Next General Meeting Our next general meeting will be Wednesday, December 5, at the American Legion Hall behind Hugh MacRae Park, 702 Pine Grove Drive. Social hour starts at 4:30 at the bar with catered dinner at 5:45. Your dues pays for the meal but an RSVP to the E-vite is absolutely necessary and essential to insure that the proper amount of food is contracted with the caterer. Please remember to bring and wear your name tag Chairman of the Board Message Scotty Scott – President I would first like to take a moment, on behalf of all CFMC members, to thank Pete Robison for his years of service as Secretary on the Board of Directors, but particularly for the many hours of his time spent updating the Club calendars each month and for faithfully producing this excellent news letter. This will be Pete’s last as he and his wife Nancy will soon be moving to Florida to be closer to their family. We wish Pete and Nancy the very best in the next chapter of their lives. All those he has touched during his time in Wilmington will miss Pete. I would also like to thank the members of the Board of Directors, all the activity chairs, and all the many volunteers that make the CFMC so special. In reviewing all the club activities, dinners and special events this past year, I calculate that our 300 members have attended around 5700 club activities during 2019. That is something we all can be proud of. As you likely have already heard, Dave and his Events Committee have a Year End Extravaganza planned for the December General Meeting. Our program for September featured a presentation byseveral Club members on their recent awesome fishing

trip off Baja, California. They showed exciting pictures from the trip and shared great war stories about "the ones that got away".

Our speaker in October was Suzanne Immen, co-founder of theWild Horse Preserve at Grayce Wynds Farm, in Holden Beach. Her talk was entitled "Wild Horses of the East Coast". Suzanne is a retired educator and a noted authority on wild horses throughout the East Coast

Luncheons are generally on the 3rd Tuesday each month at the Bluewater Grill, Wrightsville Beach. As is customary, registrationand menu selection begin at 11:30, our speaker will begin at noon, and lunch should be served around 12:40. The cost is $20, no checks or credit cards can be accepted. Exact change is appreciated. Guests and spouses are always welcome.

Golf Jack Kazmarski - [email protected]

As you know the vagaries of the weather as well as the availability of courses in good condition, and at a

reasonable price, makes it a little difficult to pinpoint when and where we will be playing a month (or two) in advance.

Hiking Jeff Barnes - [email protected] Frank Amoroso – [email protected]

In September the hiking group visited Moore’s Creek Battlefield.

They crossed the bridge where the Patriots were successful

They saw a musket demonstration

The October outing had the hiking group walking about 4 miles around the Wrightsville Loop before heading to Poe’s tavern for food and fellowship.

Recent Trips September 23: Tom McNamara and Dale

Nixon fished the beautiful lower waters of the Cape Fear River, near Southport, with Captain Jon Huff of CircleH Charters, looking for red drum. Unfortunately, it appears that most of the drum had lockjaw that day but we did catch one that we released. The good news is that we did catch several speckled sea trout, including 4 keepers for dinner, and a flounder that was released. Captain Jon was an outstanding guide....very knowledgeable, experienced, hard working, and was an excellent coach for Tom and I. We learned some new fishing techniques that neither of us had ever been coached on before. A great day and we’ll definitely go out with Jon again! October 2: Shai Abisch, Larry Z-man, Bill Richards, and a fellow local fisherman, Paul Plishka, spent a “swell” day off shore fishing for King and Spanish Mackerel with Captain Rod Bierstedt. We had an excellent trip with Capt. Rod. There was a strong East wind with some pretty good breakers going out the inlet and we caught all of our fish just outside the breaking waves. Later in the morning, we went further out to look for kingsbut Capt. Rod said the water was stilltoo dirty for good fishing so after anhour or so, we came back in to catchmore Spanish. The swells were longfrom the hurricane 2500 miles away inthe Atlantic. It was a warm fall day andthe “rollers” caused by the swells madethe captain’s job and the personsteering the boat a little challenging. The water was stirred up further out tosea from the storm; however, 17Spanish Mack keepers made for agood dinner for everyone.

Shai enjoying “swell” ride

October 9: Malcolm Thaden and Chuck Herron fished with Captain Jon Huff. Fished all day (past the paid for 1/2 day charter), Jon wanted to keep fishing until we caught something. Lousy day, windy, frontscoming through, but we keptat it. Ended up with two trout(Jon and Chuck onartificials) a large red drum,(Malcolm on live bait) thatwas half inch too big tokeep, and two smallflounder that were released.Capt. loves to fish, boat isgreat, even at 17 foot, trolling motor is amazing.Great/fun day fishingdespite the poor bite. Malcolm and Chuck with Nice Red Drum

October 12: Six of us, Dave and Diane Sundberg, Malcolm Thaden, Nick Brownlee, Robert Janrlich and Dale Nixon headed out of Carolina Beach on the Vonda Kay head boat, in search of tasty bottom dwellers. The day, and the waters, were absolutely beautiful! Everyone headed home with enough for a good

dinner! Three nice gag grouper were among the day’scatch! As always, “JK’s” (the cook) fresh fish taco’s were the best in town...and absolutely the freshest!

Dale with nice gag grouper

October 13: Denis Boyleand Bill Richards spent ahalf day on the ICW/inshore waters with CaptainHuff. As Denis and Billremarked....”What a greattrip, and a pretty day. Notethe Royal Flush of 4species, should be on Circle9 website. Jon Huff is great,my first time on the river aswell. We had a great timeand caught an “InshoreSlam” of trout, redfish, flounder and striper. The bigred was 32” or so, big fish.

October 22: Grover Canadyand his brother in law Ken,fished the waters around Figure 8Island with Captain Jon Hoff.Four small flounder werereleased. They were rewardedwith limits of nice speckled seatrout and a lovely day on theinshore waters.(photo of Groverand Ken Figure 8 Sea Trout).

Chuck Herron, George Scott,Dave Prentice, Dale Nixon andTom Atkins spent a weektogether enjoying each other’scompany on the “Fishing Tripof a Lifetime”, out of San Diego,California in early August. Seven nights on the seas in search of tuna, yellowtail, wahoo and grouper! It was a great fishing experience, a great week of camaraderie, fabulous dining and more. The guys shared a slide presentation and discussion with the fishing group the same afternoon as our General Meeting. Planning for next year’s trip is already advancing with several members having already expressed interest!

Upcoming Trips: A survey of interests for fall fishing trips was completed with inputs from all fishing group members in late August. The surveyresulted in 21 chartered trips being set up with 6 local guides, encompassing the range of inshore, near shore, offshore, river, and gulf stream fishing opportunities. The trips discussed above were developed as a result of the survey...and there’s another dozen trips still set to go! Vonda Kay head boat (bottom fishing –25 miles offshore), is back in business, now located in the marina in Carolina Beach. Regular rack rate for all day trip has been raised to $120 this year; however, special discounted price is still $80 for CFMC members (mention that you are a CFMC member). Throughout the autumn and winter, about once every month to five weeks, I’ll send out a invitation to everyone in the fishing group, advisingof planned Saturday trips. These are great opportunities to get tomeet other club fishermen, catch a lot of tasty bottom dwellers, and have a fun day on the water for a very affordable price.

September – Masonboro Island Paddle Eleven Kayakers met at the Trails End Park where it was quickly identified that the winds were up 16 - 20 mph which is a bit excessive for kayaking. But, yet a beautiful day at 80 degrees, all agreed to give it a go. As we paddled the first leg of the journey to Masonboro Island Beach, waves were breaking over the bow of the kayaks. Needless to say, it was very challenging to make any headway. Three of the eleven paddlers needed to turn back after a break on the nearest island, while the other eight took a break on a near-by island before pushing on to Masonboro Island. At Masonboro Island we went to the ocean side to see the rough water from Hurricane Humberto justwest of Bermuda at a current CAT3. Based on the wave action, it seemed to be a lot closer. The water was way too rough for anyone to attempt swimming but the beach that was left, was covered with shells.

4

Page 5: Cape Fear Men's Club,

When we put in for the return trip from the island, the winds andcurrent were at our aft which made it a quick and easy trip back. We needed it.

After the paddle, lunch was at the Keg & Egg, a wonderful placefor a Pittsburg style sandwich and beer.

October – Brunswick Nature Park On Friday October 18, thirteen paddlers launched from the excellent launch facility in Brunswick Nature Park. We paddled downstream towards the Cape Fear River. The brisk morning

was made into aperfect day by the flatwater, no wind andwarm sun. We weretold that we'd seemany animalsincluding deer, otters, gators and birds butwe must be stealthy.Well, that is difficultfor thirteen men inplastic Kayaks. But,we did see osprey, vultures, a bird thatlooked likea Cormorant with verylonglegs. Frank Amoroso spotted a bumpy treelimb that turned out tobe a large alligator. We were told by DanWeb of Gator HoleStore that it was a 14'Gator that sits on arazed mud flat on theleft of the river. We only saw the 6' tail and no leg going into the creek. No one put their hand in the water for the remainder of the paddle.

The last paddle of the season is set for November 15 when we will explore the Northeast Cape Fear River between Sawpit Landing (off White Stocking Road) and the Shaw Highway Wildlife ramp.

See you on the water, Doug & Jim

Cape Fear Uncorked / Wine Group II News - 29 October 2019

Uncorked held an “outside” wine pairing dinner at the Porter’s Neck Country Club, arranged by Steve Rothschild and John Wynne and presented by representatives from Tryon Distributing. Thetheme wasOktoberfest featuringwines from Austriaand Germany. Wewere joined by twoother couples fromthe CFMC. We weregreeted with a lightPinot Noir from theItalian Alps that ledto the first course ofshaved Brusselssprout salad withgoat cheese, pairedwith what would become the hit of the evening: a white Austrian Gruner Veltliner by Forstreiter Grooner. A first main course was aginger snap-coated pork schnitzel with braised red cabbage, paired with a slightly sweet red Dornfelder from the Rheinhessenwinery P.J. Valckenberg, a match roundly embraced by the entire group. The second main course was a lemon pepper sea bass on herb potato cake with baby arugula salad, paired with

an Alsatian white Edelzwicker from Meyer Fonne. We concludedthe tasting with a caramel-coated apple strudel paired with a Riesling from Schloss Saarstein, Germany.

The impeccable pairings were made by PNCC chef, Chris Lubben, whose dishes were perfectly matched to the sometimes-difficult wines of Germany and Austria, whose climates tend to favor sweeter wines. At the conclusion, over twocases of the Forstreiter Grooner Veltliner were ordered by club members. This wine possesses bright lemon notes in a spicy yetsubtle base, a clear winner of the night.

Breakfast & Lunch Bunches Steve Adrian - [email protected]

& Alan Smith - [email protected] Breakfast & Lunch Bunches In September the Breakfast Bunch was interupted by Dorian butin October we met at David’s Deli for their very satisfying breakfast fare. In September Hops Supply on Oleander served up their always welcome array of tempting lunch items and our Treasurer got to enjoy some real down south hooch. October’s Lunch Bunch found us at Felix Café for their slightly different menu choices. In November we will be having Breakfast Bunch on the 7th at Famous Toastery, 6722 Wrightsville Ave. They offer some some different upscale choices that members should find interesting. Lunch Bunch will be on the 21st at Blue Asia, 341 S. College Rd.This has always turned out to be a very enjoyable spot with good food at good prices with huge portions. December is looking like a month where everyone will be getting over Thanksgiving and preparing for the winter holidays so we will next meet in January. Remember, Breakfast Bunch meets the 1st Thursday of the month at 9:30 and Lunch Bunch meets the 3rd Thursday of the month at 11:30 so plan on joining us for a great meal and lots of stimulating conversations.

Neither group will meet in December.

Early Riser Breakfast The Early Risers Breakfast group continue to meet in small, non-franchise eateries as a small, conversation group at 0730 on third or fourth Tuesdays. For the past two months members enjoyed two new restaurants -- the Gulfstream II in Wrightsville Beach and the Eternal Sunshine Cafe in Leland. For the next two months it'll be at the Savor Southern Kitchen on Carolina Beach Road and the K&W Cafeteria on Oleander.
