Captain’s Choice Cruisers – Who are they for?

As we know, there’s no such thing as an ‘average cruiser’, however, there are a few pointers you can look out for that may help you spot a potential Captain’s Choice customer, and find the perfect holiday for them; A typical Captain’s Choice customer will be aged between 65-75 years old.

This demographic are experienced cruisers who will typically have been on 4+ P&O Cruises holidays.

This audience love cruising and will have already experienced the mainstream trades. They’re now looking to trial new and unique itineraries.

They like to travel on longer and more unusual itineraries that offer something above and beyond the mainstream trades. Therefore the Captain’s Choice cruises, with their mix of maiden calls, overnights and events in port could be just what they’re looking for.

A high proportion of Captain’s Choice cruisers live in the South West and East Anglia.

Captain’s Choice CruisesOur Captain’s Choice cruises offer ample opportunity for relaxation and exploration, with an enticing blend of days at sea, glamorous gala evenings and calls in some of the world’s most exciting cities. We’ve handpicked these exhilarating itineraries because they offer something a little different; these are longer cruises, often calling at new or lesser-known ports. Their longer duration allows more opportunity to spend evenings in port. They can also be combined with a wealth of shore-side events and festivals that offer a unique opportunity for passengers to immerse themselves in the local culture and customs of the destinations we visit.

Welcome to your Captain’s Choice toolkit Inside these pages you’ll find everything you need to create a compelling case for customers to choose these cruises. From copy to imagery, we’ll also give you all you need to create your own customer-focussed communications.

Offering a mixture of British Isles, Baltic, Canada and New England, Central Mediterranean, Iceland, North Cape and Fjords, Caribbean (Ex UK) and Western Med, the diversity of the Captain’s Choice cruises on offer should ensure there’s something for everyone. The difficult part for you will be deciding where in this wonderful world they’d like to go!

Caribbean ex UK We all know that the Caribbean offers as close as it comes to holiday perfection, and no doubt you’ll be familiar with everything these marvellous islands have to offer too. So what exactly do our Captain’s Choice Caribbean cruises hold in store for the intrepid traveller? There are a host of exciting evenings in port for starters. Amongst the highlights are: St Lucia Cloaked in verdant rainforests, its skyline dominated by the dramatic twin peaks of Les Pitons and its gardens a riot of hibiscus and bougainvillea; St Lucia is the epitome of a Caribbean paradise. Visit beautiful beaches, charming fishing villages and glory in the botanical gardens. You might like to enjoy one of the many fabulous restaurants this little patch of paradise has to offer; St Lucian seafood is something that simply begs to be experienced. Barbados For a taste of the classic Caribbean, you can’t beat Barbados. Take your pick from every kind of water sport imaginable, stunning nature walks and bike rides. Explore the rugged and wild east coast of this richly diverse island, or visit the more sheltered beaches of the west coast, with their vibrant bars and fabulous restaurants. You might like to spend your time ashore in bustling Bridgetown, exploring Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison - a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tortola Largest of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola is an island of stunning beauty. Discover a perfect underwater world with a scuba experience. Visit the Maritime Museum for an insight into Tortola’s rich boat building history. You may like to enjoy the perfect 360 degree panoramas from the Skyworld restaurant, perched high in the hills above the capital, Road Town and specialising in delicious fresh fish.

Canada & New England Cities don’t come much more diverse or with bigger personalities than this eclectic collection along the USA and Canada coastline. From the dynamic bright lights and history of the big cities, to the military embattlements and towering cliffs of the eastern coastline, there are so many dizzying sights in the USA and Canada, you’ll wonder why you haven’t visited sooner. A New England cruise is worth the trip for the sight of New York’s iconic Lady of Liberty alone – but every destination is simply knock-out. Aurora R715 allows you to take a giant bite out of the Big Apple with an overnight stop in the city that never sleeps. With the wild abandonment of Nova Scotia, and evenings in port in baseball-loving Boston and chic Charleston high on the agenda, what's not to love? Charleston Quirky, charming and full of character, Charleston is the perfect place to experience a dose of real, old southern charm. Pop into the thriving food quarter for some traditional shrimp and grits, visit the designer boutiques of King Street, or the old City Market to pick up some traditional or artisan gifts. Charleston is the place to be for a real good time y’all!

British Isles With so much amazing world out there, it’s easy to overlook the historic richness, fantastic wildlife and quirky customs of our own green and pleasant lands. Sailing around the British Isles is a fantastic way to tick off those fascinating coastal cities that have been on your travel wish-list, well...forever. (And they’ll easily compete with any you’ll find abroad.) From the buzzing bars, shops and café culture of lyrical hubs like Glasgow and Dublin, to the untamed beauty of our wilder, more remote outposts off the coast of Scotland and in The Highlands, you’re certain to feel your soul stirring more than you ever imagined. With such diversity on our own doorstep, you’ll be glad you took the leap to get to know our shores that little bit better.

Western Mediterranean Highlights Aurora and Oriana offer some wonderfully eclectic itineraries on these longer journeys around the Western Med, combining classic ports with a number of new and lesser visited (but no less fascinating) calls. Corigliano Calabro You may give an understandable gasp of delight as you approach Corigliano Calabro on your ship. The white houses of the hilltop town look as if they’ve been piled higgledy-piggledy on top of each other and like they’re tumbling into the sea. Climb to the castle to see its hall of mirrors, all framed in gilded stucco and hung with Bohemian crystal chandeliers from a trompe-l'oeil ceiling. And, as if your ship were not an opulent enough experience, you could always visit the nearby ancient city of Sybaris which amassed great wealth thanks to its fertile land and busy port. Tarragona This endlessly sunny city offers up classic Mediterranean beach culture, a wealth of historically significant sites, and a classic foodie scene to tempt your taste buds. The beautiful medieval Cathedral is undoubtedly the heart of the city, and Tarragona serves up a tantalising array of food and wines behind its high walls and amongst its maze of narrow cobbled streets. Tarragona is home to a number of fascinating Roman sites, including a superbly preserved amphitheatre overlooking the sea, where it’s easy to imagine the Gladiators battling it out before the baying hordes of the ancient city.

Central Mediterranean Highlights Think you know the Med? You may have another think coming! These Captain’s Choice central Mediterranean cruises offer even the connoisseur cruiser the opportunity to immerse themselves in some new experiences. Venice With a number of Captain’s Choice cruises featuring overnight calls in Venice, there’s a perfect opportunity to explore the city’s famous landmarks as night falls, such as the bustling St Marks Square and Rialto Bridge. However, if you dive off the beaten path and away from the usual tourist haunts you’ll discover a wealth of neighbourhood osteria (taverns). Here, you can sip a glass of prosecco and nibble on some of the finest cicheti (bar snacks) for an authentic, and often very reasonably priced, slice of true Venetian life. Greece & Turkey

With calls in Athens (from Piraeus) and Ephesus (from Kusadasi), you can explore some of the most Indulge your inner culture vulture and discover some of the Mediterranean’s oldest civilisations.

perfectly preserved ancient Greek and Greco-Roman architecture, including the Temple of Artemis in Ephesus, once the biggest temple on earth, and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. With full day calls in Seville (tours from Cadiz), Naples, Messina, Rhodes and Valletta amongst others, this cruise is perfect for intrepid adventurers, history buffs and indeed anyone who enjoys the stunning scenery, wondrous architecture and fabulous food that the Med offers in abundance.

New & Lesser Frequented Ports We’re introducing a couple of new Mediterranean destinations in 2016, together with some lesser frequented gems. Sibenik, Croatia - New port If the Italian coastline gets you all aglow, then underrated Sibenik will certainly follow suit. Croatia’s oldest native town on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea, is a gleaming example of medieval history. Lose yourself in the maze of steep backstreets and cobbled squares. For views across the Dalmatian coast, climb to the top of not one - but two - Venetian forts built in the 16th century to repel Ottoman invasion. In the Old Town, the Cathedral of St James is the city’s crowning glory. Admire the jaw-dropping fusion of Gothic and Renaissance styles in the vast interior. Olbia, Sardinia - New port You don’t have to travel to the Caribbean to find sea that sparkles in every shade of blue. Sardinia’s northeast coast is an earthly paradise of shimmering reefs, coves and bays. The main port of Olbia is often overlooked as crowds rush to the glittering Costa Smeralda, a millionaire’s playground for those looking to indulge in La Dolce Vita lifestyle. But Olbia (meaning ‘happy’ in Greek) brings much to smile about. The glorious sandy beaches are less crowded for a start and its bustling historic centre is refreshingly authentic, packed with boutiques, bars and sun-dappled piazzas.

Norway & Iceland No matter how many times you’ve seen pictures of the spectacular scenery of the Norwegian Fjords and Iceland; nothing quite prepares you as you witness these awe-inspiring landscapes unfold before your eyes. In these lands where the spectacular comes as standard, there’s surely no finer place to take in the incredible panoramas than from the deck of a P&O Cruises ship. These lands of ice and fire may be famous for their icy winter temperatures, but they make a wonderful late spring or alternative summer holiday, with pleasantly warm temperatures and longer days to take in all those jaw-dropping views.

Iceland Iceland’s capital Reykjavik remains achingly cool, no matter the time of year and with an overnight stop here on board Arcadia (J710), there’s ample opportunity to enjoy its trendy bistros, snazzy cocktail bars, or to relax in the geothermal springs of the Blue Lagoon.

Northern Lights Witnessing the awesome sight of nature’s own spectacular lightshow is amongst the most memorable experiences in travel. With two evenings in port at Alta; gateway to the Northern Lights, Oriana offers a fantastic chance to get up close and personal with the Aurora Borealis. Alta is the site of the world’s first Northern Lights observatory and in winter is the perfect place to view this most astonishing of events. If you’ve a taste for adventure in the great outdoors, you might like to run with the pack on an exhilarating dog sledding safari, or watch herds of reindeer from a snow mobile.

Baltic Join Aurora R705 as she spends two full days in the jewel in the Baltic's crown, St Petersburg. You'll fill every minute of your time ashore sightseeing, as Russia's second city is home to first-class culture. The world-famous State Hermitage Museum is a perfect place to start and from there you’ll find incredible palaces, theatres and galleries in every direction. Colourful St Petersburg packs a visual punch you never forget and you can expect a whirlwind two days of gilded splendour, folklore, caviar, dancing and shopping as you walk in the footsteps of the Tsars.
