December 2020 News and Minutes
President Clarke Buchanan welcomed 25 members and guests to our meeting on Zoom.
Many thanks to Dave Arnone and Mike Grady for working on the technology for this
meeting and to our trouble shooting tech team of Marc Sitkin, Denis Casaubon, and
Sandy Arnone!
Upcoming programs and events
• January will be antique pepper mills by Richard Wright and Mike Grady. Richard
will be using the Spectraply material with Easy Wood tools for an artistic shape while
Mike will be using a gouge on a more technical turning
• Rudy Lopez will be our featured demonstrator for February. He will be turning a
natural edge end grain vase from a green log using a bowl gouge and the Rolly Munro
Hollower. He will explain limb selection, pith orientation and drying to help avoid
cracking. He will cover the differences of cutting end-grain verses side-grain and
using different end-grain hollowing methods. He will use the Rolly Munro Hollowing
tool and discuss it verses the bowl gouge, scrapers or a hook tool along with the use
and sharpening of the negative rake scraper. Rudy will demonstrate how light can be
used to gauge thickness, reverse jamb chucking to undercut and hollow the foot, and
sanding wet wood on and off of the lathe.

NOTE: All these meetings will be viewed live but on your home computer, iPad, or
phone--not at the Cultural Center! You will get an email with a link inviting you to the
meeting just like you did for previous meetings.
Thank you to our 2020 demonstrators
From the Nominating Committee
Dave Arnone, committee chair, reported this information in a recent email.
Please note that the Election of Club Officers will be held as a part of the January 6,
2021 Club meeting. Following a thorough process of soliciting, recruiting, and vetting
potential candidates from the Club membership; the Nominating Committee has worked
with the Club Board to establish a recommended slate of nominees to stand for election
as Club Officers. The resulting slate of candidates involves a number of the current
officers continuing to serve, but wearing new hats. This may be a little confusing, I know,
but here we go….Robin McIntyre’s term as Club Secretary and Steve Patzman’s term as
Club Treasurer, will both conclude at the close of this year. Robin has expressed interest
in the position of Program Coordinator, which would create an opening for a new
Secretary. Steve has agreed to continue as Treasurer and is included in this year’s slate of
candidates. In addition, Clarke Buchanan has tendered his resignation as Club President
after successfully leading the Club for many years, as a result Clarke will now fill the
post of Immediate Past President, to assist with the transition to a new Club President.
Denis Casaubon, our current Vice President, has expressed an interest in serving as the
Club President, which would create an opening for a new Vice President for the
remainder of Denis’s term; and Don Chase has volunteered to fill that opening. This
would result in Don’s seat on the Board of Directors being open; and the Nominating
Committee is recommending Paul Mathias to fill that opening. So here is the resulting
recommended slate of candidates:
The Nominating Committee’s recommended slate of nominations for the Club’s
Officers is as follows:
Denis Casaubon – President – two-year term
Don Chase – Vice President – one-year term
Steve Patzman – Treasurer – two-year term
Deb Chapin – Secretary – two-year term
Robin McIntyre – Program Coordinator –two-year term
Paul Mathias – Director – two-year term
The Committee remains open to additional nominations from the floor; and if there
are any at this time, please forward them to Dave Arnone, Nominating Committee
Chairperson.
The committee continues to seek members interested in filling both officer and
committee positions. If you would like to take an active role and contribute to the
Club, please contact Deb, Mark, Don, Steve, or me.
December Exhibit and Sale at the Cultural Center
The December Show and Sale at the Cultural Center has two galleries to set up on 12/8
and taken down 12/21. There are 186 pieces in the show—a record! The Center has
been having significant foot traffic with safety restrictions so this is a good opportunity
for both sales and exhibition. There will also be a under $50 gift table which is always
popular for shoppers. The reception is December 12 from 2-5 pm at the Center. Please
come by and support the club and the Cultural Center. Gallery hours are Tues to Sat noon
to 5 pm—call 508-394-7100 to be sure the galleries are available for viewing as classes
may be taking place in the main hall.
Wanted--Books and DVDs related to turning
What’s lurking on your bookshelves or perhaps on shelves in your shop? Anything that
actually belongs to the club that you borrowed some time ago? Anything that you’d like
to donate from your stash? Any duplicates that you have?
Ken Whiting will be collecting materials and getting them to the Dennis Public Library to
add to our collection. Contact Ken at [email protected] or 508-430-4629.

This is the drawing that started the empire of Mary Engelbreit in her early days.
Great for bowl turning enthusiasts.
First CCW Coffee Hour
Seventeen turners enjoyed each other’s company on Zoom on November 18. We
discussed stabilizing larger turnings, dust collection systems, compressors, and had a
Show and Tell either with Powerpoint photos/video or live. Our December coffee hour
will be Dec 16th at 9:00 am. Everyone is welcome to attend! If you want to send your
photos for the Powerpoint, phone photos are fine for resolution. Send them to Robin at
[email protected] by Dec 15th. Thanks to Clarke for hosting and to Robin for
putting the Show and Tell together. We are working on planning the topic of Selling and
Marketing your Work for an evening session in the near future.
Shop Tip from Clarke
Repurpose your dull bandsaw blades to hold turnings off the table/workbench when
drying finishes. Carefully break into 6” sections and bend them into angles. (I use a vice
to hold the blade to break it and bend it to shape)
Use 2 for small footed turnings and 3 or 4 for larger bowls and platters.
Caution: wear gloves and eye protection when snapping and shaping bandsaw blades.
Holiday Ornament Challenge
Thank you to everyone who submitted ornaments to the challenge on behalf of the club.
We had 20 ornaments submitted by 6 turners—Ed Putnam, Dave Arnone, Richard
Wright, Mike Grady, Denis Casaubon, and Robin McIntyre.
Check out the display at www.AsWoodTurns.com/challenges. You will get some ideas
for this year and next!
Community turning class at the Cultural Center
On January 14 from 1-3 pm, the Cultural Center is offering the first of a 6-week class on
turning to focus on whatever skills you are interested in. Dave Arnone is the instructor.
The class is being held both in-person in the lower level shop at the Center and virtually.
For more information, see their website at cultural-center.org.
2021 dues are due
As we look forward to changing the calendar from 2020 to 2021, CCW dues, the best
deal on the Cape at $25, are due. Send your check to Steve Patzman at 69 Doane Road,
Harwichport, MA 02646 or see Dave Arnone’s email of 12/2 for a online payment
option. Programs, demonstrations, information, mentoring, raffles/auctions, group
buying discounts, show/sale events, camaraderie—and you are supporting the club!

These events are additional highlights for the club over 8 years that this information has

CCW Women in Turning
On November 14, 5 turners met in Jan Casiello’s garage for a second session of carving.
We also shared “Round Robin” projects—you start something that would fit on a midi
lathe and pass it off to someone else to continue the project.

Remember that the WIT Presents events from AAW—meant to be inspirational rather
than educational--are now open to all turners who are AAW members usually on the
second Saturday of the month at 4 pm EST. To date, Beth Ireland, Betty Scarpino,
Kimberly Winkle, Donna Zils Banfield, Merryll Saylen, and Kristin LeVier have wowed
us with their life work of turnings and given us a shop tour! The recordings are available
on the AAW website at https://woodturner.org/Woodturner/ WIT/WIT-Home-

This is a 6" hollow finial ornament. The body is Myrtle, and the finials are Macassar
Ebony with a crystal bead.
This 1 1/2"solid aluminum teardrop ornament was turned on my wood lathe using
standard woodturning tools, sanded to 1000 grit then polished with automotive polishing
compound.

I used a variety of woods including some pear that Steve gave me as well as some
unknown wood from chair legs from derelict chairs that I had around. I've had a lot of fun
trying different variations with a good number of the attempts being failures but enough
successes to keep me going.
