ST HELENS DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT CENTRE (DTC), UKArchitecture

Completed in 2008, the £100m St Helens DTC signals the future for a significantproportion of modern healthcare provision. Acting as an outpatients-style treatmentcentre, rather than a 24/7 hospital, it is designed around a dramatic central atriumwhich makes the whole building intuitively easy to move around, while beingsympathetic to, and integrating with, the local landscape.

The project features something which is often missing from major projects –cooperative input from ‘end-users’ including nurses, doctors and patients. As a result, patient pathways have been designed to be as short as possible while a centralisedreception and administration area manages the whole building from a locationimmediately adjacent to the main entrance.

The demand for additional check-infacilities at Dublin Airport led DAA(Dublin Airport Authority) to identifyan unused basement area as a site fora new check-in zone. The conceptused innovative lighting techniquesand materials normally usedexternally – such as terracotta panels– to give the impression of naturaldaylight. The fast-track programmeled to the use of pre-fabrication andsystems that could be installedquickly including the ceiling/lightingunits, check-in desks and wall finishes.

DELHI PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT (PRT) SYSTEMMultidisciplinary

The proposed Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system in Delhi will feature 'pod cars'transporting individuals or small groups - usually no more than six in a car - on anelevated track in battery-powered driverless vehicles.

In 2009 Capita Symonds was appointed by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal TransitSystems Limited (DIMTS) to carry out an initial techno economic feasibility study intothe scheme. The study considered all aspects of route planning, demand assessment, engineering feasibility and business case evaluation for the PRT. It also provided anassessment of operations and financial forecasting of revenue.

In 2011, on the recommendation of the Delhi Chief Minister, Capita Symonds was againappointed by DIMTS to provide a report recommending the preferred location for thePRT from five proposed areas across the city.

DELHI REGIONAL RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM (RRTS)Multidisciplinary

Capita Symonds is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR)for the 110km Delhi-Sonipat-Panipat 'corridor', part of aproposed Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) for theNational Capital Region (NCR) which consists of eightcorridors. NCR is a highly urbanised region spread over fourconstituent states of Haryana, NCT-Delhi, Rajasthan and UttarPradesh. As its population is expected to grow to 64.14 millionby 2021 an efficient transport system is vital in order tofacilitate the region's development. Capita Symonds' scope ofwork includes an alignment report which comprises a review ofcorridor characteristics; identifying and reviewing possiblealignment options through each section of the corridor; andidentifying land parcels and station locations.

DELHI BUS RAPID TRANSIT (BRT) SYSTEM: AMBEDKAR NAGAR TO DELHI GATEMultidisciplinary

The BRT System will be a network of 'corridors' which are usedby buses within the city. This particular project providedremedial measures for traffic congestion on the 14.8kmcorridor from Ambedkar Nagar to Delhi Gate, which consists of17 major signalised junctions, through the provision of anIntelligent Transport System (ITS). Capita Symonds wasappointed by Delhi Integrated Multi Modal Transit SystemsLimited (DIMTS) to identify, and oversee the implementationof, the ITS. The scope of work included an assessment of theexisting system and the proposal of engineering changes to thelayout of the highway in order to improve road safety as wellas traffic and bus flow through the corridor. A detailedsimulation model for the corridor was also set up to testvarious bus priorities and traffic signalling strategies.
