OVERVIEW

Shanghai’s history as China’s gateway city is hallmarked by a unique

blend of Oriental heritage and global architectural influences. This

rich legacy is enhanced by the addition of a new luxury hotel, Capella

Shanghai, Jian Ye Li. Located within the cultural preservation zone of

Xuhui District, Capella Shanghai will be the only all-villa urban resort

in the last remaining cluster of shikumen (stone gate) townhouses.

Originally built in the 1930s by French real estate company Fonciere

et Immobiliere de Chine, the hotel fuses timeless Shanghainese

courtyard living with Parisian flair. A fine example of Shanghai’s

architectural heritage, the Jian Ye Li estate features 22 rows of

shikumen lanes, connecting more than 200 two-storey houses.

Today, few original shikumen lanes remain, making Capella Shanghai,

Jian Ye Li an important showcase of the city’s cultural heritage.

Sensitively restored by a team of experts, the urban resort comprises

the ultra-luxury Capella Shanghai, Capella Residences and The

Gallery, a retail destination for lifestyle brands.

HISTORY

Dating from the 1930s, the villas housed middle-upper class traders

and expatriates working in Shanghai. In 1945, the area was

transformed into a residential area for local Shanghainese. It

subsequently became a beehive of activity, home to hundreds of

families, with residents trading fresh produce and other goods in a

market-place setting along the narrow lanes.

A distinctive landmark of Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is the Water

Tower. Early residents used it as their source of water, and in later

years it provided access and air circulation to the basement. Being the

tallest point of the estate, the refashioned Water Tower now serves as

a light and signal service tower, as well as an observation point for a

bird’s eye view of this beautiful heritage precinct.

ACCOMMODATION Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li offers 55 shikumen villas and 40

luxurious residences. The one-, two- and three-bedroom shikumen

villas range in sizes from 111 sqm to 251 sqm. All villas feature

premium bath amenities by Acqua di Parma as well as luxurious king

and twin beds in the two and three-bedroom villas.

Created by Jaya International Design, the interiors recreate an

exclusive 1930s communal living experience. The elegant blend of

French-accented furniture with Chinese sensibility is reflected through

the artworks and accessories. Rhythm and symmetry are expressed in

the furniture layout and ceiling designs, and Jaya’s calm palette

enables the beautiful Chinoiserie elements to be embraced and

infused into the design, using local materials for the interior finishes.

le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire is a community. It is a casual chic

venue for all occasions, celebrations or simple indulgence of

homemade cuisine in a welcoming ambience. True to the iconic chef’s

honest approach, Pierre Gagnaire’s menu is a means of expression,

replacing words with dishes that touch the heart and soul. le Comptoir

showcases simple, honest and elegant French cuisine, complemented

by innovative textures and bold flavors. Helmed by Pierre Gagnaire’s

protégé, Romain Chapel, le Comptoir will serve breakfast, lunch,

afternoon tea and dinner. The extensive wine and beverage list is

carefully crafted to enhance diners’ culinary journey in a classic

Parisian setting reminiscent of Shanghai’s old-world glamor in the

1930s.

District, Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li is 35 minutes’ drive from

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, and 60 minutes from

Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

CLIMATE The Shanghai climate is generally mild and humid, with four distinct

seasons. July and August are the hottest months, with temperatures

often above 35 degrees Celsius. The coldest time is from late January

to late February, when temperatures can reach freezing point.
