One of the most common and annoying problems car owners contend with are vibrations. For drivers who have owned a car long enough, vibrations can become commonplace, especially with aging vehicles. Although it is normal, there are instances when vibrations cause major concerns. This situation can become extremely frightening for people who do not have a clue as to what is wrong with the vehicle. Knowing what causes cars to vibrate and what it means for the vehicle and passenger can save people from a lot of stress and ensure safety.

Engine Problems

There are times when a shake or a shudder will emanate from the engine compartment. If this is the case, it is possible that there is an air, fuel, or spark issue that is hindering the vehicle from running smoothly. A car that jerks when accelerating or shakes at certain speeds are also symptoms of engine related problems. Getting a new set of spark plugs could solve this issue. It will also help to have the spark plug connection checked just in case.

Axle

Bent axles are also a common cause of shuddering. When vibrations occur or worsen every time the vehicle accelerates, there is a very good chance that the axles are damaged. Having them checked is the best way to address the problem. Driveshafts, the rapidly spinning component of the car that transfers engine power to the rear axles and wheels, also cause shaking when bent. Having those inspected helps a lot in determining the cause of unwanted vibrations.

Wheels and Tyres

Often times, faulty tyres or defective wheels cause cars to wobble or shake. Tyre balance, separated treads, and uneven tyre wear are some of the reasons that contribute to unwanted rattles and rolls. If tyres are not the problem, check the wheels. Potholes and sloppy repair work not only cause jerking, they can be potentially hazardous for drivers and passengers as well.

These are just some of the reasons cars vibrate. Other things may cause vehicles to shake or shudder. If drivers feel uncertain, it is always better to seek help from an able mechanic or have the car inspected.
