It applies to service workers who are paid by the hour and work in an occupation with one of the 68 Standard Occupational Classification System titles named in the law, such as retail clerks, home health aides, cooks, food servers, and janitors. Closing the Academic Achievement GapIt has been a priority of the General Assembly to close this gap so that children of all income classes have opportunities for academic excellence. To that end, we passed legislation that:
» Permits school boards with low-achieving schools to increase the number of school sessions each year and the number of school hours each day.
» Provides for a summer reading program for kindergarten students, reading assessments of young students, and individual reading plans to improve literacy.
» Creates a task force to develop a plan to help close the achievement gaps between racial, ethnic and socioeconomic groups and genders.
» Allows a best practices literacy pilot study, and the distribution of model curricula and frameworks in reading and mathematics for grades pre-kindergarten to four.
» Provides professional development for teachers and develops strategies for students in danger of failing, and culturally-relevant teaching methods for students whose primary language is not English.
Cerrando la Deficiencia AcadémicaUna de las prioridades de la Asamblea General ha sido darles la misma oportunidad de educación de calidad a todos, sin importar su ingreso familiar o estatus social. Para lograrlo, aprovamos el siguente projecto de ley:
» Permitir a las juntas de educación de distritos escolares que estan bajo nivel de educacion, aumentar mas horas y dias para aprovechamiento escolar.
» Proveer un programa de lectura de verano para niños de kindergarten, una evaluación para los estudiantes jóvenes, y planes individuales para mejorar la lectura.
» Crear un grupo para desarrollar un plan que ayudara a disminuir la deficiencia académica entre niños de diferentes
grupos raciales étnicos, grupos socioeconómicos y género.
» Permitir un estudio de comprensión y la distribución de planes de estudios en lectura y matemáticas para aquellos entre pre-kindergarten y cuarto grado.
» Proveer instrucción profesional para maestros y desarrollar estrategias para los estudiantes que están en riesgo de fracasar y métodos de enseñanza culturalmente relevantes para niños que el Ingles no es su idioma principal.
Helping Seniors
The legislature focused on improving the quality of life for our senior citizens by:
» Allowing people to enroll in the ConnPACE plan if they are not eligible for Medicare.
» Rejecting the proposal to significantly raise cost-sharing in the Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders.
» Expanding the state’s Money follows the Person Program.
» Establishing Nursing Home Grievance Committees at each facility.
In addition, grandparent’s rights will be the subject of a special study aimed at enhancing their ability to seek visitation rights.
I am proud to support these and other services for our senior citizens.

La legislatura se enfoco en mejorar la calidad de vida de nuestros envejecientes y son las siguientes:
» Permitir que nuestros envejecientes se inscriban en el plan ConnPACE si no son elegible para Medicare.
» Rechazar las propuestas para aumentar de manera significativa la participación en los gastos en el programa de cuidado del hogar en Connecticut para los envejecientes.
» Aumentar los fondos del programa del estado que sigue a la persona y establecimos varios comités de queja en cada centro de envejecientes.
Además, los derechos de los abuelos serán objeto de un estudio especial destinado a mejorar los derechos de visita.
