, but NOT the title.
•Use this when you want to find out if the author wrote more books that you might enjoy.
Remember:
The only thing that is different is the first line of the card!
Using the Catalog Drawer
2. Open the drawer and search for the title of the book.
1. Find the drawer marked with the first letter of the title, of the book you would like to find.
(Drawers are marked with letters and arranged
alphabetically).
When looking for a Title of a book-ignore the first word in the title, if it is “The”, “A”, or “An”.
• The Big Game- look under “B” • A Wrinkle in Time – look under “W”• An Octopus for Molly- look under “O”
3. Find the Call Number on the left corner: E = Easy F = Fiction
857.9 = Nonfiction
4. Locate your book!
*Fiction books are in ABC order.*Nonfiction books are in number order, grouped
by subject.
Subject and Author Cards
• Follow the same procedure for author and subject searches.
• Search for an author by finding the drawer marked with the first letter of the author's last name.
• For biography, search by the famous person’s last name.
Your teacher has assigned the whole class a research project on dolphins. Are there enough books in the library for all 13 of you?

You want to look up The Purple Monster in Third Grade and find out who the author is.
Title Card
One of your favorite authors is Gary Slug. You have read The Slimy Trail and Sammy Gets Lost, but you want to find another book by the same author.
