The SCS series of steel secondary containment systems offer owner/operators

of oil filled transformers an extremely cost effective and practical solution in

providing oil containment for larger power or transmission grid transformers

and delivers true execution of CSR obligations with an appropriate balance between project expenditure and protection of the environment.

Traditional concrete based containment systems are expensive and require lengthy on-site construction times. The SSC-PTX system is designed on a modular basis facilitating the system being partially assembled at our factory and delivered to site in sections which are

connected together hydraulically during the final assembly process. This modular concept significantly reduces the necessary on-site assembly time and we can achieve a 30 to 50% reduction of project construction times to comparable masonry solutions.

Our carbon steel containment systems are manufactured to the highest fabrication standards typically using 5mm carbon steel grit blasted with a 85µm galvanised finish giving a 30-year life for external applications. The containment retention integrity is fully tested using a NDT liquid penetrant of magnetic particle inspection, self certified with a PCN Level 2 certificate prior to leaving our factory. Utilising resistance seam welding joints to BS EN ISO 5817: 2014, Quality Level B which fuses the sheet metal surfaces together at the highest possible quality level to produce a continuous leak-tight seam.

Individual containment design size and shape is dependent on the type of transformer I.E. number and position of the cooling radiators, cable approach (above or below ground) and connection point; the Capture Green secondary containment system delivers complete flexibility which embraces all the necessary design challenges and provides a fully engineered manufactured solution delivered to site in a short period.

The transformer sits directly onto steel universal I beams located inside the containment area, which is supplied with M16 shoulder eye bolts (630kg vertical lift capacity). All containment systems are supplied with an isolation discharge valve with a 1½” or 2” BSP thread to accept the SFT HRC-80 type 1 or 2 hydrocarbon/sediment cartridge filters.

The SSC-PTX system requires a suitably reinforced concrete flat base and comes with an earthing/grounding flexible copper braid connection to ensure optimum electrical conductivity. Acoustic noise and vibration pollution dampers are utilised where necessary

to enable the installation to be as non-intrusive as possible to the local community.

Containment Fire Suppression

A containment flame suppression perforated grating system (option) is designed to starve and restrict the fires available oxygen and suppress any ignited oil inside the containment. Dielectric fluid flowing from the transformer tank will flow freely into the containment area below through the grating at a rate of 600l/min per 1m² surface area. The perforation hole size of 7mm covers approximately 4.1% of the total grating surface area and prevents larger burning items from entering the containment area and therefore coming into contact with the escaped transformer dielectric fluid.

Environmentally Sensitive (ESA) & Flood Risk Areas

The SSC-PTX secondary containment system is ideal for ESA or close to controlled water course electrical installations where situating oil filled transformers is normally a major risk without containing the equipment. The utilisation of a SCC-PTX system and HRC-80 hydrocarbon/sediment filter provide the perfect solution for grid transformers located in sensitive areas and protecting the environment

SSC containment systems can be installed at an elevated height to remove the electrical asset from danger of flooding and further aid flood defence policies and maintain crucial electricity supply continuity.

SSC Specials & Bespoke Systems

Capture Green offers a custom design service to develop and manufacture steel secondary containment systems to accommodate any size or shape of containment for oil filled electrical equipment, such as transformers (auto, earthing, distribution, power), MV switchgear, inductance coils, capacitors, etc.

Containment Capacity

Secondary containment systems must have a 110% minimum volume capacity of the equipment's oil volume; in certain circumstances this volume capacity needs to be increased to create a larger ‘freeboard’ area within the containment system.
