Label 71: From Green to Red In the middle of May 1971, Capitol redesigned their album backdrop. The green label, Label 69, featured

a purple logo against a light green background. The Capitol logo along with the word Capitol, was

accompanied by either a “TM” to the right of Capitol or a registered trademark symbol, ® underneath the word.

However, Capitol’s redesign moved the ® logo to the right of the l in Capitol and changed the color of

the label from green to red. Capitol’s plant in Los Angeles used up their green label blanks before changing to red. From May to July 1971, the label closely resembled a “red” version of Label 69. As summer went by, Capitol decided to remove the white circle/C band from the backdrop, leaving only red. The remaining red labels have no white “C”, and like this, the label style remained until November 1972. Label 71a

Page 27: Capitol Albums, 601 to 700 From Green to Red

The green label did not disappear entirely, however. Occasional releases from 1971-72 show up with green backdrops, so perhaps Capitol had green label blanks sitting around and decided to use them. These green labels were printed with the ® in its new position.
