Many vie for Provincetown selectmen seats By Steve Desroches Gate house Media, The cape Codder Posted Feb15, 2007

PROVINCETOWN — Forget 2008. Who cares about Obama or Clinton, Giuliani or Brownback? The election to watch will be in Provincetown. The board of selectmen race for the May 1, 2007 town election is attracting a diverse and growing field of candidates. With more than a month until all nomination papers are due in town hall, eight townspeople returned their papers with the 20 required signatures of qualified voters. And an additional seven residents have taken out nomination papers, but as of press time have not returned them. Four out of the five-member board of selectmen seats will be on the ballot this year. Two seats are for a three-year term, and one seat for a two-year and another seat for a one-year term. Selectwoman Michele Couture will become the most senior person on the board. Her term ends in May 2008. Two three-year seats Still over a month before the deadline, the race for two open three-year seats is growing crowded. Incumbent Richard Olson is running for another three-year term. Olson was first elected in 2002 to a two-year term. He was elected to a full three-year term in 2004. He previously served on the planning board. Olson is a retired attorney and served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. Also running for one of the two available three-year terms are George Bryant, Milton Isserlis and Austin Knight. Bryant, a former selectman, is the current Provincetown representative to the Barnstable County Assembly of Delegates and is also on the housing authority. Isserlis is an attorney and has served on several town committees or boards in the past. Knight is a contractor and is currently serving on the water and sewer board, the community preservation committee, the town manager search committee, historical commission and the fireworks task force. Peter Costa, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the board in 2006, took out papers, but has yet to return them. Francis J. Santos and Brunetta Wolfman have also taken out nomination papers, but have not returned them to date. Santos is of the Flyer's Boat Yard family. Wolfman is a former president of Roxbury Community College. Two-year seat Selectman David Nicolau resigned two weeks ago, effective May i. He said he must attend to family health issues and does not have the time necessary to continue service on the board of selectmen. Running for his remaining two years, so far, are Larry Flores, Elaine Anderson and Pam Parmakian. Flores is a volunteer firefighter and captain of firehouse number four. Parmakian works for Community Housing Resource, Inc., owned by developer Ted Malone. CHR develops 408 projects on the Outer Cape creating a mix of market rate and affordable housing units. Parmakian is a property management coordinator. She is also a certified real estate appraiser and is a member of the housing authority. Elaine Anderson is the chairwoman of the community preservation committee.
