discovering the missing link between the Canaries and

What to expectHard to beat as an all round holiday destinationThe Cape Verde islands are a crescent shaped archipelago500km west of Senegal in the Atlantic Ocean. They enjoy

their own diverse culture, strong sense of history andidentity that has been widely inuenced by Africa, Portugaland Brazil, yet remains unique to Cape Verde.

This diversity is only multiplied by the act that each individual island is alsoso di erent rom its neighbours di erent in people and history, di erent inlandscape, di erent in levels o development and even in dialect. It all adds

up to an incredibly alive destination, raw and emerging or sure, but w tropical climate and enough beauty and beguiling charm or even the m jaded o travellers.

The short fights (around 6 hours), the small time di erence and the people all add to the appeal not to mention that the islands are still lokey enough to eel like a bit o a discovery.

The ten islands all o er something di erent, and whilst its true thatholidaymakers come to Cape Verde to simply relax in the sunshine it do

pay to explore, as theres so much variety on o er. Youll nd excellenthotels and beaches; sun and sur on Sal and Boa Vista; an active volcano onFogo where they produce their own wine o notable quality; the genuinelybreathtaking interior o Santo Anto with its rice terraces clinging to cragsand precipices, the history o Santiago and the throb o music in the culturalcentre o Mindelo on So Vicente. Something or everyone!

Flying is the most practical way o travelling rom island to island however itshould be noted that TACV (Cabo Verde Airlines), who provide the islandsinternal fights, can and do change schedules and fights are sometimesdelayed, cancelled or even depart early, though this has improved a gooddeal in recent years. For this reason we may recommend an overnight stayon Sal or Boa Vista or one night prior to, or ollowing an international fight. The smaller islands are more di cult to visit due to in requent fights but our

team will be happy to advise what itineraries are possible. There is a regular erry service that operates between So Vicente and Santo Anto. For morein ormation on the smaller islands such as So Nicolau, Brava, Maio andSanta Luzia please visit our websiteCapeVerde.co.uk .

With its mixture o sun, excellent beaches and geographical, cultural andhistorical interest, the Cape Verde islands are hard to beat as an all roundholiday destination.

Tourism - the actsIt is vital to remember that tourism is still very much in its in ancy in Cape

Verde and health and sa ety as well as service levels in hotels and restaurantsdo not always compare avourably to hotels in more established destinations. There is poverty and you may encounter locals trying to sell you paintingsand handicra ts. Despite being o -putting at times, the sellers are quiteharmless and are very ew and ar between. There is ongoing developmenton the islands, which can range rom single villas to huge complexes andduring your visit you are likely to see and hear some building work. I thereis building work taking place either in, or next to your chosen hotel, we willadvise you i we eel it will a ect your holiday.

A bit o backgroundGiven the position o the Cape Verde islands 500km rom the coasto West A rica its not surprising that they remained uninhabited untilPortuguese traders populated them in the 15th century. The islandsbecame an outpost o the Portuguese empire and a stop on trading andslaving routes across the Atlantic, including visits by Sir Francis Drake in the1580s. As such the islands do have a unique culture, part West A rican, partPortuguese with a splash o Brazilian, and the people are ercely proud o

their heritage both on a national and individual island level.

CurrencyThe currency in Cape Verde is Escudo expressed as $ or CV Esc be or

the amount which can only be obtained on the islands. There is a xedexchange rate o $110 to 1 Euro and as Euros are also generally accept

we recommend that you take Euros in place o Sterling. Travellers checan be changed on some islands but the commission rates are high.

Visa and Mastercard are accepted, and all other cards ie. Switch andMaestro are not. Please do not rely soley on ATM machines.

Language and cultureThe o cial language o the islands is Portuguese, which is used in anything

that is written; yet Portuguese is rarely spoken. Instead they use Creole, their national language, and even this can di er rom island to island. The Cape Verdeans are generally very riendly and welcoming manypeople will approach just to chat and to use and practise their English.

Medication At the time this brochure was printed no vaccinations were required to visit the Cape Verde islands. There is also no malaria present in Cape Verde with the exception o the island o Santiago rom September to November.I you are visiting Santiago during these months please check with your GP

    or the latest advice.

Hotel classi cations We have created our own rating system based upon standards available within the islands and taking into consideration eedback rom our customers. Our ratings are illustrated by a hibiscus fower.

A fower outline illustrates a midway grade. Our team will be happy todiscuss in more detail which hotels would best suit you.

ClimateThe weather on each island can vary but year round temperatureson all the islands are in the mid to high twenties. Sal and Boa Vistaenjoy virtually uninterrupted sunshine although it can rain irregularlybetween August and October. Due to their location in the Atlantic

Ocean and some o the islands being fat, Cape Verde attracts aconstant breeze, which is heightened between November and April- per ect or watersports, though cooler in the evenings.

Restaurants and nightli e You will nd a selection o restaurants in the main towns o ering locadishes as well as international cuisine and many will have live Cape Verdmusic at least once a week. There are numerous bars and restaurants in

the likes o Santa Maria (Sal) and Mindelo (So Vicente) and these can b

throbbing with music long into the night. The smaller, quieter islands incBoa Vista do not have such a wide selection and the limited menu may wbe what they have prepared on the day. Prices vary, but expect to pay theequivalent o between 25-30 or a three course meal with wine.

FamiliesChildren are made to eel very welcome in Cape Verde. Although moshotels do not have speci c childrens clubs or a babysitting service therselection which o er play areas or daily activities or children to join

to the islands will prove extremely interesting or children due to the vculture, changing landscape and the range o activities available insideout o the hotels. Please check in the hotel descriptions, or to discuss trequirements or your amily urther, please call our reservations team0845 330 2046 .

Getting around Cape VerdeTaxis are readily available in the larger towns and as a guide, a 2 to 3 m

journey would be approximately 3. The most inexpensive way o gettaround are the aluguers that are easily identi ed and drive around towo ten ull o passengers and packages. You simply shout when you wget o ! Car hire is available but roads are poor and quite bumpy outsimain towns with little signage so we do not recommend this.

Activities Along with superb beaches and a great climate, the Cape Verde islandsprovide a wealth o activities or those who enjoy a bit more than sunseeking and meandering around whilst they are on holiday. There are ahuge number o activities on o er including diving and snorkelling, o sur ng, small to big game shing, turtle or whale watching, excursiplane, boat, camel or quad bike, plus as many hikes, rambles and treks you can manage! O course each island does have its own niche i youa particular activity during your stay. To enquire about a speci c activitexcursion and to check what is best on your chosen island please call oreservations team on 0845 330 2046.

Although the focus of our accommodation tends to be on Sal and Boa Vista, we do feature hotels on the islands of So Vicente, Santiago, Santo Anto and Fogo for the more scenically spectacular side of the Cape Verde islands. For extensiveinformation on these islands, please visit the Cape Verde Experience website.

So VicenteSo Vicente is rightly regarded as one of the cultural centres of the islands. In thecapital, Mindelo, youll nd a choice of bars, restaurants, ne old-style colonialarchitecture and cobbled streets. Youre likely to hear the delicate melancholyof the traditional mornas as sung by the islands most famous daughter, the lateCesaria Evoria, plus the more frantic funana. Yet, culture is not the only thing onoffer in So Vicente. Geographically, the island offers a vast array of landscapes- from the dramatic mountainous interior, the dried river bed of Ribeira Julio with its lush plantations and typical Cape Verdean villages, to the spectacular coastline around the Baia das Gatas.

Santo AntoSanto Anto is the second largest island in the archipelago and has a beautifullush, green landscape on its north side. There are precipitous peaks, jaw-dropping ravines and dwellings clinging to the side of mountains with locals tending their crops in terraced areas that look completely inaccessible. Thescenic drive across the mountains from Porto Novo to Ribeira Grande in thenorth east of the island is well worth the trip!

SantiagoSantiago is the largest and most developed island in the archipelago with a richhistory, dramatic mountainous scenery and lively nightlife. We would recommenda day trip to the old capital of Cidade Velha (a UNESCO world heritage site) andForte Real de So Filipe, the main slave trading point between Europe, Africaand America. Of an evening, Praia, the islands modern capital, comes alive with music, which can be heard in most bars and restaurants. The spectacular hinterland is superb for walking most of which consist of nding a point in thecentre of the island and following a ribeira or stream down to the coast.

FogoOne of the absolute highlights of any visit to Cape Verde has to be a trip to theactive volcanic crater on Fogo still warm from its last eruption in 1995. Youcan walk around in the craters, and see evidence of the spectacularly fertileland at its heart, where the islanders grow coffee beans and the grapes whichproduce the famous Fogo wine. So Filipe, the capital of Fogo, is a pretty townand the third largest in Cape Verde. The buildings are of Portuguese design inpastel colours with terracotta roofs. Pretty squares, cobbled streets and plentyof trees and owering plant pots add to the vibrant colours on display.

T he Foya Branca is a versatile resort-style hotel, combining anexcellent location next to the beach and with some superbfacilities.Situated in beautifully kept gardens with palm trees and owering bougainvilleaand overlooking the sandy beach of So Pedro, the hotel enjoys a peacefulsetting with an impressive view. The extensive grounds include two largeswimming pools, a childrens pool and play area, plus a gym, tennis courts, ptanque and even a giant chessboard. Fishing, diving and horse-riding can alsoall be arranged at the hotel during your stay (payable locally).

Guest rooms in the newer block are light and airy with good furnishings throughout and are located over two oors with either a terrace or balcony. We also highly recommend upgrading to a sea view room. There is a choice of two bars plus a stylish evening restaurant and a lunch timesnack bar in which to dine. The hotels main restaurant offers la carte andset table dhte menus with a good choice of local and international cuisine, including the wonderfully fresh catch of the day sh option. Although waiter service in general can be slow in Cape Verde, in this particular restaurant it is well worth the wait. If you are planning to head out to sample the nightlife in the town of Mindelo, only a 10-minute drive away, after dinner, our tip is to order your food immediately on arrival at the restaurant prior to ordering your drinks. This hotel is the perfect choice for the more adventurous of our customerslooking for activities and the opportunity to explore around the island of So Vicente, making full use of the hotels frequent courtesy shuttle bus intoMindelo, or taking the short stroll along the beach to the small nearby shing village to watch the daily catch being gathered in. Foya Branca is also secludedenough to offer a relaxing retreat by the sea if you wish, and is a favourite hotel with our clients for twin and multi-centre holidays around the islands.

A very quiet hotel which was perfect. Fantastic staff who were all very friendly and helpful. The shuttle bus service is very reliable.
