LAST winter, the joke was on us. Misled by the unusually snowy October,

we eagerly awaited the Olympics — only to have our jaws drop when wet, balmy conditions hit Metro Vancouver.

That was thanks in part to El Niño, but this year his female counterpart La Niña could be causing the exact opposite to happen.

“There’s something very connected between La Niña and the fact that Vancouver seems to have colder and snowier and therefore longer winters,” says David Phillips, climatologist from Environment Canada speaking on the phone from Toronto.

La Niña is a phenomenon that results in the cooling of waters in the eastern and central Pacifi c Ocean. There have been 18 La Niña since 1950 and 13 of them have resulted in cooler weather, according to Phillips.

“Weather is never guaranteed, it’s a crap shoot here in Canada. But the dice are loaded to give you a colder than normal winter,” says Phillips.

As per usual, there will be plenty of moisture and precipitation this winter but because it’s a La Niña year that rain will fi nd itself head to head with arctic winds.

“It’s like a war that breaks out,” says Phillips.

“You have that western Pacifi c system thattends to be milder and soggy wet and it bumps into that cold air and it’s sort of like who is stronger? Does the cold air get kicked out? Wellthen you might get a few fl urries and it turnsto rain but if the cold air is like the bully in the playground, if it just sits there and won’tbudge, boy you can be just buried in snow.”

Typically, December and January are Metro Vancouver’s snowiest months averaging ataround 16 centimeters each. Still, there’s no need to expect lengthy bouts of snow.

AN annual physical is a good idea for each member of your family, including your family vehicle.

Car Care Canada recommends not waiting for that fi rst cold snap to book an appointment with your service technician to install your winter tires, have your battery, antifreeze, fuel and ignition systems, headlights and other key components checked.Winter tires are a must

Don’t be caught off guard by the fi rst snowstorm or a quick drop in temperature! The rubber compound of a winter tire is relatively soft, so it retains its elasticity for much longer. Check your tire treads and pressure, which are crucial when driving on ice and snow. Cooling system

As strange as it sounds, your cooling system is one of the most important things to watch in your vehicle during the wintertime. There are two things — the concentration of coolant, and the amount. In most parts of Canada, a 50/50 mix of coolant and water keeps the coolant from freezing, lubricates the water pump, and protects the cooling system from corrosion. In very cold areas, it may be necessary to increase the concentration of coolant, but never more than 70 per cent coolant to 30 per cent water. Also, coolant should be fl ushed and refi lled at least every two years in most vehicles.Heaters, defrosters and wipers

Wiper blades that are cracked or torn, or that chatter, streak and don’t properly clean your windshield should be replaced. Some

manufacturers offer special winter blades that have a rubber boot covering the arm assembly to keep snow and ice out. When changing the blades, have the windshield wiper system nozzles cleaned and adjusted if necessary, and check the windshield washer reservoir in case it needs fl uid.Check battery and charging system for optimum performance

Very cold temperatures will reduce a vehicle’s

battery power so it’s important to keep the connections clean, tight and corrosion-free. Unfortunately, batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail completely. If your vehicle’s battery is more than three years old, it’s wise to replace it. When choosing a replacement, make sure the new one has adequate capacity for your exact make and model.Change your oil

Check the owner’s manual to see if your conditions are considered “severe” — you drive in stop-and-go traffi c, in mountainous terrain, or other conditions that increase wear and tear on your vehicle. If so, have the oil changed accordingly, usually every 5,000-8,000 kilometres. Have your automotive service technician check the fuel, air and transmission fi lters at the same time. Always consult your vehicle’s owner’s manual.Keep your gas tank at least half full

This tip limits condensation in your tank and reduces gas-line freezing. Adding a little gas-line antifreeze every second fi ll-up will also help prevent gas-line freezing. If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter sets in. Winter magnifi es existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. A routinetune-up will restore a vehicle back to its normal operating state, and contribute to the overall effi ciency of the engine and emissions system.Check the brakes

This braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item and brakes are a normal wear item that sooner or later will need to be replaced.Check the exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks

Leaks can be especially dangerous during winter when windows are closed. Regular exhaust system checks are critical to maintain a safe vehicle.Pack an emergency kit

This is crucial if you get stranded, especially during a storm. Include an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, fl ashlight, fl ares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication.

“You’ll always get thesePacifi c systems which will kick out the cold air and it will rain and it will be a soppy wet kind of a situation,” says Phillips.

“It’s not as if the snow will arrive at Christmas and leaveat Easter.”

Either way, it’s best to be prepared and that means getting a shovel, salt, tire chains and whatever else youmight need.

“The season is very short but there’s no question about it — for drivers, forpedestrians, for homeowners, you’re not geared to it like the rest of Canadians. Somepeople don’t even own snow shovels, they just wait for the snow to melt.”

From page 22

Don’t wait for the snow to fall

THE North Shore’s roadways are about to get hit by old man winter, and motorists should be getting ready by changing over to winter tires or trying to decide if winter tires are right for them.

The Rubber Association of Canada, which represents tire makers, wants Canadian drivers to know that today’s winter tires offer motorists signifi cant traction and handling advantages in all cold weather driving compared to all-season or conventional summer tires.

They do this because their rubber compounds are designed to maintain their elasticity at temperatures as cold as -30C and lower.

This superior fl exibility, which kicks in when temperatures fall below 7C, means drivers gain greater traction and control, particularly when cornering or braking.

“Advances in winter technology are causing more drivers to make the switch to winter tires with each passing year, and this is good news from a safety perspective because winter tires defi nitely enhance driver control”, said Glenn Maidment, president of the association, in a release.

“The question motorists should be asking today is whether winter tires are right for them and, if so, which winter tire is best suited to their specifi c driving patterns.

Consumers can get the answers they need about winter tires by visiting

betiresmart.ca or by talking to a tire professional.”

All-season tires can provide safe all-weather performance, but drivers need to know that winter tires deliver up to 50 per cent more winter traction.

Motorists are also advised to use winter tires in all wheel positions. Installing winter tires on only the front or rear axle positions can create a serious traction imbalance that can result in loss of control, particularly when cornering or braking or making an avoidance manoeuvre.

When shopping for winter tires, consumers should be mindful of the universal symbol of a true winter tire, the “three-peak mountain snowfl ake”, which is stamped on the sidewall.

Tires with this distinctive symbol meet or exceed snow traction performance established by the tire industry.

Another winter tire shopping tip is to have your tires installed earlier rather than later at your local tire retailer to avoid long line-ups.

Another winter driving safety essential is proper tire infl ation, which is harder to maintain in winter because of greater temperature fl uctuations.

Every fi ve-degree decrease in temperature results in a loss of about one psi in air pressure.

A temperature drop of 15 degrees, for example, which can happen frequently in winter, typically results in 10 per cent under-infl ation.

Under-infl ated tires have a smaller

footprint, which weakens their grip. The result is diminished braking and handling characteristics, along with higher fuel bills due to increased rolling resistance.

Tire makers recommend that motorists measure and, if necessary, adjust their tire pressures to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation once a month using a reliable tire gauge.

Visual inspections are no substitute for a proper gauge. Tires can be under-infl ated by as much as 25 per cent and still appear visually to be properly infl ated.

Winter tire owners should also be aware that excessive tread wear can diminish traction. Tread depth should always be inspected at the start of the winter driving season. A visit to tire retailer will tell drivers if their tires are overly worn. When deciding what tires to install, ask yourself the following questions:■ Do I drive on icy or snowy roads?■ Do I have to use your vehicle every day, regardless of the weather?■ Do I drive off main streets and roads in winter?■ Do I drive early in the morning or late at night in winter?■ Do I drive nearly the same speed regardless of the temperature?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, winter tires may be right for you.

Talk to your tire dealer about your driving habits and what kind of conditions you drive in and what kind of winter tires are best suited for you.

WHILE we are not quite into full winter weather, the BCAA Traffi c Safety Foundation says that there are many changes at this time of year that drivers and pedestrians need to be aware of, especially when it comes to the changing season and the end of Daylight Savings Time.

“Fall is the time of year when we experience changes in the weather that make road use more dangerous,” says Allan Lamb, executive director of the foundation, in a release.

“Several factors come into play with traffi c safety at this time of year. Traffi c is heavier because more people choose to drive their cars in colder weather. The time change affects our ability to focus during the drive home

commute. Winter clothing tends to be dark coloured and not easily seen during darker days. Lower temperatures and less sun make road conditions slippery and wet forcing drivers to adjust their driving after several months of driving on dry roads.”

A week after Halloween most communities in B.C. will turn their clocks back one hour when Daylight Savings Time comes to an end. Time changes refl ect a change in

social clocks not biological ones and studies show that our circadian rhythms (body clocks) are not good at adjusting to time changes naturally.

We may feel like we’ve gained an extra hour of sleep, but by the end of the fi rst Monday after the time change, we are feeling tired.

Fatigue can impair brain and body functions

WINTER can be a drag. Monitor your fatigue level, slow down and plan for shorter daylight hours.

FOR the fi fth year running, North Vancouver’s DeRosa Automotive is helping stop hunger by helping to stop your car.

Throughout the month of November, bring in a full bag of food or toiletries to DeRosa and leave with a free brake inspection and brand new, free, Premium Raybestos brake pads or shoes, courtesy of Lordco Auto Parts.

All of the donated goods will be passed on to the Harvest Project, the North Shore non-profi t group that helps individuals and families get back on their feet when going through tough times. Last year, the Harvest Project distributed more than 5,500 food hampers, 4,300 emergency food bags and 10,426 items of clothing, as well as thousands of hours of job coaching and counseling.

Suggested bag-stuffers include canned fruits and vegetables, canned meat and fi sh, potatoes, soups, dry pasta, pasta sauces, rice, chocolate, coffee, tea, juice, cereal, diapers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors and deodorant.

If you need new brakes anyway, why not go and take advantage of the roughly $100 to $150 savings while also giving your neighbours a helping hand? What’s not included in the deal — no fi ne print here — is the labour for any additional servicing of rotors or calipers, and any other parts or fl uids that need replacing.

TUNE UP AND DRIVE

WE often think of summer as being prime time for road trips — but with a little preparation, a frosty escape is totally within reach.

Whether it’s a Big Whiteski trip or a Banff adventure your heart desires, use thefollowing tips from BCAA to ensure a safe and successful journey. ■ Check weather and traffi c reports before you take off.Try www.weatheroffi ce.gc.caand www.drivebc.ca.■ Get a full service tune-up for your vehicle at least a week or two before your trip.■ Place dedicated snow tires on all four wheels — chainsare for short term use inemergency situations.■ Ensure that your coolant isable to withstand -35 degreeCelsius temperatures.■ Have a repair shop testyour battery if it’s more than two years old. As batteries getolder, the chances of failure increase, especially in colder temperatures. ■ See that your wipers andwashers are up to date. Replace worn or streakingwiper blades and consider upgrading to winter wipers ifyou’re going to be driving in snowy conditions. Make sure the washer bottle is topped upwith anti-icing solution. ■ Pack a survival kit with afl ashlight, fi rst aid supplies, food and drinks, emergency blankets and a cellphone ■ Don’t forget the fun factor. Road trips can be tedious, especially for children. Be sure to pack games or movies if youhave a portable DVD player.

Keep your big family road trip out of the ditch

as much as alcohol does. A groggy driver is a dangerous driver and groggy pedestrians can easily put themselves at risk.

Studies indicate that the lack of daylight during the evening commute home often sees an increased number of traffi c related deaths and serious injuries.

The BCAA Traffi c Safety Foundation offers some suggestions to help drivers and pedestrians stay safe:

For drivers■ Slow down — The faster you travel the longer it will take to stop. Give yourself more time to react to a situation by driving 10 km/h

slower and allow more time to reach your destination.■ Reduce speed in rain — Heavy rains after a prolonged dry spell tend to bring oil to the surface of the road and create large pools making roads slick and making vehicles susceptible to hydroplaning. ■ Stop — Come to a full stop at designated intersections then proceed slowly.■ Slippery road surfaces — Fallen leaves retain large amounts of water and can create a slippery surface that can be just as treacherous as patches of ice. Drive slowly through them and avoid hard or panic braking.■ Turn your headlights on — most daytime running light

systems don’t automatically illuminate the taillights.■ Windows — Wipe away snow or frost, defrost interior and change windshield wiper blades before their effectiveness is reduced.■ Watch for children — Reduce your speed in residential areas and around schools and parks. Children often dart out from between parked cars or into intersections.■ Do not drive while impaired — Fatigue is a form of impairment.

Get plenty of sleep and if you’ve consumed alcohol or drugs, fi nd alternate transportation such as a designated driver, taxi or transit.
