UPCOMING GAMES

Behind strong defense and goaltend-ing, with timely offense sprinkled in, the Washington Capitals are in good shape.

The Capitals held serve at home, winning the first two games of their first-round playoff series with the New York Rangers, before dropping a one-goal decision in Game 3 at Madison Square Garden.

Goaltender Michal Neuvirth has been perhaps Washington’s star of the series thus far, allowing just four goals on 82 shots for a 1.22 goals-against average and a .951 save percentage through the first three Stanley Cup play-off games of his career.

The Caps’ key forwards have led the team offensively, with captain Alex Ovechkin racking up two goals and two assists, center Jason Arnott adding one goal and two assists, and left wing Alexander Semin tallying one goal and one assist.

Defenseman Mike Green has made a triumphant return after playing in just two games since Feb. 6, recording three assists through three games.

Here’s a recap of each of the first three contests of the series:

Game 1 Washington 2, New York 1 (OT)

Having been held without a goal in his previous 14 playoff games, Semin came through for the Caps at the exact right moment.

Semin scored off a one-timer at the 18:24 mark of overtime, created by Arnott’s offensive-zone takeaway, to give Washington a victory in Game 1 at Verizon Center.

After the teams went into the third period deadlocked at 0-0, the Rangers struck first on a Matt Gilroy goal 1:56 into the final frame.

But Ovechkin answered, tying the game at 1-1 with 6:16 to go in regula-tion. Neuvirth stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced.

“He played great, just like [New York’s Henrik] Lundqvist,” Caps coach Bruce Boudreau said. “I thought both goalies were outstanding. That’s how I knew Michal would play.”

Game 2 Washington 2, New York 0Neuvirth earned his first career play-

off shutout, while Jason Chimera and Arnott backed him up with goals for the

Caps as they took a 2-0 series lead at Verizon Center.

Neuvirth made 22 saves to blank the Rangers.

“They had shots early in the game,” Neuvirth said. “After [the] first period, I think they had like 13 shots. I feel pretty good about my game right now. After, I think we didn’t give up any big scoring chances, I think it was a solid team effort tonight.”

Game 3 New York 3, Washington 2New York’s Brandon Dubinsky

scored the game-winner with 1:39 re-maining on a drive to the net which took a favorable bounce, giving the Rangers their first victory of the series in the first game at Madison Square Garden.

The Capitals came back twice to nearly force their second overtime in three contests. Ovechkin scored with one minute to go in the second period to tie it at 1-1 and Mike Knuble scored with 5:12 to go in the third to tie it at 2-2. But Dubinsky finished Washington off to draw New York to within 2-1 heading into Game 4.

Dino Ciccarelli made Washington Capitals franchise history on this night, accomplishing something no one has equaled since.

Ciccarelli scored four goals in a 7-2 rout of the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 4 of the 1992 Patrick Division semifinals to set a team record for goals in a playoff game.

“[It] was nice. But you can’t get too ex-cited about it before you have to go right back at it in another day or so,” Ciccarelli told reporters after the game.

Ciccarelli scored once in the first to give Washington a 1-0 lead before tally-ing three times in the third.

The win gave the Caps a 3-1 lead in the series, pushing the defending Stanley Cup champions to the brink of elimination in the first round of the playoffs.

The Capitals entered their current series against the New York Rangers with seven postseason hat tricks in their history, two of which were recorded by Ciccarelli, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2010, including the team’s first-ever postseason trick in 1990.

However, only the one on this night went for more than three goals.

The other Capitals who recorded play-off hat tricks were John Druce in 1990, Dale Hunter and Al Iafrate in 1993, Alex Ovechkin in 2009 and Nicklas Backstrom in 2010.

Ciccarelli remains one of the Capitals’ top playoff performers, as he registered 21 goals, 35 points and 54 penalty minutes in just 32 postseason contests with the club.

“It’s a point in my life where you don’t need to be out chasing things if you’re in a good spot and feel like you’re with a team that has a chance to win all the time and contend. That’s a very important thing and a very important thing for you and your family, to stay in that spot. I’m happy with my decision.” –Caps forward mike Knuble on why he signed a one-year extension with the Caps.

Q: What do you remember about your first playoff experience?JA: My first time was in Edmonton. We made it and we actually beat Dallas in Game 7. They were first and we were eighth, and we just snuck in and just the level of play and the energy of the building — everything’s at a differ-ent level. Everything’s in the microscope, every little detail of the game is under the microscope. Obviously there’s going to be mistakes in the game and things like that, but everything’s on a new level. If you think about it, every faceoff’s so important. So every faceoff’s going to be a battle because you want to have that puck the whole time. Regular season, you get in the neutral zone late in the game and you’re up by a little bit, it’s not as important. But in playoffs, even if you’re up, every faceoff’s important,

every blocked shot, every little chip-out, every little thing is heightened.Q: Have you noticed a drive in this team to improve on past playoff performances?JA: Yeah, and not everything’s going to go our way. We’re going to need a little luck, we’re going to need some healthy guys back, you’ve got to have great goaltending from the get-go. You can sit here and say that this team’s playing a good style and everything, but everybody’s got to go out and play well, and you’ve got to have a little bit of luck on your side. But the main thing is they’re heading in the right direction rather that going wheeling and dealing every single night, going on the offense. Guys are re-ally making an effort to play more defense and keeping that third guy high, and helping out the goaltender.Q: When did that crystallize for you as a player because obviously young players want to go, go, go?

JA: When I came from Edmonton, we were go, go, go. We didn’t have much of a defensive sys-tem. I got to [New] Jersey and I learned so much just from [coaches] Robbie Ftorek and Jacques [Lemaire] was there, how to play defense and the defensive part of the game, save more of your energy to go on the offense rather than just go, go, go all over the ice. … It took us a little while to learn all those things and jell as a team and know what it takes to win, to get to that next level. It’s just going through the war with guys and these guys have gotten through it, and we’ve got a very talented team, a very good group of guys. It’s all a learning experience.Q: From your playoff experience, how would you gauge the readiness of this club to make a deep playoff run?JA: It’s hard to say. … Everything’s just got to fall into place. You can’t just turn it on and turn it off right then. I think we have as good a chance as anybody. We’ve got a solid team, and if everything goes right, we get some healthy guys back, we should be all right.

Veteran center Jason Arnott recently spoke about his extensive playoff experience, the lessons he has learned from it, and how those lessons can help the Capitals.
